This research project studies urban sounds and their role in the human society, leveraging data-driven methods, mobile software development, and user-centered design.
The project aims to provide a novel mobile tool for understanding and playing with daily urban sounds. The research concerns the complexities of how people perceive and interpret urban soundscapes, and seek to disentangle the qualitative complexities through audio feature extraction and interactive data visualization.
A cloud-based mobile app was designed for participatory collection, exploration, re-creation of urban soundscapes. The app engages ordinary users as a tool for documenting and reflecting on the auditory environments of their daily urban life.
