The idea to join up with the military had never quite been ideal for Donald F. Duck, he had so much at home that he had to take care of. The idea had finally been implanted in his head when he was speaking with his drinking buddies, Mickey and Goofy. They typically did not speak about politics or matters as serious as the war when out drinking, but the war was an unavoidable topic, especially as most men had been drafted or called to fight for their country. Donald had noticed that Goofy had been quite somber the entire night, even more so than he typically was, drinking to forget his wife’s death a few years back. Donald remembered asking Goofy what the matter was, “Hey Goof, you doin alright tonight? You have been acting weird all night.”
There had been a pause as Goofy took another swig of drink, “I received a letter from the military yesterday, apparently they want me to join the war effort. I’m supposed to report about two weeks from now.” Goofy's hands shook a bit, “I don’t know what I’m going to do, I can’t die yet!”
Mickey made an odd noise before exclaiming, “Well you ain’t gonna go over there and kick some Nazi ass without me, I’ve been thinking about joining up for quite some time, I only needed a good reason.”
“You would really do that for me?” Goofy asked excitedly.
“We have been friends since Middle School Goofy, there is nothing that can separate us!” Mickey drunkenly exclaimed.
The pair of men laughed together before turning to look at Donald, silently asking the question they wanted to ask. Donald gave a laugh, “Well I guess I can’t be left out of this either! I’ll go to hell and back with you gentlemen! Let’s enlist tomorrow at noon!
The night continued with the trio of friends drinking the night away with laughter and games. The next morning all three men reported to the recruiters office and enlisted in the army, they were told that they had three weeks to get all their affairs in order, and so Donald Duck quickly arranged a date with his girlfriend, Daisy.
He had reserved a table at the place where they had their first date at two years ago. It was a rather fancy Italian place that had a nice quiet atmosphere to go along with the great food. Donald had been rather nervous about meeting with his girlfriend and telling her about the fact that he had joined up with the war effort, he knew that she would not take his admittedly brash decision lightly.
Donald had arrived ten minutes early and had been worrying the entire time, unsure of how is girlfriend would take this news. He sat at a small secluded booth watching both the clock and the door to the restaurant waiting for her to arrive. Daisy arrived about five minutes after the planned time, but to Donald it had felt like hours. She sat down at the table with a rather large smile on her face, “I remember our first date here so vividly. You were as much a nervous wreck then as you look right now.” She joked.
Donald chuckled,” I wasn’t a nervous wreck then and I am not one now, I was just a bit nervous that the date would go bad.”
She shrugged, but then adopted a slightly more serious pose, “So why are we eating here of all places? This is the kind of place I figure you might want to take me to for our anniversary, or something like that.”
Donald shook his head, “Daisy I have something to tell you, but promise you won’t be mad?”
Daisy shook her head, “I can’t promise that I won’t be mad, mainly because you asking me that is already making me mad.”
Donald nodded slowly, “Daisy I signed up to join the military.”
She stared at Donald in shock, “How did you think up that idiotic idea! Did you not think that that might be a rather serious decision to make? When did you sign up for the military anyway?”
Donald winced at her angry words, “I signed up two days ago, I know it sounds a bit rash but I have a good reason!”
“And what reason would that be? Did one out your friends convince you to join? I bet it was Mickey! I always thought he was a-“
He interrupted her,”It wasn’t just because my friends were joining, I can’t just sit to the side and watch as so many people I know go to fight! I want to stop the Nazi menace in Europe before the horrors they commit are spread to America, I know it was brash but can you forgive me?”
“My god Donald, you really dug yourself into a hole this time.” She whispered. She nodded towards Donald, “I forgive you you yellow billed moron, but don’t do any dumb stuff again. You better not get shot by any snipers over there anyway.”
“I’m joining up with the Navy, I think I need to worry more about torpedoes and U-Boats than I do enemy snipers.”
“You better send letters every day about everything you are doing, I don’t want to miss out on any stories you might have to tell.” She spoke,
“Of course I will Daisy, and will you send letters back?” He asked.
“I just might, but you better really wow me with your storytelling.” She demanded.
