The Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Demo is here ahead of the release of the full remake, and we thought it would be fun to let DF tech specialists Alex Battaglia and John Linneman loose inside the game to see what they made of it. Consider this a mini DF tech review then, a first look to tee up our full coverage - expected sometime around the release of the full game on March 24th.

PC users can benefit from better performance and image quality than on console, with hair and texture quality being noticeably improved. RT is a bit better, with more objects shown in reflections, while SSAO has fewer errors but perhaps looks a tad oversharpened with TAA working differently that it does on consoles. The game runs smoothly, but there do appear to be small loading stutters - most noticeable when running above 60fps. Overall, PC looks like the best platform to play the Resident Evil 4 remake at present, but we'll have to wait for the full game to know for sure.

Despite Resident Evil receiving a remaster a few years ago, the end result wasn't the same one as witnessed in Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. Although Resident Evil's remake polished up the graphics and improved the visuals, the game did not receive a major overhaul in terms of gameplay. Now, a team of dedicated modders is seeking to rework the game from the ground up and change it to make it look like a full-on remake.

@Mgalens it's probably just because nemesis was my first resident evil game & one of the few games I had for the PS1 I was always terrified when nemesis showed up & it gave you the option to run or fight always chose run lol

The game is available for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Surprisingly, despite releasing a VR version of the game just last year, Capcom also announced it's developing "PSVR2 content" for this remake. That seems to imply the full game won't be playable in VR, but we'll have to wait and see.

The RE4 remake will have many gameplay changes included as well as remastered graphics and sounds. The game is set to release on March 24, 2023, and will feature side quests to offer new content to add a little surprise for players who are already familiar with the classic RE4 game. Many have claimed that Resident Evil 4 is the best in the series and therefore this remake is an exciting venture that has many excited gamers eagerly watching its progress through trailers and pre-ordering the game. Hopefully, the impressive Collector's Edition will be back in stock soon for everyone who is wanting it.

Visually, Resident Evil 4's PC version holds several advantages over its console counterparts. The game's rain, rendered as fat, ugly, white drops in a trailer released earlier this month, caused a kerfuffle among fans who were convinced that ugly raindrops meant the RE4 remake was doomed to failure. I think I get what Capcom was going for: You're in a torrential downpour, at night, so darkness coupled with heavy rain should enhance the atmosphere: it's a dark and stormy night, things are moving out there in the darkness, and all that. There was another water-related issue that TJ Denzer and I both noticed. During a certain boss fight that takes place on water, the rippling effect on the surface caused by the boss's movement just below the surface looked like one big, ugly texture on PS5.
