The Terminology of Algebra
An algebraic expression is a combination of letters and numbers combined with mathematical operations.
Pronumerals are variables where letters used to represent numbers. In the above image the pronumerals are x and y.
Let's consider the below algebraic expression.
3a+b+13c+2
Highlight the coefficient of each pronumeral in the expression
Now highlight the pronumeral
3. Highlight the constant term
4. How many terms in total can you see?
5. What is the coefficient of b?
Writing algebraic expressions from a word description
We can make algebraic expressions from word descriptions in fact, you already do this.
For example, Aurora is given $5 in pocket money for every time she takes her dog for a walk, we could write an equation for how much money she might earn.
Where P = total amount of pocket money and
t = the amount of walks she takes we could write this as.
P = 5 x t
Let's practice on the following.
