It is unknown where, if at all, Xiao’s 2020 birthday fits on the timeline as it was published before the game’s release. His message implies that Lumine went out of her way to find his date of birth, possibly by asking Zhongli and/or the other Adepti.
My birthday? No-one has celebrated it in a thousand years, so how did you...
There is no need to fret. This was a human custom from the first.
But if you must... let us go and have a bowl of almond tofu.
(Xiao Birthday Post 2020)
While traveling through Liyue, Lumine comes across Wangshu Inn in Dihua Marsh, and she takes on a few commissions from its owners to help them deal with an emerging monster problem in the inn’s vicinity. Through these commissions, Lumine hears strange tales about the inn and its guests. Unbeknownst to her, she is already learning things about Xiao. Moreover, Lumine hears of a “young gentleman” and becomes curious about him, but Huai'an directs her to the boss.
Huai'an: But some people, such as a certain young gentleman obsessed with peace and quiet, find that simply intolerable. And when something upsets him, it usually ends up upsetting the rest of Dihua Marsh too...
(Business in a Marsh)
Verr Goldet: The bigger issue is... if any of them was unfortunate enough to run into a certain young gentleman...
(Guest from Afar)
Huai'an: Pardon? Who's the young gentleman? ...That's a question for the boss.
(Business in a Marsh)
In a subsequent commission Lumine asks Verr Goldet about the young gentleman and it is implied that she might have already noticed him resting on the roof.
Verr Goldet: Hmm? Oh, the young gentleman? I would have thought you'd seen him around.
Verr Goldet: Perhaps you've noticed him resting on the roof of the inn? He does that occasionally.
Verr Goldet: But if you do notice him, try not to disturb him. He prefers to be left alone.
(Guest from Afar)
Lumine and Xiao meet for the first time during the Liyue Archon Quest. Lumine is on a mission to meet with the Adepti to clear her name of wrong accusations as well as to deliver the news of Yanwang Dijun’s passing. Her quest brings her to the Wangshu Inn where the rumored Conqueror of Demons dwells.
The Adeptus is nowhere to be found and the uppermost balcony is empty, so Lumine takes a moment to admire the beautiful scenery, only to be caught off guard when Xiao suddenly appears beside her. It seems the elusive Adeptus who avoids people took an interest in the curious Traveler.
It is not known if Xiao was capable of sensing something different about Lumine. However, seeing as he was able to notice traces of a special blessing in Diona, while a normal human like Kazuha could perceive the elements in Lumine, it is very possible that Xiao was indeed able to sense that something about Lumine’s aura was different, even if he might not have understood what it was exactly.
Although he praises Lumine’s forethought, he attempts to turn her away, for being around an Adeptus is dangerous, especially one marred by karma like himself, and there is no time for explanations nor does he wish to discuss the matter. The sooner she departs, the better. Xiao instructs her to leave and then he vanishes.
Xiao: A Sigil of Permission? You came prepared.
Xiao: Mortal souls are not as resilient as those of Adepti, and their blood can't bear such a concentration of Adeptal energy.
Xiao: It's for your own good, hurry up and leave.
(Of the Land Amidst Monoliths)
Lumine is not one to give up so easily, however. She consults with Verr Goldet on what to do, and returns with a serving of Almond Tofu — Xiao’s favourite dish — as well as a Satisfying Salad made by her. Xiao accepts her considerate offer and Lumine has the chance to talk to him about all that has transpired with Dijun. It is here that Lumine first learns of Xiao’s gentle side hidden beneath the aloof exterior.
Paimon: That... Dusky Ming. She's...
Xiao: When conquering demons, on occasion, you can come across spirits who have never hurt anyone, yet are not yet able to be moved on.
Xiao: So I asked the innkeeper and the boss if they could keep her here for a time…
(Of the Land Amidst Monoliths)
When Lumine meets Little Luo in Qingce Village, she discovers even more of Xiao’s soft side that he seemingly hides behind the stoic appearance of an Adeptus. And from Dongsheng she learns how dedicated Xiao is to his duty of protecting Liyue. Xiao is kind, loyal and devoted.
Little Luo: One day, when I was in the forest, I met a handsome, dashing adeptus — it was as if he had popped right out of a story book!
Little Luo: I smiled at him, but he didn't smile back.
Little Luo: He just returned the doll that the hilichurls stole back to me…
(NPC Dialogue)
Dongsheng: But the good times couldn't last. I got into an accident in Dihua Marsh, and was seriously injured.
Dongsheng: Fortunately, a masked adeptus came to my rescue, and I was barely able to escape with my life.
(NPC Dialogue)
When Xiao and Lumine first meet atop the terrace at Wangshu Inn, the background music that plays is called Lovers’ Oath. The name may be a reference to the belief that Wangshu Inn is a popular spot for lovers, a haven for their moonlit rendezvous.
The inn that stands at the southern end of Dihua Marsh seems to serve as something other than a resting place for guests. They say that Wangshu Inn is a haven for lovers' moonlit rendezvous. Folk stories also have it that even ones as august as the Adepti sometimes bask in the moonlight here. (Viewpoint)
In Chinese mythology 月下老人 (Yuè Xià Lǎorén), the Old Man Under the Moon, is a god of marriage and love, and as the name suggests he is believed to live on the moon. He always carries a book in which are recorded all of the marriages that shall take place on earth. He also carries a bag of red threads that ties prospective couples together. His legends serve as the basis for the Red Thread of Fate and the Chinese often say, “Matches are made in Heaven and
the bond of fate is forecast from the Moon”.
The Chinese title of the Lovers’ Oath soundtrack 蒲苇如丝 (pú wěi rú sī) translates to “reeds like silk”. It is used to describe the soft and gentle movement of reeds, akin to the delicate and soft texture of silk. It is commonly used to express tenderness, softness, grace and elegance.
This is also an idiom expressing that one's love will endure and last forever. The phrase is taken from the Chinese poem 孔雀东南飞 (Southeast the Peacock Flies), more specifically this part:
君当作磐石 You shall be the unyielding boulder,
妾当作蒲苇 I shall be the bending reed.
蒲苇纫如丝 Reeds are pliable yet strong like silk
磐石无转移 But the boulder never sways or yields.
The poem tells of the tragic love story of Jiao Zhongqing and his wife Liu Lanzhi; a story of how they were nearly torn apart by their families, of defying the social order and eventually ending their lives to stay together forever as they had vowed. In this verse, Liu Lanzhi uses metaphors of rocks and reeds to describe the stance she and her husband must take in the face of hardships.
