While exploring Inazuma, Lumine and Paimon discuss the appearance of Onikabuto which eventually leads to a conversation about Xiao. These lines are fully voiced so Lumine can be heard speaking Xiao’s name.
Paimon: Those Onikabuto bugs look so scary! The patterns on their backs are terrifying!
Lumine: Do you mean those demonic patterns? It's because they don't like to fight, so they purposely evolved their patterns in a way that scares their enemies away.
Paimon: That's really smart. We should try to learn a thing or two from them!
Paimon: We could borrow Xiao's mask. If a hilichurl saw you wearing it, do you think they'd run in fear?
Lumine: Uh... I don't think Xiao would agree to that…
(Profile Voice-Over)
While traveling together, Xiao and Lumine sometimes come across treasure chests. Although he finds some of the items contained in those chests peculiar, in the end Xiao is content as long as they are of use to Lumine.
Xiao: As long as it's useful to you. (Profile Voice-Over)
It is not known when and under which circumstances exactly the conversations during the Side by Side We Venture event take place. The first conversation has Xiao display yet another instance of how much he worries about Lumine, once again reminding her to call his name.
Xiao: Enemies you encounter during your journey will become stronger and stronger, so you must remain wary. Do you still remember what I said? If you are ever in danger, call my name.
(Side by Side We Venture)
In the second, it is implied that Lumine was looking for Xiao just to hang out together. At this time Xiao is unable to understand why Lumine would want such a thing so he finds her wish quite strange.
Xiao: I heard you were looking for me, what's the matter? "Just wanted to see me"... What a peculiar request.
(Side by Side We Venture)
During the Moonchase Festival Lumine, Keqing and Xiangling visit Yanxiao at Wangshu Inn in search of information about the God of the Stove. During their conversation, Yanxiao asks Lumine for the recipe of her Satisfying Salad. Paimon is confused, but Lumine immediately understands what the request is about: she once made that dish for Xiao and he didn’t reject it. Naturally, she is happy to help if there is a chance that Yanxiao will be able to cook more things for Xiao.
Smiley Yanxiao: I just wanted to ask if you had the time to make a Satisfying Salad for me?
Paimon: A Satisfying Salad? What for?
Lumine: Could it be...
Lumine: A certain person comes to mind...
Smiley Yanxiao: Guy who hangs out on the roof terrace, you know? Good looking fella, not too tall…
Lumine: Sure, I can help.
(Moonchase Festival)
Later, Lumine and Xiangling visit various friends to taste test Xiangling’s dishes and receive feedback. At one point they need the opinion of someone with mild tastes and Lumine thinks of Xiao, displaying how well she has come to know his food preferences.
Paimon: Now, who do we know whose tastes are on the mild side? Traveler, any suggestions?
Lumine: A certain person comes to mind again...
Lumine: Yep, I've thought of someone with mild tastes.
Paimon: Who, who, who?
Lumine: You know, Almond Tofu...
Paimon: Oh, right! Makes sense. So, back to Wangshu Inn?
(Moonchase Festival)
When it seems like they have to return to Wangshu Inn, which is quite far from the city, Lumine remembers the oath Xiao made to her. He told her multiple times that she can call his name, but she has never tried it before. This was a good opportunity to do so. Before she can act, however, Paimon jumps in and attempts to call him. No answer. The promise was only made to Lumine, after all.
Paimon: Oh! Paimon remembers! He said that we just need to speak his name, and poof, he'll show up.
Paimon: Paimon's going first! *clears throat*
Paimon: Xiaaaao!!!
Xiangling: Um, nothing's happening...
Paimon: Lemme try again. Xiaaaao!
Paimon: ...
Paimon: That's weird... Does he not wanna hang out with us?
Xiangling: Wait, so let me get this straight. Some guy with special powers promised you both that you just need to shout his name, and he'll show up?
Paimon: Um, well... not "both", actually. Just one of us...
Lumine: He promised it to me.
Xiangling: Oh, right. Well, you should be the one to try it then. Paimon clearly just doesn't want to feel left out.
Paimon: Wah... Okay then…
(Moonchase Festival)
When Lumine is the one to call him, Xiao appears immediately. Lumine did not quite expect that he would truly respond to her summons anytime, but now she knows for certain how loyal and earnest Xiao is.
Lumine: …
Lumine: Xiao, you there?
Xiao: You called?
Paimon: He actually came!
Xiao: You spoke my name, did you not?
Lumine: I didn't expect that you would really come...
Xiao: When I make you a promise, I will honor it.
(Moonchase Festival)
After brief talks and introductions, Lumine asks Xiao for help. Not only because Xiangling needs it but also because Lumine sincerely values Xiao’s thoughts. For his part, Xiao still avoids most human food, but he trusts that Lumine would not let him eat something foul. Most importantly, he is willing to subject himself to unfamiliar situations for her sake.
Lumine: Please help Xiangling out.
Lumine: We value your opinion, Xiao.
Xiao: …
Xiao: Since it's you... I will do it.
(Moonchase Festival)
Xiao does not linger. The big Harbor is uncomfortable and there are mortals around. Even so, deep down he must have been happy that Lumine summoned him for once. Plus he was able to spend some time with her, however briefly. Lumine thanks him for the help and Xiao, for what might be the first time, expresses his desire to see Lumine again in the future.
Xiao: I'll be leaving now.
Lumine: Thank you.
Xiao: See you next time.
(Moonchase Festival)
During the event Tuned to the World's Sounds, Lumine visits Wangshu Inn to see Xiao. She brings some Almond Tofu for him and hopes to relieve him from his sorrow, his loneliness and perhaps even momentarily relieve him from the burdens of his karma.
Just as evil must be conquered and filth must be cleansed, so too do silent sorrows, unfathomable solitude, and inexplicable resentment need redress. Scale the Wangshu Inn, which overlooks the peaceful lands of Liyue, with Almond Tofu as lovely as sweet dreams in your hand — and you too can help to resolve such problems...
(Tuned to the World's Sounds)
Atop the terrace, the two of them play a duet. Lumine uses the Floral Zither while Xiao plays the Windsong Lyre. Together they play a variation of Lovers' Oath, a song that has a lot of romantic symbolism.
One day Lumine decides to visit Tongque’s temple to pay respects and make an offering of Grilled Ticker Fish. When she arrives, she meets an unexpected visitor, standing still, gazing at Tongque’s stone statue. It seems that Xiao has been reminiscing over his former yaksha companion, although he is not very honest about it. He is not ready to fully open up yet.
Xiao: Why are you here?
Lumine: Are you here to see Tongque as well?
Xiao: I was just passing through.
(The Trail of Tongque)
Xiao maintains his usual demeanor and declares that the yakshas did not perform their duty for recognition, but deep down he must be happy to see Lumine willing to honor his fallen companions.
Xiao: What are you two here for?
Paimon: We're here to see Tongque!
Paimon: ...Aw, but this place is in as much of a mess as last time...
Paimon: There's a temple here, and a statue, too... Why doesn't anyone come to maintain this place?
Lumine: Perhaps this place has been forgotten.
Paimon: How could people forget something like this? The Yakshas are heroes who defended Liyue Harbor...
Xiao: ...
Paimon: Xiao, are... are you angry?
Xiao: No. The Yakshas did not perform their duty for any form of recognition.
