Kia introduces new Owner’s Manual mobile app

The "Kia Owner's Manual app," an AI-based owner's manual created in collaboration with Megazone and Google Cloud, has been released, according to a statement from Kia Motors Corporation.

The Kia Owner's Manual app, according to the Korean automaker, is a user-friendly mobile app that uses the smartphone camera to describe the names and purposes of features found within Kia cars. 

Drivers can utilise the app to more conveniently find information about specific features rather than needing to consult the printed owner's handbook. 

The benefit of being able to readily and simply explain functionalities is another benefit of the user-friendly software.

Since 2017, Kia has provided clients with augmented reality (AR) mobile apps in a few markets. However, due to the requirement to measure all layouts and switches for each new model, the app's widespread use was constrained. 

As symbols in vehicles are universal, Kia, Google, and Megazone concentrated on recognising symbols on the switches to make the app compatible with any new models. 

The new Kia Owner's Manual app may now be more easily customised and modified for dozens of Kia's international markets thanks to partnerships with Google Cloud and Megazone.

AI-enhanced symbol recognition

The Symbol Scanner feature of the app accurately identifies in-car switch symbols from any angle by utilising Google Cloud's special AI platform-based image learning technology.

For instance, the AI platform will identify the image through server communication if a user uses a smartphone to scan the "cruise control" symbol on the steering wheel. 

The smartphone then immediately starts playing a video that describes in great detail how the cruise control technology works.

The Kia Owner's Manual app also functions as a searchable digital owner's manual. Additionally, it offers an illustrated list of in-car symbols and warning lights for instrument clusters, as well as an index of symbols and warning indicators.

Launch in the second-half of 2023

In the second half of 2020, Kia Motors will gradually roll out the Kia Owner's Manual app, beginning with the launch of brand-new vehicles across the globe.

The vice president and head of worldwide dealer and service at Kia Motors, Eui-sung Kim, stated that the Kia Owner's Manual app would provide a distinctive customer experience with our goods. 

With the help of the app, which offers simple and intuitive information on the many functions of their car and our newest technology, Kia drivers will be able to improve their level of safety and convenience while driving.

"We are excited to work with Kia on this cutting-edge application of the AI platform, which is already employed in the manufacturing sector to assist in automating the visual quality control process. 

According to Kiyoung Choi, country director of Google Cloud Korea, "The new AI-powered Digital Owner's Manual is a terrific illustration of the kind of difficulties AI can solve and how it can assist improve the customer experience."

In appreciation of its ingenuity, the Kia Owner's Manual app just took home the top honour in the Intelligent Application category at the Korea Intelligent Information System Society's 2020 Spring Conference. 

Through its collaboration experience with Google Cloud, Kia Motors intends to create additional convenience offerings that incorporate cutting-edge smart technology.

In the upcoming months, Kia will introduce its eagerly anticipated Sonet compact SUV in India. 

The new compact SUV, which was originally unveiled to the public in concept form at the Auto Expo earlier this year, is expected to become Kia's third model for the Indian market.
