Expanding brackets

When expanding brackets, every term inside the brackets must be multiplied by the term outside the brackets.  

The number outside the brackets tells us how many times the expression is to be repeated.  

For example, 2(a + k) is 

two groups of a + k 

or 

a + k + a + k

When simplified this is 2a + 2k
