A bi-monthly column of scholarly research on the history of landscape culture, selected and edited by me. 12 issues, 2009-11.
The column of "Flora of Landscape Thought 山水百傢言" is published in the journal of Landscape Architecture / 风景园林 (Shenzhen, the official journal of Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture). In many non-Western cultures, such as China and India, traditional ways of living is being erased during rapid modernization in a break-neck speed. In this age of globalism, it is important to think about the specificity of each culture's view of landscape and relationship to nature that are indispensable parts of the tradition. To understand the differences and diversity of human being's sense of environment is essential in our shared efforts in shaping a sustainable future. The column has received generous supports from some of the most insightful sinologists and historians in the world. It is our shared hope that designers and students in and out of China will benefit from the new perspectives opened up by these advanced researches, and start to re-evaluate the unique heritage of landscape culture and tradition.
The main purpose of this column is to present to Chinese academia, students and readers outstanding Western scholarship in the historical studies of landscape culture, focusing on China and East Asia (also theoretical studies from other parts of Asia, Europe and the Americas). Each issue will present one selected article by an established scholar, which will be fully translated into Chinese and published (or reprinted) in bilingual format. All translations are by Chinese translators, and reviewed and corrected by the authors. As the column's host, I write a detailed introduction--《导读》--about the author and his/her ideas at the beginning of each issue.
Bilingual, texts in Chinese and English.