(The Trail of Tongque)
Although it is Paimon who speaks on Lumine’s behalf, it can be assumed that Lumine would happily share her portion of Grilled Ticker Fish with Xiao. He declines, however. Perhaps due to feeling somewhat awkward after almost being caught vulnerable.
Paimon: ...Eh, let's not talk about this stuff right now. Grilled Tiger Fish first!
Paimon: Uh, and if you wanna have some, Xiao, we can give you half of our share each.
Xiao: It's fine…
(The Trail of Tongque)
Sadly Xiao doesn’t stay for long. The trio hears a plea for help, which turns out to be Wang Ping'an. After saving him from Hilichurls, he reveals that he wants to restore Tongque’s temple to which Lumine suggests they should move the discussion there. Xiao, not wanting to spend any unnecessary time around mortals, takes his leave.
One day Lumine helps Huai'an with a monster problem around Wangshu Inn. But when Lumine arrives at one of the monster encampments, she finds that all monsters have already been defeated. Then in the distance she spots another encampment with someone standing in the middle. It turns out that Xiao has already cleared the monster camps.
Lumine approaches him, alas today Xiao looks busy so he leaves after a brief exchange, but not before he reminds Lumine to be careful. Even if she’s a capable fighter, he always wants to make sure that she stays safe.
Xiao: ...Oh, it's you.
Lumine: What brings you here?
Lumine: Those monsters...
Xiao: I encountered these monsters by chance and defeated them.
Xiao: This area is not safe. So...
Lumine: I'll be careful.
Xiao: Right. I have other matters to attend to. See you.
(Uninvited Guests)
Lumine visits Xiao one day to bring him a little snowman. He misunderstands the gesture however and mistakes it for food. Xiao was forced to eat snow for survival in the past, so he doesn’t quite know snow is not considered food.
Xiao: This snowman... Can I eat him?
(Teyvat Anecdotes)
When Lumine hears news of the plans to rebuild the Jade Chamber and a competition is set in place for it with an enticing prize, she decides to participate. While she is on the search for the rare materials needed for the Jade Chamber, she notices Xiao standing by the cliffside. Through him Lumine learns that there is danger in the sea, which worries Xiao but he cannot get involved because Yanwang Dijun left Liyue to the mortals.
Xiao: What brings you here?
Xiao: Have they found a solution to the danger in the sea?
Lumine: What danger in the sea?
Xiao: Ningguang didn't tell you?
Xiao: Something has happened in Guyun Stone Forest. According to the contract, as an Adeptus, I should not get involved for now.
(The Crane Returns on the Wind)
Even so, Xiao is loyal to his duty and is ready to intervene when necessary, even if it means defending Liyue all by himself. Lumine is understandably concerned before Xiao even finishes explaining his stance. She knows he is prone to fighting alone and doesn’t like to ask for assistance.
Xiao: But these things can be unpredictable. I have a contingency plan of my own.
Lumine: Xiao, what do you...
Xiao: Only a single mountain lies between here and Liyue Harbor.
Xiao: If things get out of control, I will defend this place myself.
(The Crane Returns on the Wind)
In Shenhe’s Voice-Over, she reveals that recently Xiao seems more relaxed than before. She speculates that it’s because he met someone special. That person is Lumine, who brought a lot of positive changes in him.
Shenhe: My first impression of him was that he's not one to smile. After meeting him again more recently, however, he's still as reserved as ever, but... he seems a lot more relaxed now. Maybe he... met someone special.
(Profile Voice-Over)
Xiao was able to mentally tolerate Lumine's presence because she was a neutral party with no previous history. She was not a friend he might burden, she was not a weak mortal he might endanger and she was not even a being from Teyvat. Xiao became unintentionally attached to her, and by the time he realised it, it was too late. He can’t cut off the connection anymore because Lumine keeps reaching out to him.
Lumine is the light that illuminates Xiao’s dark world. Through her he is able to experience the things that he kept denying from himself. She brings him the things he wants but cannot admit to wanting. She is a friend who reaches out to him time and again, pulling him out of his solitude and helping him learn to see value in himself.
In Xiao’s Voice-Over about Shenhe, his thoughts quickly trail off to Lumine and he ends up talking about her instead, praising her sincerely.
Xiao: Shenhe seems to have considerable trust in you. ...It makes sense. After all, in this world it's hard to come across people like you who have such kindness and ardor. (Profile Voice-Over)
Lantern Rite is approaching and Paimon suggests inviting the Adepti to Lumine’s Serenitea Pot for a banquet. Naturally, Xiao is among the Adepti invited.
However, the Serenitea Pot is quite empty and not suitable enough to host and entertain the Adepti. Thus, Lumine and Paimon choose to search for valuable lost treasures at the bottom of the sea in order to decorate the Serenitea Pot with something special. While Lumine is trying to retrieve rare treasures from the bottom of the sea, Xiao sometimes appears to help her using his unique Adeptal abilities.
When the area for Xiao is unlocked in the web event, the following description appears:
If you cannot make it back for the time being, just look up at the moon.
It rises over the sea, where everyone around the world can see it and cherish it together.
These lines are a reference to the famous Tang Dynasty poem 望月怀远 (wàng yuè huái yuǎn) meaning “Gazing at the Moon, Longing from afar.” It is a poem by 张九龄 (Zhāng Jiǔlíng), in which the poet expresses the deep yearning felt when separated from loved ones.
Lumine has the opportunity to experience another Lantern Rite, though as usual she ends up running errands and helping others with various tasks. Thus, she joins Keqing in delivering gifts to the Adepti on behalf of the Qixing. When they visit Cloud Retainer, Lumine asks if the former has seen Xiao. Although Lumine knows well where Xiao usually dwells, perhaps she is interested in knowing more about him and how he has been spending his days.
Lumine: Speaking of which, have you seen Xiao?
Cloud Retainer: The Conqueror of Demons? One has not seen him of late.
Paimon: Well, then he's probably not in Jueyun Karst. Let's go look for him in his usual spot at Wangshu Inn.
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
Following that, Lumine and Keqing arrive at Wangshu Inn. Xiao notices that Lumine is looking for him so he immediately comes down to be of service.
Xiao: How can I help?
Paimon: Aaaah!!!
Paimon: Wh—Where did you come from? You scared Paimon!
Lumine: Were you here the whole time, Xiao?
Xiao: Yes.
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
Lumine and the others present the gifts to Xiao. He doesn’t think he deserves them so he tries to decline, but Lumine persists. Xiao deserves nice things.
Paimon: Uh anyway, we're here to give you some Lantern Rite presents! See, there's lots of tasty food!
Xiao: Don't waste your delicacies on me.
Lumine: The Qixing specifically prepared them for you.
Xiao: Hmph...
Xiao: Eradicating demons is my duty. You don't have to thank me.
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
Not knowing how to deal with receiving such grand gifts, Xiao attempts to leave by warning them of his harmful karma, telling them not to approach him so casually. Xiao’s concern is real and he truly wishes to protect them, but karma remains a convenient excuse he can fall back on when needed. Lumine is not deterred by it and instead invites him to watch the fireworks together. Xiao declines and leaves, but not before showing his concern towards Lumine, reminding her to exercise caution.