After intercepting the Fatui’s attempt at seizing the Geo Gnosis, the ancient god Osial is awakened by the Harbinger in an attempt to force the Geo Archon out of his hiding. Lumine soon finds herself atop the Jade Chamber where she meets with the Qixing and the Adepti, including Xiao who is surprised to see her; possibly thinking the matter of Osial doesn’t and shouldn’t be her concern.
Xiao: What... are you doing here?
(A New Star Approaches)
It is unknown if Xiao is aware of Lumine’s identity as an outlander Traveler, with a unique body and constitution, at this point in time, but after other Adepti share their power with her, he too shares some of his own.
Xiao: The name “yaksha” means “swiftness”.
Xiao: Take my power, and run as I do.
(A New Star Approaches)
Things seem to go well for a while, until Osial counter-attacks with great force which damages the Jade Chamber and causes the platform to break. Lumine has no time to escape and she falls. Luckily, the nimble yaksha catches her mid-air and brings her back to safety.
There were others who fell, and were subsequently saved by the Adepti, but Xiao chose to save Lumine specifically. Perhaps her brief display of thoughtfulness during their short meeting, going out of her way to bring Almond Tofu to talk to him, left an impression on Xiao.
After Xiao and Lumine arrive on the remaining safe area of the Jade Chamber, he helps her stand and he gently moves his hand to better hold hers. His words to her are caring and said in a softer tone, unlike previously, because this is who Xiao truly is.
Xiao: Be careful now.
(Of the Land Amidst Monoliths)
Later Xiao shares his power with Lumine once more when all gathered Adepti lend their combined power to her in order to destroy the Jade Chamber and plummet it into Osial. When peace returns to Liyue, Xiao is eager to leave. His karma is dangerous and he is uncomfortable being surrounded by a crowd of people, so Xiao is not seen again for some time.
In Zhongli’s Voice-Over about Xiao, he asks Lumine to deliver medicine to the yaksha, which can be seen as a form of trust and intimacy. It is not known where this event fits on the timeline, but it implies that Xiao is willing to be open about his vulnerability to Lumine.
Zhongli: You speak of the young Adeptus of the Guili Plains... Ah... even to this day, he's still fulfilling his duty... Oh, please give him this Remedium Tertiorum on my behalf. Ah, yes, take care not to let little Paimon sneak a bite, the strength of this medicine... is far beyond what an ordinary person can endure.
(Profile Voice-Over)
Another interpretation is that Zhongli believes Xiao might be willing to open up to Lumine due to her being a neutral party with no previous history, and he uses the medicine as an impetus. Alternatively, Xiao has already opened up to Lumine and is willing to take medicine from her. Zhongli, understanding that Xiao feels more comfortable with her than his lord, prefers to have Lumine deliver the medicine.
Sometime after the events of the Archon Quest, Lumine meets Xiao while she accompanies Ganyu on her Adeptal trials. Xiao doesn’t interact with Lumine too much, as he is focused on the training trial and he doesn’t want to spend any unnecessary amount of time around others, likely due to his karma. That said, Lumine sees that Xiao can be approachable and admirable in his own way, despite his strict words and strong opinions.
Lumine: It seems that Xiao understands Ganyu quite well.
Lumine: Xiao might be a good teacher after all.
Xiao: There's no need to report to me. Seeking validation from others is of no use in training.
Xiao: The results of your training should only be for self-evaluation, making it easier for you to improve.
Ganyu: I see... I'll keep that in mind.
Paimon: Xiao always has his own perspective...
Lumine: He has admirable individuality.
(Ganyu Story Quest)
In Xiao’s Collected Miscellany, Dainsleif speaks of a ray of light that could shine into Xiao’s dark world. The ray of light is, of course, Lumine. She is seen wielding light powers during the battle against the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles and is generally associated with the imagery of light. Dainsleif alludes to two possible outcomes for Xiao’s future and, fortunately, the hopeful one is already set in motion.
Dainsleif: I know that Adepti suffer heartache just as I do, but I cannot know Xiao's future. Will Xiao be ravaged by the unending war he wages and be plunged into despair? Or will he meet someone who understands his sacrifice and can shine a ray of light into his dark world…
(Collected Miscellany)
While investigating Starsnatcher, who Lumine suspects to be a deceiver fooling people under the pretense of being an Adeptus, she comes across the book “Yakshas: The Guardian Adepti”. In it she discovers the story of the yakshas. She learns of their noble deeds, their sacrifice and the hardships they endured until all of them fell or vanished. All except Xiao, the last surviving yaksha, who himself suffers greatly from the effects of karmic debt.
She later encounters Xiao while he is killing mutated Hilichurls. Believing these mutations to be caused by his own karma, Xiao’s guilt and fear of being a burden to others lead him to be more polite and responsive than usual. But when he discovers that Lumine read about his past in the aforementioned book, he quickly dismisses it as fiction. Xiao is not yet ready to talk about his past life with her. He keeps his guard up; he doesn’t want to be pitied and he doesn’t want to reveal his vulnerabilities to anyone.
Xiao: ...?
Lumine: We read about your past in a book.
Lumine: We were just reading a book called "Yakshas: The Guardian Adepti."
Xiao: I see. You must mean that piece of literati fan fiction from a few hundred years ago.
Xiao: Hmph. All things are impermanent, and to exist is to suffer. We yakshas have no need of sympathy or tears.
(Xiao Story Quest)
Paimon persuades Xiao to let her and Lumine help him purge a cavern of demonic influence by treating the assistance as penance for being “rude” to him earlier. Xiao, being familiar with the desire for atonement and knowing Lumine is quite strong, decides that it may be alright for them to tag along with him this one time.
While clearing the cavern, Xiao learns of Starsnatcher and realises that he is to blame for the Hilichurls congregating in this place. He concludes that he must confiscate the Sigil of Permission that’s currently in Starsnatcher’s hands. A brief misunderstanding occurs which may be the time Lumine learns of Xiao’s struggles in social situations.
Paimon: And it just so happens that we've got a real Adeptus with us too! If Xiao were to teach Starsnatcher a lesson, you can bet he'll never dare to pose as an Adeptus ever again!
Xiao: No. I only slay demons — I do not kill mortals.
Paimon: ...Who said anything about killing him!?
Xiao: …
(Xiao Story Quest)
Dealing with mortals is troublesome. Xiao chooses to confront Starsnatcher through the Dream Trawler art. This way he can talk to a mortal without harming them with his karma. Knowing that the Lumine’s goals align with his, Xiao asks her for assistance with preparations, and in return (he dares not ask favors without recompense) he will teach her his Adeptus art — one he likely uses for his own meditation to keep karma at bay.
