Step 1: Access Trove
Go to https://trove.nla.gov.au
Click on "Newspapers & Gazettes" from the main menu
Step 2: Search for Yarrawonga Newspapers
In the search box, type "Yarrawonga"
Use the filters on the left sidebar to narrow your search:
Select specific date ranges if needed
Choose specific newspapers if you know which ones you want
Filter by content type (Article, Advertising, Family Notices, etc.)
Step 3: Browse Results
Review the search results list
Click on any article title to open it in the Trove viewer
Use the preview thumbnails to quickly assess relevance
When searching, you'll encounter these types of newspaper content:
Article: News stories, feature articles, serials, advice columns, cartoons
Advertising: Classified ads and advertisement spreads
Family Notices: Birth, death, and marriage announcements
Detailed Lists: Casualty lists, sport results, racing results, television guides
Open the article in the Trove viewer
Click "Download" in the left sidebar
Select "Article" from the dropdown menu
Choose your format:
For Text Format:
Select "Text"
The article will open in a new browser tab as plain text
Save using your browser's save function (Ctrl+S or Cmd+S)
For Image or PDF Format:
Select either "Image (JPG)" or "PDF"
A window will appear with size options (default is Medium)
Click "View..." to preview the medium-sized version
To change size: Close the preview tab, click "Change size", select your preferred size, then click "Create..."
Click "View..." to open the final version in a new tab
Save using your browser's save function
Important Note: Long articles in Image and PDF format will be split across multiple A4-sized pages with overlapping content to ensure nothing is lost. If you need the entire article on one page, experiment with different size settings.
Open the newspaper page in the Trove viewer
Click "Download" in the left sidebar
Select "Page" from the dropdown menu
Select "PDF" (this is the only format available for pages)
The page will open as a PDF in a new browser tab
Save using your browser's save function
Open any article from the issue you want in the Trove viewer
Click "Download" in the left sidebar
Select "Issue" from the dropdown menu
Select "PDF" (this is the only format available for issues)
Click "View PDF" to open the complete issue in a new tab
Save using your browser's save function
Search Strategies:
Try different spellings or variations of names and places
Use quotation marks for exact phrases: "Yarrawonga Football Club"
Combine terms: Yarrawonga AND wedding
Use date ranges to focus on specific time periods
Navigation Tips:
Use the calendar view to browse by specific dates
Check multiple local newspapers for the same time period
Look at both news articles and classified sections for different types of information
Organisation:
Create folders on your computer for different topics or time periods
Name your downloaded files clearly (e.g., "Yarrawonga_Chronicle_1950_flooding_article")
Keep notes about which newspapers and dates you've already searched
If download buttons don't work:
Refresh the page and try again
Check that pop-up blockers aren't preventing new tabs from opening
Try a different browser
If text is unclear:
Try downloading in a larger image size
Use the zoom function in the Trove viewer before downloading
Consider downloading as PDF instead of image
If you can't find specific content:
Try broader search terms first, then narrow down
Check variant spellings of names and places
Look in different sections (news, classifieds, family notices)