Xiao: Karma is harmful to humans. Even though your constitution surpasses that of ordinary mortals... It would be best if you didn't approach me so casually.
Paimon: Hey, wait! Are you leaving?
Paimon: C'mon, Lantern Rite is almost here! Don't you want to take a break?
Lumine: Why don't we go watch the fireworks in the city together?
Xiao: Like I said before, I have no liking for crowds.
Xiao: I must remain vigilant of evil attacks, especially during the holidays. I will continue my patrol as usual.
Xiao: You should also exercise caution. And if there's any danger...
Lumine: Yeah, I know.
Xiao: Good.
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
Lumine chooses to respect his wishes, not wanting to be overbearing with her invitation. Perhaps she feels that she was too insistent last Lantern Rite, constantly pestering Xiao about the lanterns. Although things worked out in the end that day, Lumine’s bond with Xiao has grown since then and now she understands him better. She wants to be more gentle with him.
Paimon: And he's gone...
Paimon: Well, Xiao hasn't changed a bit. Wonder if he'll come and watch the fireworks this year, though.
Lumine: Maybe.
Lumine: Only if he wants to.
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
Sometime later Lumine finds Xiao at Tongque’s temple. He opens up to her, sharing some of his personal thoughts.
Xiao: ...Lumine.
Xiao: You're here.
Xiao: I'm guessing this Lantern Rite is the same as every year.
Xiao: The demons have retreated and the humans are safe and well. If Tongque knew... it would be a lifelong wish come true for him.
Lumine: Xiao…
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
In the end Lumine cannot help herself and hopes to invite Xiao again. Lumine wishes for him to enjoy beautiful things. Xiao figures her out before she has the chance to speak; it seems he is also learning to understand her.
Xiao: I trust you're not here to invite me to watch the fireworks in the city?
Lumine: Guilty as charged.
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
Even though Xiao declines her invitation again, he is not entirely opposed to company. However he is still not completely honest; Xiao speaks of people wishing to see him but it is more likely that in his heart he really just means Lumine.
Xiao: I think I'll be fine right here.
Xiao: As long as the fireworks fly high enough, you can see them from wherever you are. Besides, if anyone wishes to see me, I know they'll come and find me.
Xiao: So whether I'm here or in the city... It makes no difference.
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
The following days Lumine meets Zhongli at various locations while he is taking a stroll all around Liyue. First she meets him at Wanwen Bookhouse where they begin discussing literary works and the yakshas’ book is brought up.
Lumine: I've also read one called "Yakshas: The Guardian Adepti."
Zhongli: Ah, yes. A memorable work indeed.
Zhongli: I have heard that this is an unpopular book due to its often impenetrable prose. And yet, the yakshas described in it are real historical figures.
Zhongli: They were loyal servants of Liyue. They lived through a bitter war and sacrificed much. All of Liyue, from harbor to chasm, is indebted to the yakshas for their protection over the years.
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
Zhongli takes the opportunity to move the topic of conversation to Xiao. He believes that Xiao will not turn away a companion like Lumine, subtly encouraging her to keep reaching out to the lonely yaksha. He even asks Lumine to pass his season’s greetings to Xiao on his behalf, even though there is nothing stopping him from doing it himself, ensuring that Lumine will have yet another reason to visit Xiao again.
Zhongli: I believe you have seen one of these yakshas in the flesh.
Lumine: Xiao.
Zhongli: Yes... These days, he often appears at Dihua Marsh.
Zhongli: He is given to solitude. But I suspect that he would not turn away a reliable companion such as yourself.
Zhongli: Should you happen to see him, please pass on my season's greetings.
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
The next day, Lumine finds Zhongli at Wangshu Inn. Once again, Zhongli steers the conversation towards Xiao, subtly hinting at the things Lumine could do for the yaksha. Zhongli even mentions that he was unable to meet with Xiao that day, perhaps hoping that after hearing this Lumine will visit Xiao to offer her comfort to him instead.
Zhongli: But Wangshu Inn is no mere guesthouse.
Zhongli: It was built tall to provide superior visibility for surveying the surrounding terrain. And it was built here, on this road, because it is one of the main routes for traffic into the region.
Zhongli: This is a strategic location that must be defended at all costs.
Lumine: No wonder Xiao is here so often.
Zhongli: Yes. That is one of the primary reasons that he frequents the inn.
Zhongli: Looking southeast from here, one can see all the way to Guyun Stone Forest.
Zhongli: With gods lying sealed beneath those rocks, the area is frequently afflicted with monster activity. Xiao often goes back and forth between here and Guyun.
Zhongli: Being constantly on the move must be tiring for him. My purpose in coming here was to give him a few words of comfort, but to my surprise, I did not find him on the roof...
Lumine: He must be busy with his duties.
Zhongli: Perhaps so. Nevertheless, this trip was by no means a waste. Besides, there shall be no shortage of opportunities to meet in the future.
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
Xiao spends his birthday walking along the beaches of Guyun Stone Forest, picking up Starconches, curious to see if the myths about them are true. Alas, it seems they are not. Although he might have been somewhat disappointed, he is not altogether discouraged. In the end the only things that matter to him are being able to hear the shadows he must fight against to perform his duty and Lumine’s voice. Indeed, her voice is all he needs, so he invites her to spend time together and talk about the Starconches.
Today, I walked alone on the beaches of the Guyun Stone Forest and picked up several Starconches along the way. I heard that they contain secrets and can be used to send messages. But when I put them to my ear, I heard no voice, just the hollow sound of the wind.
No matter.
The wrath of evil spirits, omens of calamity... and your voice. That's all I need to hear. When you're free, come talk to me about what you've heard from the Starconches.
(Xiao Birthday Mail 2022)
After receiving Xiao’s letter, Lumine accepts his invitation but instead of summoning him by calling his name she instead attempts to lure him by playing a tune on the flute. Xiao hears the song and he shows up immediately. Although it is suggested that Lumine is not very good at playing it, Xiao recognizes the melody.
Xiao: You're here.
Xiao: ...
Xiao: This tune... it brings up some old memories.
(Recounting Good Times 2022)
Perhaps Lumine asked Venti about it, after Xiao indicated that he has heard the bard’s melodies before. Otherwise it could be that she asked Zhongli or the other Adepti to learn what kind of melodies Xiao might have heard in the past.
Xiao: Venti? So that's the name he goes by. His tunes are... forget it.
(Profile Voice-Over)
Later that day, the two of them go out together, visiting places like the Huaguang Stone Forest. Xiao, who is always paying attention to Lumine, notices a leaf is stuck on her clothes so he removes it for her. A caring gesture. To his surprise, Lumine wants to keep it because she values everything Xiao does for her and she wants to keep a memento of the day they spent together.
This leaf was sticking to your clothes, so I removed it for you.
You want to keep it? I see...Holding on to something that goes with the wind seems unnecessary. But... you can have it.
(Xiao Birthday Post 2022)
In the evening Lumine prepares some Almond Tofu for him, but Xiao falls asleep and she decides not to disturb him. Maybe all this time Xiao has been pushing back his exhaustion and after relaxing with Lumine he finally let himself rest.
Paimon: Xiao! We brought freshly-made Almond Tofu, do you want to ea—
Lumine: Paimon, shhh...
