Welcome to my personal website! I am a CNRS researcher at LPENS. I am interested in understanding collective behavior in living systems. Through develop novel methods of statistical inference, I find interactions in real biological systems that give rise to emergent collective behaviors. The main scope of my research include both collective animal behavior and neuroscience. Recently, I have also branched out to explore ecology systems.

2026.3: A 2-year postdoctoral position in theoretical biophysics is opening in the Physics of Cells and Cancer Lab (Institut Curie - Paule Dagenais, Pascal Silberzan) and LPENS (Xiaowen Chen, Vincent Hakim). Working between the two labs, the project will focus on theoretical understanding and numerical analysis of collective cell migration on patterned surfaces, especially directly inferring interaction rules from experimental data. To apply, please send your CV, a brief research statement, and two letters of reference to xiaowen.chen@phys.ens.fr. Application will be considered on a rolling basis, starting on April 15. See details here.
2026.1: We are excited to offer an M1/M2 internship opportunity together with Julie Grèzes (DEC, ENS) looking at "Collective dynamics of audience applause and emotional synchronization". Check the link for more information and reach out if you are interested! (position filled)
2025.6: I'm delighted to announce that I have been selected as a laureate of Tremplin@Physique from CNRS to start initiate collaboration on collective behavior!
2025.6: Our manuscript inferring resource competition in microbial communities from time series is accepted by PRX Life.
2025.4: Our manuscript on modeling collective behavior in groups of mice is now Version of Record on eLife.
2025.2: I'm delighted to join LPENS as a CNRS researcher (Chargé de Recherche de Classe Normale).
2024.10: I'm honored to be names as one of the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science 2024 France Young Talents.
