Xvi32 Hex Editor Download Chip

On the first photo there is my FLASH ROM programmer, a slightly modified SMC 1211TX-WL50 PCI Ethernet NIC. The switch switches between the lower and upper half of the ROM as the SMC-branded Realtek RTL8139C chip can flash ROMS only up to 128KB. I use the ctflasher along with a few simple scripts that cut the ROM image in two and burn them in two steps.

I found a better Hex-Editor (here on a video in thread about the NABU (Cable) PC) called xvi32.

It shows much more characters on the right ASCII part, so better for finding text and also due to the matrix lines. And you can easily change the character set. That also changes the HEX values and so can be saved.

The best tool I've found is not really a tool meant to view HEX files, but Segger's J-Link Flash programming software. It's really meant to program chips, but it reads HEX files beautifully. Find it at J-Link / J-Trace Downloads.

When we say the hacked ROMs for Genesis had the graphics "decompressed", that's not exactly the right terminology. The graphics that are used, at least in the EA series that I've looked at, have shared tiles. They are not "compressed" as you can still see all the graphics when you open Tile Molester, but it won't look exactly like the "what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG)" in the game. That's due to the use of shared tiles. Back in the 90's, chip size was important/expensive, so the smaller you can make the game work the better. Graphic data by far takes up the most space on the ROM, so if you can re-use certain tiles for an image, that would help reduce the size without impacting the game.