(Xiao Birthday Shorts 2022)
Once again, Lumine visits Xiao for his birthday. She expresses the desire to take Xiao on a relaxing journey to see the world outside Liyue, but she understands Xiao’s commitment to his duty. In truth, his contact with Dijun already ended some time ago, but Xiao’s circumstances make things complicated and the yaksha hasn’t yet concluded that he doesn’t need to be bound by the past. Being understanding of this, Lumine instead chooses to bring the outside world to him.
To protect Liyue year-round, Xiao tirelessly purges the remnants of malevolent spirits, and he probably has little concept of what lies across the sea. Although Inazuma is no longer closed off, convincing Xiao to leave Liyue for a relaxing journey might be a challenge.
Instead, why not share some stories from my travels with him, along with some dishes I've learned along the way? I hope to make him feel the sensation of "traveling with me." (Teyvat Food Notes)
Although Xiao has some reservations regarding dishes from another nation, considering he already has trouble with food from his own land, he ultimately accepts the idea and is willing to try what Lumine cooks for him.
Xiao: Food from neighboring countries... that's fine.
Xiao: Hopefully, it's not something lacking in common sense.
(Teyvat Food Notes)
It is implied that Lumine invites Xiao to her Serenitea Pot while she is using the Mondstadt-style Cool Isle layout. It may or may not be for the purpose of showing Xiao parts from outside Liyue. Xiao comments on the Realm having Lumine’s distinct flavor, which makes her curious. Alas, he chooses to change the subject. Perhaps he is feeling a little shy to share those thoughts.
Xiao: Is this the Realm Within gifted to you by the Anemo Archon, the true ruler of the City of Song and Waves?
Xiao: It's said that the appearance of this realm changes based on its owner, and upon closer inspection, it indeed carries your distinct flavor.
Lumine: What does it taste like to you?…
Xiao: ...Let's get started on preparing the ingredients quickly; I have other tasks to attend to later.
(Teyvat Food Notes)
Naturally, Xiao doesn’t wish to sit idly while Lumine does all the work so he offers to help. He treats her words like an order, but Lumine insists that he is not a mere tool.
Xiao: ...Feel free to tell me what you need; I'm fine with being a tool.
Lumine: Don't say that, Xiao is not just a tool. But it's perfect timing. Can you help me grill the eel?
Xiao: Although I can't guarantee it will meet your expectations... but I can give it a try.
(Teyvat Food Notes)
Before long the Unagi Chazuke is ready. Xiao is surprised by how simple and quick the dish was to make, although it’s possible that he only thinks so because he enjoyed the time he spent with Lumine. Time flies in good company.
Xiao: It wasn't as complicated as I imagined, and it didn't take long to wait…
(Teyvat Food Notes)
Xiao eats the entire bowl and seems to enjoy it. Lumine is relieved; she was worried he might not like it. Xiao apologizes for not knowing what to say and being unable to think of any words of praise, presumably because simple words are not enough, but to Lumine the greatest compliment is that he was able to finish the whole bowl.
Lumine: (Taking the Unagi Chazuke, Xiao ate it heartily. He calmly finished the last sip of soup, put down the bowl, and fell silent for a moment.)
Xiao: Very convenient, not too hot, can be eaten quickly...
Lumine: (It surprised me; I thought it might not suit his taste…)
Xiao: Sorry, I can't think of any words to praise the food.
Lumine: (That Xiao could finish it is the greatest compliment.)
(Teyvat Food Notes)
During the Spices From the West event, Lumine invites her friends to her Serenitea Pot to try various dishes cooked with special spices. Xiao is, of course, one of the people she invites.
If Lumine gives him a dish he dislikes, despite his initial displeasure, Xiao doesn’t get angry but calmly asks her to try something else. Otherwise he politely declines if it’s a dish he thinks is not suitable for his tastes.
Xiao: Try something else next time.
Xiao: No need.
(Spices From the West)
If Lumine gives him a dish he likes, Xiao smiles and is then caught off guard when he realizes Lumine is staring at him. He must have looked really cute and handsome with that smile, so it was hard for her to look away.
Xiao: Mm... Not bad... Why are you staring at me?
(Spices From the West)
One day while exploring the deeper layers of the Chasm, Lumine meets Yanfei in the lowest depths. They are soon joined by Itto, Shinobu and then Yelan. An argument breaks out between Itto and Yelan, and when they unleash their respective Elemental powers the ground begins to shake and soon it collapses. Everyone then falls down into a previously unknown area underground.
Without wasting time, the group begins the search for an exit and while they are investigating the mysterious area, someone unexpected appears. When Lumine turns around, she sees a very familiar face.
???: ...
Lumine: ...!
Paimon: Ah! Oh, it's Xiao!
Yanfei: Conqueror of Demons? What are you doing here?
Xiao: Oh, I came down from above. I heard a noise, so I followed it here.
(Perilous Trail)
Although Paimon is the one who invites Xiao to join the team, it can be assumed that Lumine would have happily invited him herself.
Paimon: So you're not here by accident. Wanna team up?
Xiao: No, I have something else to do.
(Perilous Trail)
Xiao declines because he has something else to do. Lumine asks him if it’s an important matter, likely trying to determine whether she should insist on the invitation or not. Xiao, having grown closer to her, admits that he is looking for someone.
Lumine: Is it something important?
Xiao: ...I'm looking for someone.
(Perilous Trail)
Still, before he disappears he makes sure to warn everyone, including Lumine, to leave because the area is dangerous.
Xiao: You shouldn't be here. I would urge you to go back as soon as possible.
(Perilous Trail)
The group ventures further in, but fails to find an exit and instead walks in circles returning to where they started. Now even the way from which they fell has disappeared. The unknown space begins to feel ominous and after a few more failed attempts at finding an exit, Lumine decides to call Xiao for help.
Lumine: (Come to think of it, Xiao is here, too. He said we can always call his name if we get into trouble.)
Lumine: (Maybe it's worth a try...)
Paimon: Hey, Lumine? What's with the serious face? Do you have a plan?
Lumine: Well, I was just thinking that Xiao is also here, remember?
Paimon: Xiao... oh, right! Do you want to get him to help us?
Lumine: I think it's worth a try.
Paimon: Sure, let's give it a shot!
(Perilous Trail)
Lumine calls Xiao, but to her surprise she receives no answer. Xiao was constantly reminding her to call his name when she is in trouble and he always stressed that he would answer her call no matter the time or place. For Xiao to not answer her summons now, it means there is something very wrong with this place.
(You try reciting Xiao's name in your heart.)
Lumine: Xiao, can you hear me?
Paimon: ...
Lumine: ...
Lumine: Uh, Xiao?
Paimon: Huh, no response... Paimon thought Xiao would come no matter where we are.
Paimon: Oh no, does that mean even Xiao can't sense our presence here?
Lumine: (...)
Lumine: (Wonder what that could mean... What's the deal with this place?)
(Perilous Trail)
The group decides to rest for a while, but it seems time is very peculiar in this mysterious space. Everyone seems to have a wildly different perception of the passage of time and nobody feels any form of hunger. This is when the group fully comprehends how strange and possibly dangerous this place might be. Lumine immediately thinks of Xiao.
Lumine: (I wonder if Xiao is experiencing the same phenomenon...?)
