Apple has supported 64-bit systems well before they released macOS Catalina. In addition, they informed developers back in 2019, that Catalina will be the last macOS version that can fully support legacy 32-bit apps and system extensions. Obviously, those same developers can decide whether to upgrade their apps/extensions ... or not.

You are certainly correct that Macs are not gaming machines ... at least, not anything par to Windows-based rigs or consoles. At best, they do fairly well with casual gaming. Even the Mac Pros are not designed around gaming. Apple historically, seems to aim their devices to either meet general user (web browsing, document prep, etc.) needs, or to those more seriously in the fields of audio/video production.

You can in principle install software to run 32-bit software in a virtual machine, e.g. you can use VirtualBox, Parallels, VMware, there are probably others. It might not be super fast but I have used Parallels and performance seemed fine. It is indicated that they support 32-bit float. But whether this is the case is a question. I plan to use it with Zoom UAC 232 (I'm thinking about buying it) in the field. But there are still doubts. I am also considering the recorder, but for now I want to understand the question about 32 bits and ipados/ios.

The just about the only advantage of the NT1 5th Gen for me would be that I would not have to worry about setting the gain and could only focus on placing the mic in the desired location and hit record.

(With that said I am considering getting one just to get comfortable with using 32-bit float recording technology).

I am aware of that support for the field app requires iOS 11 or later, but it is not clear from the online documentation that iOS 11 is required for browser based forms. Safari is listed as a supported browser, but no minimum is listed. The only guideline is that the latest version of the browser is recommended.

I've been using Neon a lot lately to edit all our field recordings, I feel it has everything we need to do the job.

Does anyone else here do field recording in a serious way, and what do you use for editing, I'd really like to know.


Ideally Neon should be able to record in 32-bit float when used as an effect in AUM as it's way too easy to un-intentionally clip the recording (try to record a HOT signal from say Model D with Neon in mono mode it will clip as it caps at 16-bit).