When Lumine returns with the necessary items for the ritual, Xiao learns that Tongque was still lingering in the mortal realm. After the Starsnatcher issue is dealt with, Lumine meets Xiao at Wangshu Inn. She finds him reminiscing over Tongque. As Xiao recalls the past, he decides to try his old companion’s favourite dish for the first time. This way he might be able to connect with him or honor him in some way.
This is the first time Lumine witnesses a small glimpse of Xiao’s vulnerable side as he lets his guard down ever so slightly. Still, now that things got more personal, Xiao wants to be alone. He is not used to company, especially at a time like this. Lumine respects his wishes.
Xiao: Was there anything else? I... am accustomed to eating alone.
Lumine: We'll leave you be then...
Paimon: (Xiao seems a bit lost in his memories... Best we don't disturb him...)
(Xiao Story Quest)
Some time after the events of Xiao’s Story Quest Lumine helps around Wangshu Inn with various errands. She learns from Yanxiao that, due to him being very busy lately, Xiao hasn’t been able to have his daily serving of Almond Tofu. Hearing this Lumine decides to fulfill this small wish for the yaksha in return for his previous help. Cooking for another person can be seen as an act of intimacy.
Not knowing where to find him and how to reach him, she decides to simply wait at the inn. Luckily, Xiao does indeed show up the next day.
Lumine: (When Xiao found out there was no Almond Tofu prepared today and was about to leave, I stopped him.)
Lumine: (I said I can make Almond Tofu too and wanted to use it as a token of appreciation for his previous help.)
Lumine: (Xiao stayed silent for a moment, said nothing, and walked away. I stood there, unsure whether to follow him or not, and soon heard Xiao stopping.)
Xiao: I see you haven't prepared the ingredients either. What are you waiting for?
Lumine: (I am determined to make the most delicious Almond Tofu ever!)
(Teyvat Food Notes)
Surprisingly, Xiao doesn’t vanish the way he usually does. He stays to observe the process of making Almond Tofu. Even though Xiao doesn’t speak much, Lumine senses his curiosity so she explains the recipe step by step, from lengthy theories about the ingredients to the method of preparing them. Lumine is able to understand Xiao without exchanging words.
Lumine: (Although Xiao didn't say anything, I could sense that he was a bit curious about the process, so I had to perform well.)
Lumine: (The less Xiao spoke, the more I wanted to enlighten him with a bunch of things.)
(Teyvat Food Notes)
After a while the Almond Tofu is ready, but Lumine has been preparing something special for him. An Almond Tofu recipe that’s similar to the original but without wolfberries and instead with the addition of iridescent sugar beads and green soft candy blocks.
Xiao: Can we eat now?
Lumine: Wait a moment!
Lumine: I want to give you another special Almond Tofu that you can't get at Wangshu Inn.
Xiao: …Alright.
Lumine: Look, these arranged sugar beads are very similar to the color of your necklace!
(Teyvat Food Notes)
Xiao tastes every portion of this special Almond Tofu, which later goes on to be his Specialty Dish despite him not being the one to make it. Xiao is the only character whose Specialty Dish is made by Lumine.
Xiao: I have no interest in mortal food. Cooking is tedious, and the wait is long. Almond Tofu alone is what I can force down. The taste of Almond Tofu is very similar to “Sweet Dream”...
(Teyvat Food Notes)
Lumine too takes a bite of the Almond Tofu she made. She finds it pretty good and is happy with the results. This Almond Tofu is worthy of being a thank-you gift for Xiao.
After finishing his own portion, Xiao sits silently in place. At this point Lumine is already beginning to understand the way Xiao thinks.
Lumine: (I could tell what he was thinking.)
Lumine: Oh, this time it's to thank you for your previous help, no need to pay.
Xiao: ...Thanks.
Lumine: But I have a question I'd like to ask.
Xiao: Ask, although I might not be able to give you an answer.
Lumine: What you just mentioned, “Sweet Dream”, what is it?
Xiao: “Sweet Dream”...
Lumine: (Xiao fell silent for a moment.)
Xiao: Their dreams. My karma.
(Teyvat Food Notes)
Though it’s still a bit too soon for him to open up to her, Xiao is starting to trust Lumine and feel more comfortable around her, enough to let moments of vulnerability slip through.
The Developer Insight published around the time of Xiao’s release as a playable character details the journey behind his creation, from concept to story. It also offers more insight into the relationship between him and Lumine. Overtime Xiao comes to deeply trust Lumine, while she begins to understand who Xiao truly is behind his mask.
The Traveler's first impression of Xiao is most likely to be of a silent and brooding individual, a courageous and competent fighter, and someone who harbors great suffering. This suffering comes from within Xiao himself. One aspect is that the years of intense, never-ending battle against the remnants of defeated gods have led to him resigning himself to the fact that fighting is all he is good at. The other aspect is that the remnants have a negative effect on him, while the constant killing places a karmic burden on him, causing him mental and spiritual anguish.
After the Traveler has spent some time with Xiao, perhaps they can sense that deep down, Xiao has a gentler side. Xiao is by no means a cruel and callous individual, he is simply reticent to show his emotions to others.
During the main Liyue questline, Xiao came to the Traveler's rescue in their moment of peril. In Version 1.3 "All That Glitters," we invite Travelers once again to experience a story that provides a glimpse into Xiao's seldom-shown gentle nature, as well as the trust, hidden deep within his heart, that he places in you. (Developer Insight #4)
After the events of Xiao’s Story Quest, Lantern Rite approaches. Verr Goldet asks Lumine to persuade Xiao to come along for the festival. She sees that Lumine has grown familiar with him, so Goldet hopes she might be able to reach out to Xiao and convince him to give the festival a chance. Lantern Rite is dedicated to heroes like Xiao after all. He deserves to enjoy the festivities like everyone else.
Lumine is fine with the idea but expresses concern over Xiao’s mood, as the last time she saw him he was reminiscing over Tongque. She doesn’t wish to disturb his privacy.
Verr Goldet: We're not close, I wouldn't know how to ask him myself. But it seems that you've grown familiar...
Lumine: However, considering Xiao's current mood...
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Given that the Teyvat Food Notes’ contents are optional and only available in Chinese, Lantern Rite’s event story assumes most players are coming into it right after Xiao’s Story Quest. However, with the Teyvat Food Notes in mind, one could imagine that Xiao might have been thinking over the sweet dreams he used to devour, although at the time Lumine is not yet aware of that story.
In the days leading up to Lantern Rite, Lumine spends her time in Liyue Harbor helping people, running errands and learning about Liyue’s culture and traditions. Meanwhile, Xiao senses a malign influence in the Harbor and goes to investigate. Lumine spots him and approaches him.