There was a silence between the two before they began to laugh loudly, “You have really got yourself in another fine mess Donald Duck."
The man’s hands shook slightly, rattling the inside of the brown leather suitcase. His dull green eyes fidgeted around towards anyone that came close towards the odd man. Wrinkles covered his face, and his hair had begun receding towards the end of the last cycle. The brown leather suitcase was kept as close to the man as possible, his fingers making slight indents in the leather. He reached his hands into the pockets of his blazer, his fingers fumbling around for his keys. The man stopped in front of the small metallic apartment building, and turned the door handle into his apartment. A loud buzzing came from outside his apartment building, and he took a small look outside to see a man in a grey cloak with an odd featureless mask slowly walking towards his door. Bright purple lights came from the grey cloaked man's eyes, and he stopped in front of the older man.
“Hello sir!” It exclaimed excitedly, “I have arrived here from your local emotion monitoring station, we have noticed you have been rather stressed as of late, and that is no good!”
There was an odd silence between the two, neither speaking to each other. The older man spoke with a quiver in his voice, “I assure you, I am perfectly fine, I’m sure the monitor must have been incorrect. I spilled a bit of water on it today, see?” He lifted up the bulky watch on his hand, and the emotion bots bright purple eyes dulled a bit.
The bot spoke with the same enthusiasm as earlier. “Now Now Mr. Johnson, we both know that lying is against the creators rules! Now can you tell me what has had you down as of late?”
“I assure you that there must be a glitch, I have been having the time of my life at my job! I have been having no troubles at all,” The older man spoke loudly.
The robot spoke more urgently this time, “Mr. Johnson, please stop resisting and come with me, all it will require is a bit of reeducation and you will be back on your feet! I understand men your age can get a bit angry at times, but we can help it at the emotion center!
Mr. Johnson stared at the robot in the grey cloak, and then began to pull something out of his blazer. The metal cylinder that the older man had procured from his pocket made an odd noise and then a large metal ball shot out of it and slammed the robot into the ground. Electricity erupted from the metal ball, the robot fell to the ground and began to make erratic movements.
The older man gripped his suitcase tightly and began to run across the sidewalk, his legs moving faster than he had ran in years. A loud noise began coming from the sirens and a loud voice began to speak all around him, “Paul Johnson, age forty two has become emotionally erratic, please avoid him at all costs as he is considered armed and dangerous”. The voice line began repeating over and over, the deep voice almost seemed to become louder and louder the more he said it. A hologram came from his watch, and an odd 3D model of himself appeared on top of the screen.
His hand shot out and grabbed the corner of a wall, before propelling himself into an odd alleyway. The alleyway was extremely dark, and it had a rancid smell emitting from the dumpster, he would have left if not for this being his destination. For the first time in hours he loosened his grip on the suitcase and began to move forward. He knocked on an out of place door in the middle of the alleyway, and voice began to speak from the other side of the door.
“Who are you?” the voice spoke.
“Paul Johnson, I need to speak with Elizabeth! It’s an emergency!” The main exclaimed loudly.
The door opened and a giant of a man stood on the other side of the door, his eyes dug into Johnson's soul, watching his every movement. The giant motioned for Johnson to follow him, and they walked through the narrow hallway into a large room with many people idling. Johnson looked back and forth, staring at the many people that were in the room, they were working on many things, from writing to reloading guns. The giant slammed his hand onto Johnson's shoulder, and whispered something inaudible. A large steel door stood strong in front of them, bolts like long swords stuck the door to the wall which seemed inferior in comparison.
The giant man knocked five times in an odd pattern, and then after a long silence the door creaked open loudly. Johnson stepped inside, and then the giant of a man slammed the door from behind him. All that was in the room was a single large wooden desk, and a woman sat on the opposite side of him. She gave Johnson an odd look, “Alright Paul, sit down, we must have a conversation about you being caught by the Emotion Control robots. You did-”
A loud screaming siren erupted from the desk inside of the room, the woman stared straight at Johnson. “You idiot!” She screamed. The woman grabbed Paul's arm and slammed some sort of USB drive on the watch. The woman stared at Paul, “I must evacuate this room, you brought all of us onto us! If you had been more careful they wouldn’t have caught up with us! This could set back the rebellion decades depending on what we aren’t able to destroy!”
