Previous Award Recipients
Helping Hand Award (Unit)
The Helping Hand is awarded to those that go above and beyond for the Unit they serve for the Yahara District.
Nominee must be a registered Scouter in Yahara District
Nominee may not receive this award more than once.
Nominee must have rendered noteworthy service above the call of duty in his or her unit.
If the nominee has participated in any district (or council) activities, please mention that also.
James Newlun Award (Unit)
James (Jim) D. Newlun was a longtime Scouter in the Yahara District. This award is to recognize those who give continuous, outstanding service to their unit. Jim was Yahara District Chair and served many different roles in his unit, the Yahara District, and in the council. His unsurpassed dedication and commitment to Scouting is why this award is named in his honor.
The James D. Newlun Award is awarded for continued support of Scouting at the Unit level after being tenured for at least 5 years in the Yahara District. A maximum of 3 awards will be given per year.
Active in the Yahara District for at least 5 years.
Recommendation for this award written by a Scout from the nominee’s unit describing the nominee’s service to the unit.
Wind Beneath My Wings (Unit/District)
The Wind Beneath My Wings Award is to recognize a partner that has unselfishly helped, allowed, encouraged, backed, accompanied, and/or supported their registered partner to do the most for Scouting even in the midst of having to handle chores and responsibilities the registered Scouter would have accomplished, had they not volunteered to serve Scouting. The nominee may be a very active “behind the scenes” person not seeking any recognition, just backing the Scouting partner in all that they may do for the Scouting program. The nominators need to state the reasons the spouse should be recognized with this award.
The nomination can be made by anyone but their partner.
The nominee does not need to be a registered Scouter in the Yahara District.
The nominee’s partner must have been active in the Yahara District for at least 3 years.
Requires a nomination by a Scouter(s) describing the candidate and the support the nominee has provided to their partner.
Community Award (Unit/District)
The Community Good Turn Award is presented to an organization or group who has rendered noteworthy service to youth in Scouting, outside of Scouting, or both.
Nominee does not need to be a registered Scouter in Yahara District
Nominee must have rendered noteworthy service above the call of duty to the Yahara District or a Yahara District Unit.
If the nominee is a Chartered Organization, how have they gone above and beyond.
Thunderbird Award (District)
The Thunderbird is presented to those that go above and beyond for the Yahara District.
A maximum of 3 awards will be given per year.
Nominee must be a registered Scouter in Yahara District or District Unit.
Nominee must have rendered noteworthy service as a volunteer at Yahara District activities or on Yahara District / Council Committees.
Merle Gjertson (District)
Merle Gjertson was a Scoutmaster of Troop 167 in Stoughton who passed away while attending the 1993 National Scout Jamboree. His unsurpassed dedication and commitment to Scouting is why this award is named in his honor.
The Merle Gjertson to awarded to Scouters that continue to contribute to Scouting at the District level.
A maximum of 3 awards will be given per year.
Active in the Yahara District for at least 5 years.
Previous recipient of the Thunderbird Award in the Yahara District.
Requires a nomination by a Scout(s) or Scouter(s) describing the candidate and their accomplishments and contributions to the Yahara District.

District Award of Merit (District)
The District Award of Merit is given to individuals who render service of an outstanding nature at the district level.
A nominee must be a registered Scouter in the Yahara District.
A nominee must have rendered noteworthy service to youth in Scouting, outside Scouting, or both. Note: The nature and value of “noteworthy service to youth” may consist of a single plan or decisions that contributed vitally to the lives of large numbers of youth or it may have been given to a small group over an extended period of time.
Consideration must be given to the nominee’s Scouting position and the corresponding opportunity to render outstanding service beyond the expectations of that Scouting position.
The nominee’s attitude toward and cooperation with the district and/or council is to be taken into consideration.
The award is made available annually on the basis of 1 for each 25 traditional units or fraction thereof.
Nominations cannot be considered for posthumous awards.