He asks her to take responsibility for this potential threat, as it comes from the mortal world. Xiao does not wish to get involved with mortal matters out of fear of things getting out of his control, leading to him harming people. Xiao asks this of Lumine because she is now someone he can trust and rely on. On her part, Lumine is already very comfortable with Xiao to the point that she has a dialogue option in which she jokes lightly.
Xiao: When the time comes, I hope you shall act promptly and decisively...
Xiao: Because if I become involved, there is a possibility that the streets of Liyue Harbor will be painted red this Lantern Rite.
Lumine: Then it's up to me to avoid that...
Lumine: Actually, quite a festive color in this part of the world...
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
While in the process of helping Xiao deal with this mortal threat, Lumine makes a first attempt at inviting him to watch the lanterns together. Xiao, however, does not want to be in crowded places. This is partially because of his karma that would harm others and partially because he doesn’t believe he deserves a place among the joyful humans. He offers, with a hint of reluctance, Wangshu Inn as an alternative. The desire for company is hidden beneath his words.
Lumine: Wait!
Xiao: What is it?
Lumine: Next time we meet...
Xiao: Huh?
Lumine: Let's make it somewhere with a view of the Mingxiao Lantern.
Xiao: ...I am not partial to crowded areas. Especially at this time of the year.
Xiao: When this matter is resolved... come to Wangshu Inn.
Xiao: In previous years, the Mingxiao Lantern has been visible even from there.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Later, Lumine finds Xiao at Wangshu Inn and tries to invite him again to join the festival. When Lumine informs Xiao that the Mingxiao Lantern is Skybracer, he ponders over it a little. His curiosity is piqued and he wishes to see it, but he disregards the thought, insisting the lantern has no meaning to him. In the end, Xiao declines but Lumine notices his inner conflict.
Xiao: "Skybracer..."
Xiao: Huh, a Mingxiao Lantern nonetheless. A fleeting creation of human hand. It means nothing to me.
Xiao: If this short-lived spectacle is one you wish to witness, I suggest you go to the city.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Unable to do anything else, Lumine consults with the Wangshu Inn staff to find a solution. Lumine is not ready to give up on Xiao yet. After a short brainstorming session, they all begin setting up a mini-festival just for him — Almond Tofu and Grilled Tiger Fish included. Xiao is befuddled but also very curious so he follows Lumine.
Xiao: What now?
Lumine: We'd like you to come to Lantern Rite with us.
Xiao: ...I don't like crowded places. You can go enjoy it by yourself.
Lumine: I didn't say you have to go to Liyue Harbor.
Xiao: ...What do you mean?
Lumine: You wouldn't go to the festival, so we brought the festival to you.
Xiao: You "brought the festival to me"?
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Xiao: So this is what you meant by bringing the festival to me... *sigh* Is there no end to the peculiarities of human behavior?
Xiao: Does this serve any grander purpose?
Lumine: This way you can take part in Lantern Rite.
Lumine: Lantern Rite is meant to include everyone.
Xiao: ...Is that so? Human motives defy my attempts to fathom them.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Xiao is incapable of understanding why Lumine went out of her way to do something like this for someone like him. He declares it a peculiarity of human behaviour and gives up on trying to understand it, but deep down he is happy and appreciates Lumine’s kindness.
After the meal, Lumine invites Xiao to watch the lanterns together. He declines again. Xiao strongly believes that someone like him has no place among the happy festivities. Lumine then suggests he can at least accompany her on the way to Liyue Harbor. Together with Paimon she finds the convincing excuse of needing an escort because the road is long and danger may be lurking. Lumine has the option to jest, further displaying how comfortable she is in Xiao’s presence.
Xiao: You may take your leave. There's nothing for me over there.
Lumine: You might as well keep us company on the way there.
Lumine: O Vigilant Yaksha, please escort us safely to the city.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
It is an obvious lie and Lumine has already proven herself capable, but Xiao craves company and this excuse is just enough to fool himself into thinking it’s okay to accompany her.
Once they reach the outskirts, Xiao finds himself opening up to Lumine, a little more so than usual. He doesn’t say a lot and he stops himself from talking too much, but he nonetheless lets himself be vulnerable in her presence, even if only for a moment.
Xiao: I...don't like crowds.
Xiao: No cares in the world, so peaceful, so joyful... I am different from them.
Xiao: Too long have I spent slaughtering, accompanied by the burden of suffering that follows in its wake. Crossing paths with all those jubilant people will only make me...
Xiao: …Let’s end this topic here.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Lumine makes one final attempt at inviting Xiao to come with her which sadly ends in failure once again. Before she leaves, however, Xiao makes a promise. If Lumine is ever in danger, she can speak his name and he will come to help. Few people in the world have this privilege.
Xiao: But stay vigilant. Keep your eyes open for any menace. If you find yourself in trouble... speak my name.
Lumine: Sure you'd make it into the city in time to come to the rescue?
Xiao: Anywhere. Anytime.
Xiao: Whether yours or Liyue's, I hear all cries for help, all prayers for peace, and all the wishes carried by the lanterns.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Later on, Xiao is seen watching the Xiao Lanterns rise to the sky. The sight is truly beautiful and it brings a rare and precious smile to his face. Moreover, Xiao appears to have come closer to Liyue Harbor, which means that Lumine not only succeeded in encouraging him to watch the lanterns and enjoy the festival in his own way, but she has also helped him take a step closer to humanity.
In the old traditional Chinese society, women were to stay inside the family compound with the only exception being occasional shopping trips or visits to temples. The days around the Lantern Festival were another exception during which girls and young women were allowed out at night to watch the lantern displays and other attractions.
Women were usually accompanied by older women or by female servants, all dressed in their best clothes. Young men would gather in small groups to watch the beautiful young ladies. It was an exciting experience and it is believed there were many cases of love at first sight at that time.
Thereafter matchmakers got very busy as in that era it was not proper to have direct marriage negotiations. Even so, there are a number of poems which describe lovers meeting by themselves during this festival night.
The bright lights on the tall trees fuse with the glowing moon in illumination
Sounds of drum beats fill the air, trumpets blow in competition with the spring breeze
Holding the hands of my new lover, all depressing thoughts vanish
Remembering the past brings anxiety which my many dreams recall
With this new person now, can I ever forget my past love?
Without placing any obstacles we allow the moon to help clear out this ambiguity
While other poems tell of the longing and waiting of a lonely person at the Lantern Festival hoping to find or meet their lover.
Last year’s Lantern Festival, the bright lanterns in the flower market seemed like daylight
The moon moving down to the tips of the willow branches with lovers meeting ‘til dawn
This year on the night of the festival, the moon and lanterns all seemed to remain the same
Yet I fail to see the person whom I had met last year
With disappointment, I wipe the tears with the sleeves of my new spring dress.
