The first Philosophy of Biology and Cognitive Sciences Workshop was founded by Víctor Verdejo and Cristian Saborido when they realised that there were no graduate conferences in these two fields in Spain, and that, although there were people doing their research about philosophy of biology or cognitive science, they were disconnected from each other.
The first edition of the PBCS Workshop was held in 2011 in Murcia (UM). It was organised by Elsa Muro and Emma Martín, two predoctoral researchers at that time, and the only two speakers were Víctor and Cristian. From that very moment, and given the positive feedback they got, they decided to repeat the event the following year, always with their sight set on helping young researchers for them to have a meeting point to exchange ideas, get to know each other, and find collaborators.
From this point, the PBCS started to grow gradually. The second edition was held in Madrid at UNED. It consolidated its two-day format and started the tradition of inviting young researchers as keynote speakers. The first open call for abstracts happened on the fourth edition in Granada, being a total success. The edition individuality and independence began with its sixth edition in Barcelona (UB), granting the workshop organisation its own voice and personality. What has remained is its spirit: a meeting point for young researchers that provides them a place to share ideas and foster their exchange.
During all these years, the PBCS workshop has left important marks. It was one of the first graduate conferences of this kind in Spain. It has also grown from a Spanish event to an international one. It has helped build a community and network of philosophers of science. Participants have ended up being keynote speakers or part of the scientific committee. Several Springer books or special issues in journals have been edited. Collaborations and projects have been born of connections that sprung at PBCS.
