The MTN XtraCool Plan allowed users to make free calls to other MTN lines between 12:30 AM to 4:30 AM every day. The only requirement was that users should have at least 100 Naira airtime. This airtime would not even be deducted, except of course users exceeded the stipulated time.
People had different reasons to be on the phone for 5 hours. For some it was to talk to their families, others spoke to their crush, and some others spoke to their school father/mother or their school daughter/son. Couple of people spoke to friends outside the school, the list was endless...
MTN XtraCool had an irresistible offer: Do you know how powerful an offer has to be for thousands of people to willingly give up their sleep every day? MTN's offer was free talk on the phone for 5 hours at no cost. YOUNG Nigerians loved it, and they dived right in. XtraCool built a Community everybody wanted to be part of: It was a big cool community. All you needed to join the community was an MTN sim registered on the MTN XtraCool tariff plan. The benefits of the community was one people didn't want to miss out on. People wanted to position themselves to be able to receive calls from the Cool community, so they joined the community.
Now, MTN was not the only community with this plan at the time, but others didn't have the reach. MTN had way more users. For example, if you use a different network and 60% of your friends on the MTN network schedule a conference call, you would definitely be left out. And people (especially teenagers) don't like feeling left out in things like that.
Customer Acquisition: I, for example, bought my sim because of the XtraCool benefit. I wanted to be able to make and receive free midnight calls. Several other people bought for the same reason too. Product Engagement: To make night calls, you needed to have a minimum balance of 100 Naira. Every day, people (read students in my school), who had less than 100 Naira scrambled to find different means to recharge their lines before the appointed time. Customer Retention: I outgrew the night call fever, even when the offer was still on. Even after I outgrew the fever, I still kept the sim active. It was the phone number many people knew, and I wanted to keep in touch with them. Between then and now, I have retrieved and upgraded my sim card to suit new phones and technological advancement.
Some people's experience with the XtraCool product would definitely be different from mine. For example, undergraduates, corpers, working class people would definitely have a different experience from mine shared above.
Before I conclude, I must point out one thing. Not everybody jumped on the XtraCool fever. Older people didn't see the need to stay awake to talk. It made no sense to them. What however made sense to them was the XtraConnect plan that allowed them talk to Family and Friends during the day at a cheaper rate.