The atmosphere of the Lantern Festival with the bright full moon overhead, the music, the freedom and the excitement in the air was considered to be very romantic for young lovers. Xiao and Lumine, too, spend time alone during Lantern Rite, standing at the edge of a cliff outside Liyue Harbor under the moon’s glow. And they have many more private moments together in subsequent Lantern Rite events.
Some time during Lantern Rite Lumine and Xiangling prepare the well-known “Adeptus’ Temptation” together. In order to make the best dish possible, they receive help from many of their friends in the form of advice, assistance or feedback.
Xiao is, of course, one of them. Normally Xiao only ever enters Liyue Harbor if his duty demands it, as seen during the Lantern Rite event, but here he overcomes his fear of entering the city for Lumine’s sake. She had been looking for him so he wanted to assist her, and he also wished to repay her kindness from last time.
Xiao: Lumine.
Lumine: (I turned around, and Xiao was standing in a less crowded corner, calling out to me.)
Xiao: A few days ago, you were looking for me at Wangshu Inn.
Lumine: (Yeah, I remember. I wanted Xiao to experience the atmosphere of the Lantern Rite together and share the delicious food in Liyue Harbor.)
Xiao: ...Hmm.
Xiao: To repay for the Almond Tofu last time…
Lumine: (I assured Xiao not to worry about that and suggested that he try the Adeptus’ Temptation, a dish we all worked on together.)
(Teyvat Food Notes)
Lumine doesn’t need him to repay her for anything. Instead, she hopes that Xiao can enjoy the Lantern Rite in some way. Surprisingly, he accepts her suggestion to try the dish. Perhaps it’s because he watched her cooking process in the past or maybe it’s the trust he is beginning to place in her. Whatever the case may be, he is willing to try new things for her. Lumine is perceptive of Xiao’s discomfort, however, so she accommodates him. Feeling guilty over it, Xiao apologizes to her.
Lumine: (Xiao stood motionless in his place. Understanding his silence, I filled a bowl to the brim and brought it over to the corner where Xiao was.)
Xiao: Sorry, I didn't want to be in a place like that.
(Teyvat Food Notes)
After Xiao tries a bowl, Lumine asks if he can share his thoughts with her. She is curious what an Adeptus would have to say about such an interesting dish called Adeptus’ Temptation. Despite hesitating a little at first, or maybe because he needs time to collect his thoughts, Xiao shares his honest opinion.
Xiao: ...
Xiao: The pork ribs are tender and succulent, melting in the mouth, reminiscent of the fox cries atop Guyun Stone Forest.
Lumine: (Sure enough, Xiao can compose poetry, but it carries his unique touch.)
Xiao: The pig stomach is soft and mellow, simple and rich, much like the flute sounds along the ancient road.
Xiao: The duck kidneys are tender and elastic, with a refined balance, as if sitting idly in a pavilion.
Xiao: The beef tendons are soft, sticky, and golden, resembling the solitary rocks standing in the Hulao Mountain.
Lumine: (Accompanied by a subtle sense of loneliness.)
(Teyvat Food Notes)
Lumine realizes that Xiao has a talent for poetry, but also recognizes the sense of loneliness found in his words.
Lumine has helped a lot of people in Liyue, and during Lantern Rite many of them sent her little gift boxes to show their gratitude and offer their seasonal wishes. Xiao, too, is among the people who sent her a gift. It’s a strange, ink-black box adorned with a leaf, possibly a wútóng or a ginkgo leaf.
It’s not clear when this happens exactly; whether this is a gift to thank her for preparing a personal festival for him, or for her help and kindness at an earlier time. Either way, Xiao makes an attempt to offer her a humble gift and expresses his gladness that she enjoys the festivities.
For some reason, this year's Lantern Rite seems rowdier than ever... Well, as long as you enjoy it.
(Wish Upon a Lantern)
Profile Voice-Overs fall under the category of semi-canon. Xiao does not actually travel with Lumine, but in a hypothetical scenario of them traveling together, these are some of the things he would say to her. Voice-Overs that don’t fit under this category could be considered as miscellaneous discussions they had together at different times.
The very first thing Xiao tells Lumine is an oath to always answer her call. No matter what sort of trouble she encounters, she may call his name and he will come to her aid.
Xiao: If you encounter the trouble of losing your direction in the wilderness, the trouble of meeting thieves, the trouble of swordsmen of water and fire, the trouble of spirits and poison, the trouble of evil beasts and poisonous insects, the trouble of malicious enemies, then call my name. “Adeptus Xiao", here by your command.
(Profile Voice-Over)
And, just as he promises, he joins Lumine whenever he summons him to her party.
Xiao: Here by your command.
(Profile Voice-Over)
He continues to worry about her safety and often offers advice or expresses his desire to protect her.
Xiao: Night is when sinister creatures are most likely to cause disturbances. You best not go outside. Go, I will be waiting for you here.
Xiao: I will be your guardian. But... don't get close to me and stay out of my way, or all that awaits you is regret.
(Profile Voice-Over)
Xiao warns Lumine to keep her distance because he is afraid the karma he carries will hurt her. Moreover, due to the negative opinion he has of himself, he tells her to see him as a weapon, a simple tool, and nothing more. However this also stems from a caring heart. Being of service to someone is the only thing he knows to do, so this is what he offers to her.
Xiao: Through these thousands of years, I have killed tens of thousands of resenting spirits. If you don't want trouble to arise, stay away from me. See me as just a tool.
Xiao: I deal in death. If you cannot bring yourself to kill — speak my name.
(Profile Voice-Over)
Despite his fears over karma, Xiao begins to entertain the idea of spending time with Lumine or accompanying her to various places, although he is not always honest with his feelings about it.
Xiao: Your courage is in no short supply, daring to ask me about my hobbies.
Then, let's fight. How many blows will you be able to withstand?
Xiao: The Lantern Rite? Hmph, so it is once again the time where mortals bestrew Liyue Harbor with their glowing trash… How childish... But if you're bored, I can accompany you there.
(Profile Voice-Over)
Xiao continues to warn her against corruption, but he also expresses his trust and belief in Lumine’s ability to withstand the darkness.
Xiao: Do not become corrupted, I will not have mercy.
...What I'm saying is, if it is "you," then "you" should be able to stay firm.
(Profile Voice-Over)
Initially, Xiao is not completely comfortable in her presence, particularly when it comes to showing any sort of weakness or vulnerability.
Xiao: ...Who's there!? ...You think I had fallen asleep standing? You have no respect for the ways of the Adepti!
Xiao: Troubles? Heh... this question is meaningless to the Adepti, there are no troubles that can endure through a thousand years.
