1. Alafia River

In 1951, the Dora Canal was used to reshoot some of the river scenes for the movie African Queen, starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn.

To help with flood control, Lake Tarpon was blocked off from the Gulf of Mexico in the 60's by the construction of a dam.

This part of Florida is known as the 'Central Florida Ridge' and has the highest elevations in Central Florida, reaching 312' above sea level.

Did you know: Caladesi Island (State Park) split from Honeymoon Island to the north after the "Tarpon Springs" hurricane of 1921 and joined Clearwater Beach after Hurricane Elena in 1985.

Ruskin was developed and named by Dr. George Miller who was a professor at Ruskin College in Missouri.

Peter Demens, responsible for bringing the Orange Belt Railway in 1888, named the city after his childhood home of St. Petersburg, Russia.

Eckerd College is home to the only college marine rescue team in the country.

Marker 43 is the last green ICW marker you will find going north for 132 NM, until you reach Carrebelle, FL in the panhandle.

16. Tampa- Rick's on the River

Captured by the Uzita tribe, a young sailor named Juan Ortiz, was ordered to be roasted on an open fire. At the last moment, Ortiz was pitied by the chief's daughter, Ulele, who begged her father for mercy.

17. Tampa- Harbour Island

The modern history of Tampa history can be traced to the founding of Fort Brooke at the mouth of the Hillsborough River in 1824.

18. Clearwater- Cove Cay

St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport is a public/military airport. Construction of the airport at its present site started in March 1941 and became home to the 304th Fighter Squadron, a combat training unit of P-40 Warhawks and, later, P-51 Mustangs at Pinellas Army Airfield (as it was then known) for the duration of World War II. Antisubmarine patrols against German U-boats in the Gulf of Mexico were also flown from the airfield.

19. Tierra Verde

Fort DeSoto was built on Mullet Key during the Spanish-American Was in 1898. Shell Key is slowly joining Mullet Key as sand bars connect the two.

The Treasure Island Causeway bridge was first opened to traffec in 1939.