(Perilous Trail)
Lumine tells everyone that she couldn’t reach Xiao so the group concludes the situation is rather grave.
(You tell everyone that you were unable to summon Xiao…)
Arataki Itto: That's pretty weird... Sounds like the little dude must be in danger.
Kuki Shinobu: Since he is an Adeptus, this kind of situation should be no trouble for him. I fear that this problem underground is bigger than we thought.
(Perilous Trail)
When Yelan arrives with news of having found a new passage, the group quickly moves to investigate it in hopes of finding the exit, but they only find yet another Domain. Still, they have no other options so they might as well try exploring it. Inside the Domain the group hears a strange voice and soon it becomes clear the voice belongs to Xiao who appears to be in danger.
???: Fush... is that... you...?
Paimon: Hey, did anyone else just hear that voice? It sounded super creepy!
???: ...No... this... ...look at me!
???: Don't make me... fight you!
Yanfei: Is some sort of battle taking place here? I wonder who could be involved...
???: No, if... still alive... why would you become like this?
???: I won't... attack you.
Paimon: That sounds like Xiao! Could he be in trouble?
Arataki Itto: Whoa, sounds like someone forgot to invite us to the fight... Let's go and help him!
Paimon: Yeah, but how are we gonna find him?
(Perilous Trail)
Eventually the group discovers a small fissure through which they see a shadow resembling Xiao so they try to communicate with him. While everyone is distracted by the strange phenomena in front of them, Lumine alone asks Xiao if he is okay. She is worried.
Yanfei: Conqueror of Demons!?
Paimon: Xiao? Is that you?
Xiao: ...
Arataki Itto: Quit tryin' to scare us, okay?
Paimon: Huh? Wait, is this some kind of illusion? Paimon can't touch him...
Yanfei: Conqueror of Demons, can you hear us?
Lumine: What happened? Are you okay?
(Perilous Trail)
Eventually Xiao responds. He is initially confused with the situation, but he quickly realizes what is happening. In his frantic attempt to tell them to get out, he inadvertently reveals his condition. Lumine immediately recognizes that Xiao is injured, but he dodges the question when she asks about it. He doesn’t want to worry her and, moreover, Xiao is more concerned with the group's safety than his own.
Xiao: A coincidence? Wait...
Xiao: Something's not right... *cough* Something's wrong with this domain... Leave, now! Get out of there!
Lumine: Wait a minute... Xiao, are you hurt?
Yelan: If we can, we should have him regroup with us as soon as possible.
Yanfei: Tell us what happened and where you are now. We'll come find you immediately.
Xiao: No, your safety is the top priority. It seems this space can...
Yanfei: Huh? He disappeared...
Paimon: Where'd he go? It sounded like he might be injured. We need to go help him!
(Perilous Trail)
The group continues onward to find Xiao, but they only encounter a strange door which seemingly shows people’s worst fears. The group takes turns trying the door, but they all end up turning back. Lumine, however, doesn’t. She pushes forward despite her fears in order to find Xiao. Even knowing that it might be a trap. Though ultimately she is led back to the beginning. Xiao is nowhere in sight.
With nothing else to do and nowhere else to go, the group decides to turn back and return to their provisional campsite for some rest. After all, it will be difficult to rescue Xiao if the group itself is on the verge of collapse. During this time, Lumine continues to worry about Xiao, who is alone and injured.
But as you discuss the situation, everyone notices more and more anomalies. Instead of taking you to the outside world, the new path leads to more confusion. Xiao, who is on his own, worries you the most...
(Perilous Trail)
After resting for a while Yanfei calls Lumine for a private discussion. Both of them are very worried about Xiao and haven’t stopped thinking about him.
Yanfei: I've been thinking about this place... Since we still don't know just what kind of danger we're up against, we can't afford to delay any longer. We have to find the Conqueror of Demons as soon as possible.
Lumine: That's just what I was thinking.
(Perilous Trail)
Yanfei concludes that the chaotic space is using the group’s desire to find Xiao as bait to lead them into dangerous places by projecting voices and images of him to them. She also suspects they might be able to use this phenomenon to their advantage.
The reason Yanfei called for a private talk with Lumine specifically is probably because Yanfei already noticed the bond between Xiao and Lumine. So if there is any chance of finding Xiao by manipulating the chaotic space’s properties, then Lumine’s desire should be the strongest of them all.
Yanfei: I think this gives us an opportunity. If the space creates phenomena meant to deceive us based on our imaginations, then we have to keep imagining, Lumine.
Yanfei: If we try to stay calm and listen carefully... Maybe, just maybe, we'll hear the Conqueror of Demons' voice again.
Yanfei: ...
Yanfei: Can you feel that? Let me see... I think it's here.
(Perilous Trail)
And indeed it seems to work. Soon, Yanfei and Lumine find Xiao’s trail and they follow along.
Yanfei: It's getting clearer!
???: ...This is... The Chasm... what did... go through here?
???: ... Fush... died... battle... hundred years ago... What is he doing here...
???: ...The... is that him?... Yaksha...
(Perilous Trail)
At last they discover another spatial rift and they are finally able to communicate with Xiao again. Xiao only reacts after hearing Lumine’s voice. She tries to figure out what happened, but Xiao dodges the questions because he doesn’t want to worry her.
Yanfei: Conqueror of Demons, can you hear me? It's Yanfei. Lumine and I are trying to find you.
Lumine: Xiao, are you there?
Xiao: ...Lumine? Yanfei?
Yanfei: It worked!
Yanfei: Are you okay?
Xiao: I'm fine.
Lumine: We heard the sound of you fighting...
Lumine: What happened?
(Perilous Trail)
Lumine urges Xiao to join her group, but he refuses, using his karma as a justification to stay away. Although his karma is a genuine threat and Xiao has a sincere desire to protect others from the danger he poses, he also doesn’t want to worry Lumine.
Lumine: Find a way to get to us.
Xiao: No.
Xiao: The darkness that sullies my soul is harmful to mortals.
(Perilous Trail)
Yanfei and Lumine don’t give up. During this discussion Xiao accidentally reveals that he is indeed in danger, something both of them pick up on as they give each other a knowing look.
Yanfei: Right now, we have more dangerous things to worry about than that. This space is using our urge to find you to lure us into traps.
Yanfei: Without you here with us, our search for you could very well lead us into danger.
Lumine: Please come.
Xiao: So you're in danger, too?
Lumine: (Uh-oh, he said "too"...)
(Perilous Trail)
Nevertheless, Xiao insists that he should stay away and the others should stop searching for him. But Yanfei, who has picked up on the close bond between Lumine and Xiao, uses Lumine as bait to convince Xiao. Of all the people trapped there, Lumine being in danger because of him is the last thing he wants.
Xiao: ...There was no need for you to search for me.
Yanfei: But we're worried about you. And earlier, Lumine was tricked into entering a dangerous place...
Lumine: It's true.
Xiao: ...
Xiao: How do we meet?
(Perilous Trail)
Following Yanfei’s advice, Xiao uses his power to break the imperceivable walls separating the different spaces. He goes quiet for a moment so Lumine worries, but soon he tells her to stand back and he emerges out of the spatial rift. Lumine immediately notices his injuries.
Lumine: Xiao?
Xiao: ...Stand back.
Yanfei: ...!
Lumine: !!!
