If you want a straightforward wired monitor headphone for focused remote-work listening, choose Yamaha RH5MA; if you need a closed-back design with a detachable coiled cable and useful included spares, choose Shure SRH840. For remote work, I’d lean toward the Shure when desk isolation and replaceable parts matter, while the Yamaha is the simpler pick for a lighter, lower-commitment wired setup. These are headphones, not microphones or wireless headsets.
Yamaha RH5MA vs Shure SRH840 at a Glance
• Yamaha RH5MA strength: 40 mm drivers, semi-closed design and a wired connection with both a 3.5 mm mini-jack and 1/4-inch adapter. Trade-off: its cable is fixed, and the supplied details do not list replacement ear pads or a carrying bag.
• Shure SRH840 strength: closed-back, around-ear design, detachable coiled cable, replacement ear pads and a carrying bag. Trade-off: it is a substantial wired studio headphone rather than a compact, wireless work headset.
• Sound profile: Yamaha lists a 20 Hz–20,000 Hz frequency range and highlights low-to-mid-low accuracy; Shure lists 5 Hz–25 kHz and describes a tailored response aimed at rich bass, clear mids and extended highs.
• Connection: both are wired and include a 3.5 mm jack; each also comes with a 1/4-inch adapter.
• Who should choose Yamaha: someone who wants a direct, uncomplicated headphone for monitoring or listening from a compatible audio source.
• Who should choose Shure: someone who prioritizes a closed-back around-ear design and wants the cable and ear pads to be replaceable.
The RH5MA is a wired, semi-closed monitor headphone with 40 mm dynamic drivers. Yamaha describes it as suited to studio monitoring and points to accuracy in the low and mid-low frequencies. Its stated frequency range is 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. For a buyer who wants a conventional wired setup for listening, monitoring or connecting to a compatible device, that straightforward design is the main draw.

It comes with an eight-foot oxygen-free copper cable, a 3.5 mm mini-jack and a 1/4-inch adapter. That gives it useful connection options for portable audio sources as well as equipment with a larger headphone jack. The ear pads are described as urethane leather, and the product information lists the headphone’s weight as 164 g. Those are concrete points to consider if a lighter, simple wired option appeals more than a headphone with a set of extra accessories.
I’d consider the Yamaha if you want a monitor-style headphone without a detachable cable or a pile of included extras. I’d skip it if a closed-back design, a detachable cable or replacement ear pads are priorities: those are features specifically listed for the Shure, not the Yamaha. Neither model is a Bluetooth headset, and neither product description identifies a built-in microphone. If your main goal is calls, check that your remote-work setup already has a separate microphone.
The SRH840 is a wired, closed-back, circumaural headphone designed for studio recording and critical listening. Shure describes its sound as tuned to provide rich bass, clear mid-range and extended highs. It uses 40 mm dynamic drivers, and the listed frequency range is 5 Hz to 25 kHz. Those figures describe the stated range and driver size; they don’t, by themselves, guarantee that every listener will prefer its sound.
Its practical advantage is the set of details around the headphone, not just the audio description. The cable is detachable and coiled, and the package includes replacement ear pads, a carrying bag and a threaded 1/4-inch adapter. If you want a closed-back, around-ear form and value the option of replacing parts, the SRH840 makes a more complete studio-oriented package on paper.
For a desk-based listener who wants a wired headphone for focused listening, the Shure’s design and replaceable components may be appealing. But it is not a wireless headset, and the supplied details don’t list a microphone. It also isn’t the pick for someone who specifically wants the Yamaha’s listed 164 g weight or a semi-closed design. If you need earbuds for remote work, these full-size monitor headphones are a different kind of product altogether.
Side-by-Side: Which Should You Choose?
• Best fit for a closed-back design → Shure SRH840. Its design is explicitly listed as closed-back and circumaural.
• Best for a detachable cable → Shure SRH840. Its coiled cable can be detached; the Yamaha’s cable is described as a supplied eight-foot cord.
• Best for included replacement ear pads → Shure SRH840. A replacement set is included in its listed package.
• Best for a lighter listed weight → Yamaha RH5MA. Its product information gives a weight of 164 g; the Shure listing gives 1.8 pounds.
• Best for a listed frequency range extending higher and lower → Shure SRH840. Its stated range is 5 Hz–25 kHz, versus 20 Hz–20,000 Hz for the Yamaha.
• Best for a simple wired connection with both common jack sizes covered → either. Both have a 3.5 mm jack and include a 1/4-inch adapter.
• Best Bluetooth headset for remote work → neither. Both are wired headphones, and the supplied details do not list Bluetooth or a built-in microphone.
The distinction that matters most is how you plan to use them. For remote work involving long listening sessions, device compatibility and fit matter alongside the stated audio features. If you work near other people or want a closed-back model, the Shure’s construction is the clearer match from the listed specifications. If your priority is a semi-closed monitor headphone and a lighter listed weight, the Yamaha is easier to justify.
Cable choices can also shape a work setup. The Yamaha’s eight-foot cord gives you a defined reach, while the Shure’s coiled cable is detachable. A detachable cable offers a replaceable part if the cable becomes an issue, but the coiled format may not suit everyone’s preferred desk arrangement. Neither set of details establishes wireless convenience, call controls or a microphone, so don’t treat either as an all-in-one answer for video meetings.
A shopper searching for rechargeable clip on earbuds for remote work is looking for something quite different: a rechargeable, clip-on earbud format. Neither of these wired monitoring headphones matches those stated features. Likewise, people searching broadly for earbuds for remote work should note that the Yamaha and Shure are headphone models, not earbuds. The better question here is whether you want a wired monitor headphone, and which construction and cable arrangement fits your workspace.
My Verdict
In my opinion, I’d choose the Shure SRH840 for remote work if I wanted a closed-back, around-ear headphone and valued its detachable cable and included replacement pads. Those are practical differences that make the Shure the more adaptable studio-style option on paper. I’d choose the Yamaha RH5MA instead for its semi-closed design and lighter listed weight. Neither is a wireless call headset, so I’d pair either with a separate microphone if meetings are part of the routine.
For focused listening at a desk, the Shure’s closed-back design and detachable cable may be the better fit. The Yamaha is a reasonable alternative if you prefer a semi-closed headphone and its listed 164 g weight.
No Bluetooth connection is listed for either model. Both are described as wired headphones with a 3.5 mm jack, and both include a 1/4-inch adapter.
The Shure SRH840 has a detachable coiled cable and includes replacement ear pads. The Yamaha RH5MA is described with an eight-foot cable, and the provided details do not list replacement pads.
You can use them for listening in a remote-work setup, but you’ll need a separate microphone if you need to speak on calls.