Xiao: "Vision", desires? Hah... do not use mortal standards to consider Adepti, I do not have desires.
(Profile Voice-Over)
But he gradually harbors a desire to talk with her as their bond grows, though he remains reticent.
Xiao: Liyue is changing. Rapidly... Forget it, it means nothing to me.
Xiao: Dihua Islet was once deserted. Though that was many decades... no, centuries ago…
(Profile Voice-Over)
With time, Xiao begins to open up to Lumine, admitting things and sharing with her more intimate thoughts.
Xiao: Hiding? I'm hiding nothing. I just won't speak of desire to others.
Do mortals not have a rule about spoken wishes never coming true? Hm? What do you mean that's not the same?
Xiao: "Their" voices... are often present by my ear. Roars, cries... shrieks about slaughter… This is my choice and my retribution. It has nothing to do with you.
(Profile Voice-Over)
Before long, their bond grows and Xiao becomes attached to Lumine, while she herself wishes to help him or even save him from his grim circumstances.
Xiao: It's too late. The connection between us is too strong. Even if you wanted to, it's too late to sever it. Hm? You've never thought to sever it?... *sigh* This eternal dance of demon subjugation... my battles won't stop. However, when it comes to you, I want to know more.
Xiao: You want to... get Baizhu to create medicine that will relieve my suffering? Heh... I appreciate your good intentions, but mortal medicine is incapable of affecting Adepti.
Xiao: My polearm has already slaughtered an endless amount of restless souls. Even I myself have inevitably been engulfed by darkness. Yet you dare urge on even this form of me, treating me as... a "companion." ...Do you wish to save me? ...You… really are an incomprehensible being. (Profile Voice-Over)
Finally, Xiao gives Lumine a gift for her birthday. He initially dismisses this tradition, but upon seeing that it is something Lumine cares about, he quickly and awkwardly thinks of a present to give her. And as expected it is something that he hopes could help and protect her.
The date of your birth... These types of human commemorations are redundant. Ahem... wait. I have a butterfly folded from wútóng leaves for you. Alright, take it. This is Adeptal magic and can ward off evil spirits. (Profile Voice-Over)
Butterflies hold significant symbolism in Chinese culture and are often associated with love and romance. More specifically, they can symbolize the undying bond between lovers. Butterflies are sometimes believed to be the embodiment of the souls of departed lovers; the idea being that love between a couple is so strong that it transcends death. Men are also known to use the butterfly symbol to sign their love letters, and to express their love and passion.
This symbolism likely originates from the Chinese legend of 梁祝 (Liang Zhu) who are known as The Butterfly Lovers. The legend is centered around the tragic romance between Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, whose names form the Chinese title of the story.
Liang was a young scholar, and Zhu was a woman who disguised herself as a man to attend the school. The two became close friends during their studies which later transformed into romantic love. However societal norms and Zhu’s disguise prevented her from expressing her true feelings. The story takes a tragic turn when Liang falls ill. Zhu rushed to visit him, revealing her true identity, but unfortunately Liang passed away. Zhu attempted to bring him back to life resulting in supernatural events, such as a storm and the appearance of a pair of butterflies. The butterflies are believed to represent the spirits of Liang and Zhu, symbolizing eternal love and the enduring power of true emotions.
The butterfly talisman Xiao gifts to Lumine is made with 梧桐 (wútóng) tree leaves. In English it is known as the Chinese parasol tree (Firmiana simplex). The wútóng tree holds profound cultural, poetic, and mythological significance in Chinese tradition.
This tree is often associated with refinement, grace, and scholarly virtue. In classical Chinese mythology, the 鳳凰 (fènghuáng, phoenix), a sacred and auspicious bird, is said to only perch upon the wútóng tree. This symbolizes purity attracting the divine: a person of true virtue and nobility will naturally attract greatness. Finally, it embodies harmony between heaven and earth, being a tree that welcomes the fènghuáng — the harbinger of peace.
Although Xiao is a 鵬 (péng) and not a fènghuáng specifically, there is still an association to be made. In antiquity the 鵬 (péng) was a variant Chinese character for the 鳳 (fèng) in 鳳凰 (fènghuáng).
The wútóng was also said to be a tree beneath which the 仙 (Xiān), the Daoist immortals, would sometimes meditate. The Adepti and Xiao’s character concept are also based on Daoist immortals. The leaves and wood of the wútóng tree could be used for the making of ritual or protective talismans.
In classical poetry, particularly during the Tang and Song Dynasties, the wútóng tree often evoked a mood of longing, sorrow, or separation, especially in romance. The sound of rain dripping on wútóng leaves became a symbol of lonely nights. Poets would use the wútóng tree to conjure images of empty chambers, absent lovers or autumnal partings.
The wútóng also stands for devotion. The fènghuáng is often used to represent one half of a couple, especially the woman, with the dragon as her counterpart. Thus, the wútóng tree became a symbolic meeting place or resting place for lovers. Over time, the idea that only a true fènghuáng will land on the true wútóng became a poetic metaphor for fated love, loyalty and devoted couples. The imagery of the empty wútóng waiting for a fènghuáng often signified longing or enduring love through separation.
The 3D model of the golden tree that towers over the Wangshu Inn appears to be a wútóng whose real world cultural significance matches very well with Xiao’s in-game lore and the romantic subtext he has with Lumine. So, presumably, Xiao crafted the butterfly charm with leaves from this tree.
However, the leaf particles that float around the inn are in the shape of ginkgo leaves, even though wútóng leaf particles exist and are seen in other places. It could be an honest error. Yet official art and miHoYo-commissioned art depicting the Wangshu Inn often shows the tree being a ginkgo. As such, is it unclear what this tree is truly meant to be.
Perhaps it was originally intended to be a wútóng tree to match Xiao’s lore, as the inn is his dwelling and base of operations, and later the developers decided to change it for a ginkgo, which is much more famous globally than a wútóng tree, but the 3D model was not updated. Gingko is also heavily associated with Liyue as a whole, often being used as one of the nation’s signature symbols.
Much like the wútóng tree, the 銀杏, yínxìng, known as ginkgo in the west (Ginkgo biloba), also holds profound cultural significance in Chinese tradition. So whether Wangshu Inn’s tree is a wútóng or a ginkgo, both can fit well.
The ginkgo tree is a long-lived, disease-resistant tree that has survived extreme events. Some trees have lived for as much as 1,400 years, and some are claimed to be even older.. This has made the ginkgo a powerful symbol of endurance, vitality, longevity, resilience and timelessness. Its status as a “living fossil” dating back over 200 million years adds a mystical aura of immortality.