Xiao: Phew... Hmm.
Lumine: (Oh no... he looks badly injured.)
(Perilous Trail)
Lumine and Yanfei lead Xiao back to their campsite. He is in a very bad shape. Lumine touches him gently while he holds his head in pain. Her gesture tells Xiao that she is there for him, but she does not do more out of fear of overstepping his boundaries.
When Xiao feels a little better, the first thing he says is that now they will not be split up, meaning that nobody should endanger themselves for his sake any longer. He doesn’t want to be a burden to others, especially to Lumine. The group tries to reassure him that he’s no burden and that he shouldn’t worry about anything else now. He needs to rest.
Xiao: Now, we can avoid getting split up.
Yanfei: A lot's happened here. But this wasn't just for our own safety. You're injured, we can't just leave you alone.
Xiao: It's just a flesh wound. I am fine. I shouldn't let myself be a burden to you.
Yanfei: You're not a burden. Don't think that for one second. We need you, all of us. For our sake, please, stay here. Please?
Xiao: Fine... As you wish.
Yelan: You're injured. Get some rest. Everything else can wait.
Lumine: Yes, wait until you get better.
Lumine: Don't worry about anything else.
Xiao: Alright.
(Perilous Trail)
Xiao finally lets his guard down after Lumine’s advice. She stays and watches over him for a while, amazed to see Xiao like this for the first time, but soon she leaves to let him be.
Lumine: (Xiao has closed his eyes and seems to be resting... Could he be dreaming? This is quite astonishing.)
Lumine: (Is a yaksha who never lowers his guard capable of having dreams?)
(Perilous Trail)
Lumine joins Yanfei and Yelan in discussing matters pertaining to the chaotic space and sharing all the new information each of them have discovered. During the conversation Lumine doesn’t stop thinking about Xiao.
Lumine: (And what did Xiao see back in that other space? Who was he fighting against?)
(Perilous Trail)
Later, Lumine returns to check on Xiao but she makes sure not to disturb him.
Xiao: ...
Lumine: (Xiao's eyes are tightly shut and he's not making a sound. No one has the heart to interrupt him.)
(Perilous Trail)
It is not known how much time passes, especially in that strange chaotic space, but Xiao eventually wakes up. Lumine is checking in on Paimon at the time so she doesn’t notice, but Yanfei does, and since she has come to know there is a deeper bond between him and Lumine, she immediately informs the latter about it.
Xiao: ...
Yanfei: Lumine, it looks like the Conqueror of Demons is awake.
(Perilous Trail)
Lumine rushes to his side to ask how he feels. Not wanting to worry her, Xiao says he is fine and warns her to keep her distance. He is tainted by karma and therefore he is dangerous, but it’s also a convenient excuse to keep Lumine away, so that she and everyone else won’t waste their time and energy being preoccupied with him.
Lumine: How do you feel?
Xiao: ...I'm fine. Don't worry.
Xiao: The karma I carry is dangerous to humans. Keep your distance.
Yanfei: Well, I have Adepti blood in me. So, I wouldn't worry too much.
Xiao: ...Even so.
(Perilous Trail)
Yanfei asks Xiao what happened before he joined the group. Whether it’s because of the dire situation or because Xiao has learned to be more open around Lumine, he speaks of the yakshas and his personal goal. During this conversation, Lumine quickly understands what Xiao is getting at.
Lumine: ...You found Fushe?
Xiao: ...
Yanfei: Wait, so it was Fushe you were fighting with? Did he injure you?
Xiao: ...Yes.
(Perilous Trail)
Xiao puts his own goals aside to focus on what he considers more important: getting everyone out of this dangerous place. His personal quest no longer matters because Xiao always puts everyone else’s needs above his own. Even more so now that Lumine is among the trapped.
He shares what he has learned about the chaotic space and warns everyone of what will happen if they remain here: they might be devoured, becoming wandering lost shadows. Xiao proposes a potential solution for this, which is that he may be able to create a passage out of this space using his power. The rest of the group, including Lumine, disagrees completely when they realize this plan means leaving Xiao behind.
Xiao: So... If I use all the energy I have, I may be able to tear a passage out of this chaotic space.
Xiao: ...I know how to fight to the bitter end. I can do this.
Lumine: But if this takes all the energy you have, you'll...!
Yanfei: No... No way. Even if what you're saying is true, I can't agree to this.
Paimon: Paimon neither! It's not much of an escape plan if we've gotta leave someone behind!
Lumine: We should leave together.
(Perilous Trail)
In order to get them to agree to his plan, Xiao tries to use the concept of a last will. The group is momentarily taken by surprise, but Yelan intervenes and opposes Xiao. She doesn’t want to sacrifice him to escape so she tries to make him see the errors of his idea. But due to a lack of any alternative plans available their discussion breaks into an argument.
Lumine begins to worry about the increasingly tense atmosphere. The way she words her thoughts could be interpreted as Lumine being especially concerned with Yelan’s harsh behavior towards Xiao, even though Lumine also disagrees with his plan.
Lumine: (Yelan seems really displeased...)
Lumine: (The atmosphere is so tense... What should I do?)
(Perilous Trail)
Luckily, Itto hears the commotion and interrupts the argument. He punches his way into a new path, but he drains all of his energy in the process, causing him to faint. Xiao, feeling guilty over this, apologizes. Shinobu reassures him there is nothing to apologize for. Itto did this because he truly believed he was helping. She continues saying that everyone here is important, including Xiao. Although it is a general statement, it may also be seen as Shinobu having noticed the bond between Xiao and Lumine too.
Kuki Shinobu: Everyone's important. We have to support each other if we're going to get out of here. Your survival is of huge importance to some people... no, to a whole lot of people. (Perilous Trail)
But this is not enough to alleviate Xiao’s guilt, so he goes on ahead to find a solution to their current predicament. Lumine tries to stop him, and perhaps wants to talk to him, but it’s too late.
Xiao: I will find a way.
Lumine: Wait...
(Perilous Trail)
Now that things calmed down, Yanfei takes this opportunity to apologize on Yelan’s behalf and notes that Lumine and Xiao seem to be rather close.
Yanfei: By the way, um... You and Xiao seem pretty close, huh? Yelan got a bit worked up just now, so I just wanted to apologize on her behalf.
(Perilous Trail)
Though Yanfei admits she agrees with the things Yelan said to him. She goes on to say that Yelan is against self-sacrifice due to comrades she has lost in the past. This discussion and what it means for someone to live at the cost of another’s life leaves Lumine in contemplation. It’s possible that she is reminded of Xiao being the last surviving yaksha. Whether Lumine recognizes Xiao’s survivor’s guilt at this point in time is unknown.
Yanfei: Maybe being a survivor is what makes her so against seeing other people sacrifice themselves.
Yanfei: How can things ever be the same again, knowing that your life was saved when others weren't? In a way, salvation can also be a burden.
Yanfei: ...If I were her, I'm not sure if I would have done anything different.
Lumine: ...
(Perilous Trail)
Lumine and Yanfei team up to investigate the new Domain that has opened up. The space inside is quite strange, but they manage to reunite with Yelan and later find Xiao. Upon seeing him, Lumine calls out to Xiao.
Xiao: ...Fushe, I can't believe someone like you would end up as a lost soul underground.
