YCAN launched in October of 2021 with the goal of reaching as many young people as possible.
Here's how we've been doing that so far.
Our kick off event was a series of community based artivism action inclusing a poetry open mic, an intergenerational art walk, a climate storyteling webinar, and a protest sign building workshop. These actions helped us explore how art can be used as a tool to reach a broader audience, make a message more impactful, and foster deeper community connections.
The Little Leaders Summer Climate Convention is for young leaders aged 10 to 12 who are interested in getting involved in direct climate action. The main mission of this initiative is to provide a platform to inspire and empower each other to lead the next steps in the fight against the climate crisis. We have always been and always will be agents of change and a source of inspiration as we lead the way in a new wave of intersectional activism.
The program is completely youth-led and centered around a series of interactive workshops on topics including environmental justice, creative climate action, climate change solutions both big and small, as well as climate science and leadership training.
The first annual Youth Climate Action Festival was a resounding success! The event brought together an intergenerational audience to celebrate the power and importance of youth voices within the climate conversation. The goal of this festival was to provide a platform for youth to cultivate meaningful connections through an intersectional lens and lay a foundation for future collaborations.
We also worked to showcase the wide range of priorities that young people are addressing on both a local and statewide level including the implementation of an Interdisciplinary Climate Justice Education Bill as well the passing of a natural gas moratorium in Massachusetts. Participants had the chance to engage in both educational and action based workshops centered around environmental justice and climate hope. There were collaborative art projects, a live performance from a local youth dance company, a community open mic, two live music performances, a poetry reading, as well as ample time to mingle and chat with one another about our goals as youth leaders. Representatives Mindy Domb and Dan Carey were in attendance to share more information about their efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change in our communities as well as show their support for youth led climate action!
Every year, the Western MA Youth Climate Leadership Program (YCLP) organizes an annual day of action at the Springfield Musuems to bring together youth leaders from across our region. The Summits are educational and empowering gatherings where students from changemaker teams have the opportunity to connect in community, learn from one another, get inspired by our peers, and to partner with climate activism experts from across the state to take action towards transformative change and social justice. The event works to equip our participants with hands on skills and the exepriential knowlege to ensure they can head back out into their communites and schools to continue taking action and making change together!