In Buddhist monasteries, ginkgos were planted to represent spiritual purity and enlightenment, while in Daoist lore the ginkgo is thought to connect heaven and earth, often planted near temples as a conduit of spiritual energy.
While the ginkgo is not as famous in romantic poetry as the wútóng tree, the ginkgo’s leaves could be seen as tokens of long-lasting, enduring love. The split leaf, which looks like two halves joined together, may symbolize a pair of lovers and kindred spirits.
Spring comes and Xiao’s birthday arrives. Xiao’s birthday mail reveals that he might be spending his free time thinking about Lumine, and he sends her a gift to decorate her hair.
Lumine has never actually worn butterflies in her hair nor has she indicated having a liking to them in general. Xiao is the one who seems to like butterflies, as seen from the shape he chose to fold his talisman into, and the one who thinks butterflies would look good in Lumine’s hair.
In his message, Xiao expresses that he does not much care about birthdays and celebrations. What is more important to him is being able to spend time with Lumine.
There was nothing for me to do today. So, I decided I would find a Crystalfly for you — to put in your hair. I thought that... it would look nice. The next thing I knew, I had caught several more than I intended. I hope you do not mind.
If you wish to meet me, speak my name. ...I do not care much for birthdays and celebrations, and I do not wish to be around large groups of people. To be able to spend time with you is enough.
(Xiao Birthday Mail 2021)
Presumably upon receiving Xiao’s letter, Lumine visits him at Wangshu Inn and prepares a small surprise for him with some help from Verr Goldet.
Paimon: Almond Tofu and Grilled Tiger Fish... Do you think Xiao will like our surprise?
Lumine: Shh, not so loud, Paimon! Also, you're drooling onto the table!
(Xiao Birthday Shorts 2021)
Later, Lumine and Xiao go on a leisurely trip together, possibly at the Huaguang Stone Forest. Instead of quickly scaling the mountains using his unique abilities, Xiao chooses to instead make the long trip on foot the same way humans do. This is something he rarely does or it could well be something he has never done before. Xiao wishes to spend more time with Lumine and to create memories together so it’s best to take the long way.
A vantage point to view the scenery together... This is the location you've chosen? The swirling sea of clouds will make for a beautiful sight to admire with you. You have my thanks. Why don't I use my Adeptus Art to swiftly scale the mountain? I think that the trip with you may create more memories.
(Xiao Birthday Post 2021)
Lumine visits Xiao for his birthday and realizes that, in the end, she doesn’t know that much about him which makes it difficult to think of a gift for him. She doesn’t give up, however. Lumine is committed to give Xiao something new, unique and different from what everyone might think of — which is basically just Almond Tofu. Luckily, she knows just the perfect recipe.
Upon careful consideration, I realized that my understanding of Xiao is not as deep as I imagined. When the topic of birthday gifts came up, besides Almond Tofu, there was surprisingly nothing else in my mind...
Although continuing to treat Xiao to Almond Tofu is still an option, there is a stubbornness in my heart, preventing me from continuing to give the same...
I don't want to offer the usual, nor do I want to be like others, giving Xiao the same gift. I remembered the "Mint Jelly" I tasted during the Windblume Festival in Mondstadt, which, in terms of taste and appearance, strangely complemented Almond Tofu… So, I've decided. This will be Xiao's birthday gift.
(Teyvat Food notes)
When she meets Xiao, he gives her the Crystaflies he caught for her. Lumine doesn’t think they suit her but she chooses to wear them to make Xiao happy. Then the two of them go out together and during this time Lumine collects fresh ingredients for her upcoming dish.
Upon meeting Xiao, he handed me the Crystalflies he caught... What should I do? Personally, I feel that I'm not suited to wearing butterflies on my head. However, in Xiao's silence, I seem to sense his expectations... Well, it's his birthday.
We wandered aimlessly in Liyue – well, at least Xiao thought it was aimless. Along the way, I actually collected quite a few necessary ingredients, luckily not requiring much.
(Teyvat Food notes)
They return to Wangshu Inn in the afternoon. Lumine makes some tea for Xiao and then she gets to work. Maybe it’s because he felt guilty having her do all the work or maybe it’s because he wanted to spend more time with her, whichever the case might be, Xiao decides to help. Despite being one to dislike the humans’ cooking, he is willing to participate in the activity for Lumine’s sake.
Lumine: (In the afternoon, we arrived at the Wangshu Inn. I suggested taking a rest inside, and I could make afternoon tea for Xiao. If it were any other place, Xiao probably wouldn't stay. But at Wangshu Inn, Xiao is a regular customer.)
Lumine: (I borrowed the kitchen and started preparing.)
Xiao: Waiting outside alone is too boring. If there's anything I can help with, just let me know.
Lumine: (This dish is quite simple, so I invited Xiao to join me.)
(Teyvat Food notes)
Xiao is very careful and attentively follows Lumine’s instructions, while she uses this opportunity to learn more about the things Xiao likes — at least in terms of food preferences.
Xiao was very careful in the preparation. I asked him about the texture he likes, and if he wants a firmer jelly, he can increase the ratio of agar powder.
(Teyvat Food notes)
Soon the Mint Jelly is complete. Xiao is not sure what to think of it at first. It looks very different from the familiar dish he knows.
Lumine: The Mint jelly is complete!
Xiao: This, compared to Almond Tofu, looks more like a Slime...
Lumine: Slime...?
Lumine: That's a good suggestion!
Xiao: Changing the color to make various Slime shapes...?
Xiao: Is that even edible?
(Teyvat Food notes)
Lumine is inspired by Xiao’s comment to make Mint Jelly in the form of Slimes. Xiao hesitates at first but ultimately gives in and follows along.
I hummed a tune and started “producing Slimes.”
Xiao originally didn't want to participate, but under my "coercion and enticements," he picked up the appropriately colored drinks and made a few as well. (Teyvat Food notes)
All of the “Slimes” are soon ready, each one with a unique look resembling the real Slimes found in the wild, but made with edible ingredients. Initially, Xiao seems to be dissatisfied and thinks of ordering Almond Tofu. Lumine tries to convince him these dishes taste good and is saddened when it looks like her idea of a gift has failed.
Lumine: (After finishing all of them, we arranged them on the plate.)
Xiao: They don't look edible.
Xiao: I think I'll go order some Almond Tofu.
Lumine: (I grabbed Xiao and explained that the taste of this is actually good, and the texture should be similar to Almond Tofu.
Lumine: (Most importantly, for Xiao's birthday, I wanted to make something different as a gift…)
(Teyvat Food notes)
But it turns out that Xiao wished to keep the dishes they made together, likely as a memento of the special time spent with Lumine. Unfortunately for him, food cannot be stored forever. This also shows the trust he places in Lumine’s cooking and her judgement in choosing food he can tolerate.