Lumine: Xiao!
(Perilous Trail)
The group realizes there might be hidden enemies around so they run to help Xiao, but he tells them to stand back. This is his fight. Xiao recognizes that this is a mere illusion, a projection of Fushe, but it’s still something he has to do himself. Xiao wins, but the fight takes a toll on him as he hasn’t fully recovered yet. Lumine rushes to his side, worried about him and perhaps hoping to help him, but Xiao continues to dismiss his well-being and tells her not to worry.
Xiao: Ugh! ...*cough*
Xiao: Enough... phantom, be gone!
???: Argh!
Paimon: Xiao, are you okay?
Lumine: You haven't even recovered from your injuries yet...
Xiao: This is my purpose. Don't worry about me.
(Perilous Trail)
Xiao apologizes for his stubbornness and explains this may be the last time he ever sees Fushe, even if it’s an illusion. It seems the nameless yaksha had been Fushe after all, and Xiao’s goal has now been fulfilled. Though the conversation soon takes a darker turn. Lumine stays quiet, perhaps not knowing what to say in such a heavy moment.
Xiao: Bosacius had already gone mad before he disappeared. There was no way of knowing if his memories were intact.
Yelan: He still took part in the battle of The Chasm, despite having gone mad?
Lumine: ...
Xiao: We yakshas are not a race that thrive in peacetime. It's likely that he was drawn by the scent of bloody war.
Xiao: Slaughter is what we do best... Maybe it's the only thing we know.
Lumine: ...
(Perilous Trail)
But this is no time to linger. This place is dangerous and they have to move on.
Xiao: If we don't leave, we may meet the same fate.
Lumine: Let's go.
(Perilous Trail)
The group moves further ahead and the Domain begins to read and reflect Lumine’s mind. Here Xiao learns about her fears and troubles. Her fear of the emptiness of the Abyss that took her twin away. But he says nothing because he doesn’t wish to pry.
Xiao: ...
Lumine: ...
Lumine: I think this is my memory.
Paimon: Your memory? Of what?
Lumine: Of emptiness. That's the power of the Abyss.
Paimon: The Abyss? So... this place is created purely based on your memory?
Lumine: I'm afraid so. Because I will always remember...
Lumine: ...That the Abyss took my twin away.
(Perilous Trail)
Before exiting the strange Domain, Xiao and Lumine have a brief conversation during which he shares some information about Fushe, though he puts himself down in the process.
Xiao: Fushe was the leader of the Five Yakshas under Yanwang Dijun's command. He could control Electro energy.
Xiao: Unlike me, he was both a formidable warrior and a talented commander.
(Perilous Trail)
Thanks to everyone’s desire to find the Fantastic Compass, the chaotic space manifests one for them. After they examine the device, the group learns the truth about the events that transpired at the Chasm. Further discussions lead to Yanfei figuring out a way to use the Fantastic Compass to escape the chaotic space. She believes that if Xiao and Yelan channel their energies into the device, which works as an amplifier, they may be able to create an opening.
Yelan and Xiao activate the Fantastic Compass together, creating a platform of light. Xiao insists that he will maintain the energy flow and instructs everyone to stand back. By focusing his power into the device, he manages to have the platform ascend. It looks like they can finally escape!
Alas, shadows emerge from the darkness and they quickly surround the group. Yelan, Yanfei and Lumine do their best to fend them off, while Xiao pours all of his energy into the device to hasten their ascent. Despite their efforts, darkness continues to grow rapidly. It catches up to them and it threatens to swallow them completely. Xiao uses his power to break through the darkness, but the cost is too much.
After expending too much energy, Xiao, who likely has not fully recovered from his previous injuries, struggles to power the device and the platform begins to crack. He can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it’s still out of reach.
Xiao glances at Lumine. He has to get everyone out, but most of all he has to get her out. Meanwhile, Lumine is visibly worried about Xiao.
Realizing they will not be able to make it out at this rate, Xiao musters the last of his strength. He looks at Lumine one more time, for this will be the last time he will ever see her.
He envelops everyone in his purest form of Anemo energy, free from the karma that normally taints his power, in order to safely send everyone to the surface. Out of them all, Lumine is the first one to realize what he is planning to do. But it’s too late. They are all gone in an instant. The platform breaks and Xiao falls into the dark depths.
Xiao closes his eyes, accepting his fate, and prepares for the end to come. But it doesn’t. A golden light embraces Xiao, bringing him to the surface. Lumine runs up to him immediately. She gently places her hand over his shoulder, trying to see if she can help him in any way.
After these harrowing events, the group has some brief conversations. Xiao patiently waits for Lumine a few steps away, something which she notices. Evidently, there are things he wishes to tell her and Lumine wants to talk to him too. A lot has happened after all.
Paimon: Paimon too, Paimon wants to come too!
Lumine: Paimon, we have other things to do.
Paimon: Huh? Ugh, fine...
(Perilous Trail)
Lumine sees her friends off and approaches Xiao. Not wanting to interrupt Lumine or take away from her precious time, he first asks her to make sure she is now free, although he misunderstands the situation a little.
Xiao: ...
Lumine: Xiao.
Xiao: Finished taking care of business?
Paimon: Oh, there wasn't any "business"... we were just saying goodbye to our friends.
(Perilous Trail)
Xiao, being somewhat oblivious to social cues or to the ways he comes across, is surprised to learn that Lumine knew he was waiting for her.
Lumine: ...Alright.
Xiao: You knew I was waiting for you?
Lumine: Yes, it was obvious.
Xiao: ...Really…
(Perilous Trail)
He invites Lumine to a place where they can discuss in peace, but only if she is willing. Xiao doesn’t want to occupy her time or selfishly ask her to listen to his troubled thoughts. She might prefer to rest after all that happened. Lumine, however, is happy to join Xiao.
Xiao: There's somewhere I want to go. If you have the time, you can join me.
Paimon: Where is it?
Xiao: A place that has to do with the yakshas.
(Perilous Trail)
Together they visit Tongque’s temple and there Xiao opens up to Lumine. He shares his very intimate thoughts. Things he felt in that chaotic space, things he believes about the yakshas, his thoughts on Fushe’s demise and even his own.
Xiao: The temple up ahead was built to remember Pervases.
Xiao: ...Maybe I came here because I had a realization.
Paimon: You mean back when we were underground?
Lumine: What did you realize?
Xiao: It's hard to put into words... Seeing Fushe gave me the false impression that I'd traveled back into the past.
Xiao: ...You could dress up the yaksha's life and call us valiant warriors, veterans of war, but... the truth is, we are slaughterers, and nothing more.
Xiao: For Fushe, perhaps dying in the heat of a great battle was no tragedy.
Xiao: And perhaps the same is true for me. After living for so long... to die in the act of saving others would not have been a terrible thing.
Lumine: I think you know that that isn't true.
Xiao: Mm. So maybe... these thoughts are my own form of insanity.
(Perilous Trail)
But Lumine has come to understand Xiao well, and she recognizes these thoughts aren’t what he truly believes. Indeed, Xiao acknowledges those thoughts might be insane; either a result of the karma that always threatens his sanity or a result of his twisted mindset. Or both. Somewhere at the back of his mind, he had a desire to live and get out of that space with everyone else. If that wasn’t the case, he wouldn’t have taken the time to pick up a memento of Fushe with the intention of bringing it back to the surface.