The woman slams her hand down on something below her desk, and an odd door opens from nowhere behind her. She begins to step through the door before turning to stare at Johnson, “You are the reason this happened, and If they get in here and interrogate you…”
She pulls out a long cylinder, “Forgive me, I cannot let our secrets get out”
There is a loud bang, and then there is nothing.
The neon signs glow shone upon him as the slumped man took slow steps to the doors of the diner. His tired hands gripped the door handle and pulled, and the once quiet jazz now could be heard in its full capacity. The building had large windows facing outside, and was quite reminiscent of a 50’s diner, but it looked as if time had quite warped the once beautiful establishment. The mans tired eyes rested upon the dull red of the walls, and took practiced steps towards a booth and slammed himself down in the seat. He tilted his head and looked out at the dark busy street, vehicles passing by almost every other second. A cough came from his left, and he swiveled his head towards the sound. An older woman in a red uniform stared at him, “Well Robert, it don’t look like you had a very good day. Yah look like you went through hell n’ back.”
“I have just had a long day, workin’ the ol’ graveyard shift ain’t easy.” He let out a small chuckle, “I suppose your job hasn’t been too busy has it?”
The woman gave him a tired smile, “You know it never is, only people we get now are people with nostalgia, or people new to town.” She handed him a menu, “You gonna try anything new this time, or just the usual?”
He shook his head slowly, “I think what I usually get is just fine, I s’pose I don’t like to change all that much. Just the hotcakes and a cup of coffee is all I need to get along like usual.”
The woman scoffed, “Wouldn’t hurt ya to try somthin new would it?” She walked back behind the counter, and stepped into the back room of the building. A swear was heard from the back as the woman walked back out of the room, “We’re outta bacon, so you are just gonna have to deal with it!”
Robert nodded, “That will be just fine Lucille, could you replace that with some hash browns?”
“Of course I can, I guess you will be trying something new after all!” She exclaimed from the back room.
Bright lights shone from the window, and a shiny red Bel Air pulled up into the parking lot of the diner. Robert stared at the car, and felt something strange from the deepest part of his soul, he found that he could not help but stare at the vehicle. A well dressed man slowly exited the car. The man wore a rather fancy suit, and a crimson red tie. The man appeared to be older, perhaps around sixty, and carried himself like nothing could touch him. Robert watched as the man quickly walked up to the door and slammed it open.
The older man's head turned sharply towards Robert, and gave him an almost devilish grin. He began to walk slowly to Roberts booth, and then gently let himself down on the seat in front of him. He began to speak, “Hello my dear friend, I have come here to ask if you are interested in my proposition.”
Robert stared at the man, “My apologies, have I met you somewhere? I assure you that I do not mean to be rude or anything like that, I do not remember you.”
The man spoke in an almost taunting tone, “Oh I am not surprised you don’t know me, but I sure do know you Robert. I have been watching you for a while, I think that I can help you and you can help me. Are you interested?”
Robert frowned, “What do you mean?” His mind raced through all the ways he could know this odd man, but he came up with nothing.
“I believe your daughter is rather ill is she not?” The stylish man spoke.
A vibration came from the table as Robert stood up, “Excuse me? I have no more time to play any kind of games, who the hell are you? I’m not going to sit here and play this guessing game, so you better give a good explanation!”
The man grinned, “Oh of course you would not like playing games, but I sure do! What is the point of life if you can’t have a bit of fun every now and then, eh?”
A loud clinking of plates came from the back of the diner, and out stepped the older woman, carrying two plates and a cup of steaming liquid. The woman walked very carefully, and stopped in front of their table before putting the food on the stable. She clucked her tongue, “Robert, why didn’t you tell me we had another customer. May I ask what you would like to eat, I hope Robert hasn’t been too rude to you, he gets cranky when he is tired.”
