Eileen Ivers: "Wild Blue" (Green Linnet). What better way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day next Sunday than with this album, which ties the past and future of Irish music together so artfully? Ivers grew up in an Irish American section of the Bronx, learning her jigs and reels well enough to win the Senior All Ireland Fiddle Championship. But she has also toured the world with Hall & Oates, and has jammed with everyone from West African percussionists to American rappers, and is now starring in the stage hit "Riverdance." Her new album, "Wild Blue," named for the color of her violin and the sound it makes, encompasses all these experiences in an instrumental album that connects the discipline of traditional forms with the freedom of improvisation. T-Bone Wolk, Ivers's co-producer and former Hall & Oates bandmate, adds organ and electric bass to most tracks, while Kimati Dinizulu and Ben Wittman add percussion. Unlike most modernizers, though, Ivers maintains not just the old instruments but the old musical forms as well. Whether she plays an old reel straightforwardly on "Ships Are Sailing" or uses it as the basis of a six-minute improv on "Destitution," it still sounds like a reel. Joanie Madden: "Song of the Irish Whistle" (Hearts of Space). Ivers is one of the guest musicians on this new solo album from the tin whistle virtuoso of the all-female Irish American folk band Cherish the Ladies. Like Ivers, Madden is a Senior All Ireland champion on her instrument and has modernized traditional tunes by adding synthesizers (courtesy of producer and new age star Brian Keane) and electric bass. On this instrumental album, Madden doesn't pursue Ivers's improvisational flights, but rather creates an atmospheric lushness of sound. But the sturdiness of the traditional tunes and the piercing purity of Madden's tone keep the recording from lapsing into mood music. John Whelan: "Celtic Reflections: Misty-Eyed Morning" (Narada Lotus). Whelan was also a guest on Madden's album, and he has recorded his own instrumental solo album for a noted new age label. The London native won seven button-accordion championships in Ireland and moved to the United States in 1980 at age 20. He's not only a quick-fingered player but quite a melodic composer as well, and he wrote a dozen of the 14 tracks on "Celtic Reflections." The most successful numbers are the most traditional; on those, Whelan and such old pals as Patrick Kilbride, Seamus Egan and Jerry O'Sullivan put the bright themes through one bouncy variation after another. Less satisfying are the synth-soaked mood pieces. Noirin Ni Riain: "Celtic Soul" (Living Music). Noirin Ni Riain (Noreen O'Ryan in Anglicized versions) is a legendary sean nos (traditional a cappella) singer in Ireland, but on this project her keening, clear-as-a-bell soprano is backed by American pastoral-jazz ensemble the Paul Winter Consort and such guests as Madden and O'Sullivan. Nine sean nos songs are sung in Gaelic, two Indian hymns are sung in Hindi, and a delightful arrangement of William Butler Yeats's "Down by the Sally Gardens" is sung in English. Winter's arrangements emphasize elongated phrasing and sustained notes, and the near-droning effect creates a spiritual stillness not unlike that produced by the chanting monks who were all the rage two years ago. ff782bc1db
