If you want a lightweight, wired studio monitor with a clean aluminum build and extended low-end clarity for calls in quiet environments, choose Yamaha HPH-MT120BL; if you need maximum sound isolation, a broader frequency response, and professional media controls for critical listening or noisy settings, choose Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M50xWH.
• Yamaha HPH-MT120BL: Offers a surprisingly light 1.1-pound weight and a robust aluminum enclosure, but lacks active noise cancellation and relies on standard wired connectivity without remote buttons. Best for the user who prioritizes comfort during long sessions and needs a pure, uncolored sound signature.
• Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M50xWH: Delivers exceptional sound isolation with a wider frequency range (5 Hz to 35,000 Hz) and integrated media control, though it is significantly heavier at 2.2 pounds. Ideal for the audio professional or call-center worker who needs to block out distractions and requires precise frequency tracking.
The Yamaha HPH-MT120BL is designed for the listener who values physical comfort above all else. When I look at the specifications, the most striking figure is the item weight of just 1.1 pounds. In a world where heavy over-ear headphones can become a burden after an hour of wear, this model feels remarkably light. The design utilizes an aluminum enclosure that promises durability without the crushing weight of other metal-heavy alternatives. This isn't just about aesthetics; it is about how the headset sits on your head and ears for hours. If you are wearing these for back-to-back meetings or long gaming sessions, the reduced pressure on your head is a tangible benefit that spec sheets often fail to convey until you actually feel it.
For those seeking the best open ear headphones for calls, this might seem counterintuitive given its closed-back design, but the engineering here focuses on clarity rather than isolation. The 40mm dynamic drivers are tuned to deliver a frequency response from 20 Hz to 22,000 Hz. This range covers the full spectrum of human speech and music, ensuring that voices come through crisp and clear without muddying the lower frequencies. The "Professional Grade" style name suggests a focus on utility, and the lack of complex electronics means there is less to go wrong. You get a straightforward, high-fidelity experience where the only variable is the quality of your source material.

However, this product is not for everyone. If you work in a loud environment or need to block out background chatter completely, the closed-back design helps, but it does not offer the active noise cancellation found in some modern wireless contenders. Furthermore, the connectivity is strictly wired via a 3.5 mm jack. There are no Bluetooth capabilities, no battery life to manage, and no built-in microphone mentioned in the core audio features. This makes it a dedicated listening tool rather than a communication hub. If you are looking for the best bluetooth headset for calls, this is not the device. It is for the person who wants to hear exactly what was recorded, nothing more, nothing less, wrapped in a shell that feels premium yet featherlight.
The Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M50xWH targets a different kind of user: the professional who demands absolute sonic accuracy and environmental control. While the Yamaha is light, this unit weighs in at 2.2 pounds. That extra mass is intentional, providing the structural integrity needed for a headphone that claims to be a top-tier studio monitor. The design emphasizes sound isolation, a feature explicitly listed in the controls section. This is crucial for anyone trying to focus on a mix or a conversation in a busy office or a noisy home. The isolation works passively, clamping down to create a seal that blocks external noise, allowing you to hear the nuances of a recording or a voice message without distraction.
Audio performance is where this model truly distinguishes itself. The frequency range stretches from 5 Hz to 35,000 Hz, a significantly wider span than the Yamaha's 20 Hz to 22,000 Hz. This extension into the ultra-low and ultra-high frequencies allows for a level of detail that is essential for critical listening. Whether you are analyzing the rumble of a bass drum or the subtle air around a cymbal, this headphone captures it all. The inclusion of media control and remote functionality adds a layer of convenience that the Yamaha lacks. You can manage playback or calls directly from the ear cup, which is a practical necessity for someone juggling multiple tasks while monitoring audio.
This product is ideal for the user who needs the best open ear earbuds for calls alternative but prefers the stability and isolation of a large over-ear form factor. The "Renewed" status implies a second chance at life for a professional-grade tool, offering the same high-quality construction as the original but often at a different market position. The warranty is listed as a 90-day limited warranty, which provides peace of mind regarding the condition of the renewed unit. However, the weight is a trade-off. At 2.2 pounds, these are substantial. They will feel secure and stable, but they may cause fatigue faster than the lighter Yamaha option during marathon sessions. If your priority is blocking out the world and hearing every detail in the audio spectrum, the extra heft is a small price to pay for superior isolation and frequency reach.
• Best for comfort and long-term wear → Yamaha HPH-MT120BL, thanks to its 1.1-pound weight which reduces strain on the neck and head.
• Best for sound isolation → Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M50xWH, due to its explicit "Sound Isolation" control and robust clamp force implied by the professional design.
• Best frequency range → Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M50xWH, covering 5 Hz to 35,000 Hz compared to the Yamaha's 20 Hz to 22,000 Hz.
• Best for media management → Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M50xWH, featuring built-in media control and remote functions.
• Best for simple, direct audio → Yamaha HPH-MT120BL, offering a pure wired connection without complex buttons or remote interference.
• Best for durability → Both use aluminum enclosures, but the Yamaha's lighter frame may feel less intrusive over time, while the Audio-Technica offers a more industrial, heavy-duty feel.
• Best for quiet room calls → Yamaha HPH-MT120BL, providing clear audio without the bulk of heavy isolation gear.
• Best for noisy environment calls → Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M50xWH, where the passive isolation is critical for hearing clearly.
After weighing the specs, the design philosophies, and the specific needs of a buyer torn between these two, I would buy the Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M50xWH for professional use and the best open ear headphones for calls in challenging environments. The ability to isolate sound and the expanded frequency range provide a level of control that is indispensable for serious listening. The media controls add a layer of utility that makes daily operation smoother. However, if your primary concern is wearing headphones for eight hours straight without feeling the weight, the Yamaha HPH-MT120BL is the superior choice for pure comfort. For me, the balance of isolation, range, and control makes the Audio-Technica the winner, especially since it is available as a renewed unit that brings professional quality to a broader audience.
Both models support wired connections via a 3.5 mm jack, but neither explicitly lists a built-in microphone in the provided data sheets. Their suitability for calls depends entirely on whether your connected device includes a separate mic or if you are using a cable with an inline mic adapter. The Audio-Technica's superior isolation makes it better for blocking background noise during calls.
The Yamaha HPH-MT120BL weighs 1.1 pounds, making it nearly half the weight of the Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M50xWH, which comes in at 2.2 pounds. This significant difference affects comfort during extended listening sessions.
No. Neither specification mentions active noise cancellation technology or batteries required for such a feature.
Yes, the style name "Modern theme: Audio Production" and the extended frequency range of 5 Hz to 35,000 Hz confirm its status as a professional studio monitor. The Yamaha is also labeled "Professional Grade," but the Audio-Technica offers a wider spectral range for critical analysis.