“I’m not cranky! I’m just annoyed!” Robert shot back.
“Aw, is poor wittle Wobert all angwy wangwy? Well what would you like to eat new person?”
Robert opened his mouth to shoot back, but he was interrupted by the man across from him, “I would just like a cup of coffee, I’m not very hungry as of right now.”
The older woman set back off to the back of the restaurant leaving the two men to their own devices. The sharply dressed man gave Robert a soft smile, and Robert glared at the man, “Well are you ready to tell me who you are?”
“I have plenty of names, but I feel as if that doesn’t matter too much right now. I am merely here to speak to you about something that I could do for you. I know you care very much for your poor daughter, and since the cure for her disease doesn’t come for around eighty more years, I think you might be interested in hearing me out.” The grinning man spoke.
There was a long silence, the only noise coming from the quiet jazz playing from the jukebox. Robert scrunched up his face, before letting out a sigh, “Alright, I will entertain this for a while, what would I need to do to get her cured? I’m not exactly a rich man myself.”
The man in the suit did not speak for a few moments, but then his grin seemed to get even bigger, “I have no need for money, as a matter of fact all I need is your soul. It most likely sounds incredulous to you, but I can prove I have the power to do this.”
A shrug was given from Robert, “Alright, prove it.”
The sharply dressed man merely stared at him before snapping, and then everything around Robert lost color. The jukebox once playing slow quiet jazz no longer played, and the rumble of cars in the night was no longer heard. There was no noise, and a fly near Roberts head merely floated in mid air. The sharply dressed man gave Robert a smile, “Have I proved my abilities enough or will I need to show you more. I do not have all day, so if we strike a deal it will be easier and quicker to fix your daughter, you don’t want her to suffer anymore do you?”
Robert nodded numbly, and mumbled, “How do I make the deal with you? What do I need to do?”
The sharply dressed man extended his hand, “In exchange for your soul, your daughter will get better immediately.”
Robert took his hand, and then cold black flames erupted from the man’s hand. The man with the suit began to laugh almost maniacally, and chills went through the veins of Roberts body. There was then nothing, and nothing existed for Robert. His eyes opened wide, and what awaited him was a completely white place, there were no walls, there was nothing. He lifted himself off the transparent ground, and watched as a panel of glass opened in thin air, and he saw the diner.
“What the hell?” He whispered.
Inside the panel of glass he could see the diner booth, before hands seemed to move into the screen, and then he realized what he was seeing. The screen was showing from his bodies perspective, but not in the white purgatory he was in. Robert slowly watched as the panel turned towards an older woman walking towards the table. A voice came softly, “Ah hello Lucille, I am afraid my good friend has left, I can pay for his and my meal of course.”
A shrug came from the older woman, “Alright, I suppose that is fine. Make sure to say hello to yeh little girl for me!”
The panel turned towards a wallet, and hands grabbed money from within and put it on the table, “I am sure this will suffice. Have a great nice Lucille!”
A scream came from Robert, “You bastard! I can’t believe you tricked me into doing this!”
As he watched his body push open the door to the diner, a rather cocky voice came from his body, “I would have you know that I did my side of the deal, once I get to your home your daughter will be just fine! Quit whining and crying, you are a grown man for gods sakes!”
His body opened his car door, and entered it. The car began to drive by itself, without his body even touching the wheel, “I am afraid that I never learned how to drive a mortal vehicle, what is the point when you can make it move with your mind? I suppose your puny mind would not understand what that would be like.”
Robert began to slam on the glass window, but no matter his efforts the glass would simply not break, and he slumped to the ground, seemingly defeated by the glass. Robert watched the car pulled into the driveway, and he did not move. Robert did not speak, he only watched quietly. His body walked into the house, and a small girl stood there with a smile so bright it could rival the sun. The little girl spoke with a eager yet weakened voice, “I am so glad you are home! Do you want to play? I am feeling so much better!”
His body spoke, “Of course darling, but you must go to sleep, it is far too late to be up!”
A feeling of hopelessness filled Robert as he watched his body speak to his daughter. He opened his mouth and began to scream.