Lumine: (Xiao stopped.)
Xiao: I'm not worried about the taste of the dishes you make. I just want to collect them.
Lumine: Dishes are not meant for collecting! They will spoil!
(Teyvat Food notes)
In the end, Lumine’s gift is a success and Xiao shares a few more of his private thoughts with her. He truly cherishes the time he has spent with Lumine.
Lumine: (Xiao finally agreed to sit down and began tasting these “Slimes.”)
Lumine: (They were quite elastic and refreshing, with a feeling of wind brushing across the palate.)
Xiao: Different from Almond Tofu, but still good.
Xiao: Actually...
Xiao: I like Almond Tofu not just because of the taste.
Xiao: But because it reminds me of some memories.
Lumine: (I looked at Xiao, but Xiao didn't look at me.)
Xiao: The jelly we made today is also a special memory, thank you.
(Teyvat Food notes)
In the Genshin Impact x Sweets Paradise Collab Cafe artwork, Lumine is seen wearing the Crystaflies she received from Xiao on his birthday.
It is not known where the Serenitea Pot dialogue fits on the timeline exactly, but it can be assumed different conversations happen at different times as Xiao and Lumine’s bond grows through Friendship Levels.
When Lumine approaches him, Xiao’s first instinct is to assume something happened and his assistance may be required. This may also further show how much he cares for her; he is ready to assist Lumine in any way she needs.
Xiao: ...It's you, Lumine.
Xiao: Did something happen?
(Teapot Lines)
Lumine invites Xiao to the Realm Within, her private space inside the Serenitea Pot. She values his opinion so she asks him to share his thoughts. Xiao is not used to such quiet and peaceful places, but regardless of his own opinions, he declares that he will protect Lumine’s haven and he thanks her for her kindness.
Lumine: How do you like it here?
Xiao: ...
Xiao: There are no ominous things here. It's a quiet place.
Xiao: But...
Lumine: But?
Xiao: It's too comfortable.
Lumine: Not used to it?
Xiao: ...Yes.
Xiao: I will protect this haven. For your sake.
Xiao: I know that I can never have a peaceful and carefree life.
Xiao: ...Still, your kindness is accepted.
(Teapot Lines)
When Lumine greets him in the morning, Xiao expresses his worry and wants to make sure Lumine is safe, thus he reminds her to call his name whenever she encounters any trouble.
Lumine: Good morning, Xiao.
Xiao: ...Morning.
Xiao: If you encounter a difficult situation, don't be stubborn. Call my name. I will make it right.
(Teapot Lines)
Unfortunately, even though he wishes for Lumine to rely on him, Xiao himself still feels like a burden around her sometimes so he keeps his thoughts to himself.
Lumine: Good night, Xiao.
Xiao: Today...
Xiao: Forget it, it's nothing. Good night.
(Teapot Lines)
So much so that he can’t even bring himself to be honest about his own desires, when he awkwardly brings up his favourite dish.
Xiao: The kitchen here is furnished just like Wangshu Inn's.
Xiao: Looking at the ingredients here... could you recreate that dish I'm familiar with? I assume you know the one...
Xiao: ...It's just an idle thought... I'm not expecting anything.
(Teapot Lines)
Lumine gives Xiao the opportunity to observe human settlements from up close, something that he cannot do under normal circumstances due to his fear of harming others.
Xiao: Short and squat wooden houses, sparsely scattered... Sometimes, a village like this can be easier to guard than a city.
Xiao: When hunting demons, I just want bystanders out of the area, so I can focus on fighting.
Xiao: ...So this is what human construction looks like up close.
(Teapot Lines)
When Xiao becomes more comfortable with Lumine, she hopes to spend more time with him and simply chat together. Xiao is surprised by this request, not seeing himself as someone people would want to talk to. He is also somewhat anxious when it comes to socializing with others because he has spent too long in isolation. However he is willing to make an effort for Lumine’s sake.
Lumine: Want to chat?
Xiao: ...Idle chatter?
Xiao: ...If you wish, I'll accompany you.
Lumine: I thought you'd refuse.
Xiao: Hm?
Xiao: To make a request but prepare yourself for rejection...
Xiao: Human interaction really is troublesome.
Lumine: You seem a bit reluctant..
Xiao: That's not it.
Xiao: I didn't expect you to make such a request.
Xiao: Generally, I don't partake in activities like "chatting."
Xiao: But if it's with you... I'll try.
(Teapot Lines)
Naturally, the first thing Lumine asks is how Xiao fares because she too worries about him. And it is here that Xiao reveals that his karma has been easier to bear after meeting her. This is likely because he is happy to spend time with her and he no longer lives in near complete solitude. And even when Lumine is away, he thinks of her often.
Lumine: How have you been?
Xiao: Are you asking about the effects of my karmic debt?
Xiao: ...No issues.
Xiao: It is of my own doing, so I alone will bear the consequences.
Xiao: ...I don't know if it's related to you, but recently, the pain from my karmic debt has been less excruciating.
Xiao: It's much easier to bear than before.
Xiao: As for any excess concerns... Best to leave that for yourself.
(Teapot Lines)
Moreover, there is a possibility that Lumine’s purifying powers are capable of subduing Xiao’s karmic effects. Though as she has yet to recover her full powers, Lumine is too weak to purify him, if that possibility exists.
As their bond grows, Xiao makes an unexpected offer: to go to Liyue Harbor together. His desire to understand Lumine is so strong that he overcomes his long-standing fears of entering the city. He will do anything for her, no matter what he needs to go through.
Lumine: Is there anything you'd like to do?
Xiao: If you have free time, we can go to Liyue Harbor together...
Xiao: If not... never mind.
Lumine: Of course we can.
Xiao: Uh... alright.
Lumine: Finally decided to integrate into city life?
Xiao: Ahem...
Xiao: I have no intention of getting close to the lives of mortals.
Xiao: But I know that you often enter and leave the city, walking amidst the crowd.
Xiao: The stories of these times, or their joys... If I don't experience such things myself, it'll be hard to understand your thoughts.
Lumine: So... you're doing this for me?
Xiao: Yes, to understand you.
Xiao: I had a feeling that it would be difficult, but after having such thoughts, I can't simply sit back and do nothing.
Xiao: I will control myself while I am in the city.
Xiao: I'll try to speak... as little as possible.
Lumine: I'll be with you.
Lumine: You can say whatever you want. I'll bail you out.
Xiao: Hmm...
Xiao: Let me know when you're ready to go.
(Teapot Lines)
Lumine is very understanding and she reassures him that she will be by his side and help him out of any uncomfortable social situation.