Lumine relays Ushi’s message to Xiao while also adding her own comments. Xiao doesn’t need to keep living in solitude. There are people who care about him and are willing to be by his side despite the harmful karma he carries. Lumine is one such person.
Lumine: Xiao, we've got something to tell you.
Paimon: Ushi said he has the power to exorcise demons, so people use him to fend them off. But after he met Itto, he's never left his side.
Paimon: He also said that he doesn't have any grand philosophies, he just thinks we should spend our lives around the people who make us happiest.
Paimon: Maybe there aren't so many rules about how we should or shouldn't live our lives in this world after all. So... he hopes you can come to understand that even though the power of a yaksha may be harmful to other people, it doesn't mean you shouldn't hang out with them.
Lumine: There will always be someone willing to be by your side.
Paimon: Yep, like people with Visions — they have more resistance against your power, right? And, and... Well, anyway, there's loads of people out there who really care about you!
(Perilous Trail)
Hearing this, Xiao is reminded of the things his old yaksha companions used to say. He reveals their desires to Lumine as well as the fact that he was the only one who did not think like them.
Xiao: Hah. Suddenly, you sound a lot like Fushe and the others.
Xiao: They used to talk about how they hoped to live a mortal's life once the world was at peace. I think... I was the only one who didn't think that way.
(Perilous Trail)
Although Lumine already knows about the other yakshas, Xiao properly introduces them to her for the first time. When Lumine had first brought up the yakshas in Xiao’s Story Quest, he dismissed the book as fiction, but now he is willing to talk to her about his fallen companions.
Xiao: The Fushe recorded in the Fantastic Compass had lost his sanity. He addressed the people around him as "Jinpeng," "Minu," and others. These are the names of the Five Yakshas.
Xiao: I am Jinpeng, and Minu is General Xinyuan.
Xiao: The others are Fanan, or "General Luojuan," and Yingda, or "General Huoshu". I heard that people call the five of us "Yakshas: The Guardian Adepti"... Hah.
(Perilous Trail)
Xiao admits to Lumine that he could not have escaped on his own power alone. He comes to understand and acknowledge the problems of his twisted mentality.
Xiao: I couldn't have done all I did without everyone's help. Even in the final moments, it took every bit of my power to break free from that place...
Paimon: Well Paimon still thinks you were amazing!
Xiao: ...Yanfei and Yelan are correct. I always prepare for the worst-case scenario. This mindset is deeply rooted in me... Even so, it was the most optimistic solution I could think of.
Xiao: If Yanwang Dijun hadn't saved me in that moment, I don't think I would've been able to escape.
(Perilous Trail)
Unfortunately, Xiao has trouble getting over his guilt. Yanwang Dijun had to step in, and Xiao feels indebted to him once again. Lumine tries to comfort Xiao, telling him it’s okay because helping each other out is how people survive. Whether that truly got through to Xiao is unknown, but he did not completely deny Lumine’s words, which is a good sign. If it’s her, he is willing to reconsider.
Xiao: In the end, I still had to burden another.
Paimon: But that's how it should be, right? You've known Zhongli... uh, Yanwang Dijun for such a long time, and you've helped him before. So he helped you back, what's the big deal?
Lumine: Supporting each other is how people survive.
Xiao: ...Perhaps.
(Perilous Trail)
When the group was escaping from that mysterious and chaotic space, both Xiao and Lumine were able to sense what was left of Fushe’s memory. Xiao is happy to know that Fushe will be remembered by someone like Lumine.
Xiao: In the moment that we escaped from that space, I could sense what was left of Fushe's memory. If I had to say what I gained from this trip, I think that would be it.
Lumine: I think I felt it too.
Xiao: It's good that one more person will remember him.
(Perilous Trail)
In his final moments, Fushe was able to remember his identity and his family — the other yakshas. He passed away in the company of his brother-in-arms while remembering the people important to him and the duty he proudly performed until the very end.
Xiao admits that today he was able to open up to Lumine and divulge some very private thoughts. Lumine is someone Xiao can talk to without holding back too much.
Xiao: I've said so much today. But I don't need to hold back as much when I talk to you.
Xiao: Have you ever had a moment where you felt like you were aware of your destiny? The potential of life, the approach of death... whatever it might have been.
Xiao: By now, I have accepted that destiny is the one disaster that the yaksha knows most keenly of all. We are destined to misery... and yet we have no fear.
(Perilous Trail)
That said, Xiao still has some reservations and looks for excuses to share his thoughts so there is still some distance between him and Lumine that they have to overcome. Even so, it’s a big progress compared to the early days of their friendship.
Lumine: Are you sure it's okay for you to tell me all this?
Xiao: It matters not. Yanwang Dijun had said that you are a witness. It is right that the events of the world are relayed to you.
(Perilous Trail)
Xiao is finally able to get closure and find some relief for his tormented heart, something he shares with Lumine.
Xiao: Fanan, Minu, and Yingda all perished, and only Fushe's fate was unknown. This has always stung my heart like a thorn. That is why I went to The Chasm, despite being fully aware of the danger.
Xiao: ...Now that I know what happened in The Chasm back then, I can finally put this matter to rest.
(Perilous Trail)
He thinks of all the yakshas that have perished in battle, but Lumine tells him all them were heroes. Until now Xiao has only seen the yakshas as slaughterers but he begins to change his mind. He accepts Lumine’s advice and everything she has told him today. Even someone tainted like Xiao deserves to spend time with those he cherishes.
Xiao: Too many yakshas have become casualties of battle. We are like a flock of birds scattered to the four corners of the world. And in the end, as Fanan said... it's rare for a yaksha to find repose for their soul.
Xiao: Fushe, Boyang, and all those soldiers...
Lumine: No, Xiao... They are all heroes.
Xiao: Heroes...
Xiao: ...I like that word.
Xiao: Maybe the world will never be free of disaster. But there is good in the world, too. Even the darkest hearts have room for those they cherish.
Xiao: I accept your advice. From this day on, heroes will always look out for each other.
(Perilous Trail)
After this Xiao falls silent and Lumine understands it’s time to let him be. There is no need for explanations. Lumine can already tell what is in his heart.
(You observe Xiao)
The World is Silent; No One Speaks: (Xiao says nothing more. Complex emotions run across his face as he looks at the temple to Tongque.)
The World is Silent; No One Speaks: (Sadness, disappointment, relief... They are all there, yet are only a small part of a far larger whole.)
The World is Silent; No One Speaks: (His expression is akin to that of a person who has been out in the blizzard for too long and seen far too much of it before finally gaining a place of respite from the battering snow.)
(Perilous Trail)
Later, Lumine visits Zhongli to thank him for his help at the Chasm. Though Zhongli denies his involvement in hopes that Xiao will not feel guilty and indebted to him. Paimon mentions that Xiao admitted he would not have been able to escape without Zhongli’s help, something that surprises Zhongli. He is someone who knows Xiao well, so he is happy to know the yaksha is opening up. And it’s all thanks to Lumine.
Paimon: Xiao also said that he wouldn't have been able to escape without your help.
Zhongli: Oh? Did he say so? Interesting.
Zhongli: How time flies — even he has learned to open up to others.
