Writing and studies of Chinese history
I am currently writing a biographical history of Modern China, covering people and events in 1860–2001. The ongoing program uses ancient Chinese prose, follows and advances the style and techniques of traditional biographical history starting from Shi Ji.
My independent history studies are focused on intellectuals and education in early Modern China. See my co-authored book studying the Chinese philosopher Taiyan Zhang (章太炎), and translated book about the educator Boling Zhang (張伯苓) and his Nankai schools.

Philosophical understanding of art and poetry
In addition to science, art and poetry unfold the truth in their own ways. There seem to be some unexplainable parts in the work of art and poetry, especially in traditional Chinese works, I do believe that they can be clearly explained. I try to provide epistemology for some of my most familiar arts, including traditional Chinese calligraphy, comic performance, and traditional Chinese poetry. Findings of the reseach will contribute to better understanding of more comprehensive art phenomena.
