DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC.

Mission & Purpose

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded by twenty-two undergraduate women on January 13, 1913 at Howard University in Washington, DC to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to those in need. The Founders first public action was to march in the Women's Suffrage Parade in March 1913 to advocate for women's right to vote.

The sorority remains an organization of college-educated women committed to the constructive development of its members and to public service with a primary focus on the Black community through the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust (i.e. Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement).

Since 1978 Xi Gamma Chapter has been dedicated to realizing the mission of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority by implementing high-quality programs that benefit the Hofstra University campus community and its surrounding area.
