Xenu, or Xenu's Link Sleuth, is a computer program that checks websites for broken hyperlinks.[1] It is written by Tilman Hausherr and is proprietary software available at no charge. The program is named after Xenu, the galactic ruler from Scientology scripture.

Link Sleuth runs on Microsoft Windows. Link verification is performed on links which appear in tags, as well as images, frames, plug-ins, backgrounds, local image maps, style sheets, scripts, and Java applets. The program follows links to other pages, and checks the links on those pages also, so it is possible to check an entire site for broken links in one session. Xenu displays a continuously updated list of URLs which can be sorted according to different criteria.[2] The program uses a "simple, no-frills user-interface",[3] and can help users understand how certain Web sites are structured.[4] The program has support for SSL Web sites.[5]

There are literally a bazillion SEO tools on the internet (literally!), this post discusses just one such tool; Xenu's Link Sleuth. Many people in the SEO industry are already aware of this tool but many people I've spoken to only treat the tool as a broken link finder. It's so much more than that.

This post is aimed at those who haven't heard of it before and those who do use it regularly - there are lots of nifty features that solve all kinds of SEO-problems and hopefully beginners and advanced alike will learn something from this post.

What is Xenu?

Xenu's Link Sleuth is a FREE download (everyone loves free) that runs on all versions of Windows (but not quite on Macs unfortunately). It's a lightweight download and I've never had issues with it crashing or hanging. In a nutshell it's a site crawler and once you point it at a URL it will crawl around the site and spit out a report at the end. It's main focus and branding is all about finding broken links on your site (so where you link internally to a 404 error) but I've found that I use it to solve a whole host of different SEO-related issues which I will explain below.

Problem - How do I find broken links on my site?

This is the most basic use of Xenu in my opinion, but also the most common use. Simply point the program at the homepage of your site, check 'skip external' to avoid it crawling the entire web, and set it going!

You can see that there is a handy section which reports any broken links that it finds, though in this case I've chosen a rather poor example since there are no broken links on the homepage of Distilled :-)

Problem - How do I get a crawl of my site into microsoft Excel?

The only enterprise-grade solution I found so far is IBM Rational Policy tester. It does a whole lot more than simply checking broken links, but it does it well (spell check, grammar, reg ex, SEO, 508 accessibility, ...). The configuration of the tool is a pain and the UI is incredibly dated too... Checking for broken links using WordPress plugins can lead to intensive use of server resources and impact site performance. Plugins like Broken Link Checker are restricted on certain webhosts because of the performance issues they can introduce to a site. Thankfully, there are free programs available that off-load the process of checking links from the web server to a local machine. Xenu Link Sleuth is one such program. Released in 2010, Xenu Link Sleuth is compatible with Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista/7.

When I generated a report for WPTavern.com, Xenu used between 29-30 threads and checked over 10,000 urls. Green colored text signals no errors while red indicates a problem. In my case, it usually meant the image was not found. Since a report can be made up of thousands of links, Xenu Link Sleuth provides the ability to only view broken ones.

By using Xenu Link Sleuth, I was able to see hundreds of broken links of the thousands that make up the WPTavern archive. I feel conflicted on whether I should fix them or not. Links breaking are part of the natural life cycle of the web. Part of me wants to make sure each link that exists on the domain works correctly. The other part feels that by changing the URL, I would be altering history. Should I only concern myself with links up to a certain time period? How often do you check for broken links on your site? One of the best ways to prevent a broken link on your website is to use a dependency tag for all your links going to other pages within the CMS. We periodically conduct a scan to turn URLs linking to other CMS pages into Dependency Tags but it's up to the site editor to use them when available. If you don't have access to a site within the CMS and still want to link to a page within that site, you can toggle your link dialog box to PRODUCTION and be able to link to any published page within the CMS.

Site editors can easily identify broken links on their page before publishing by using the Page Check function while it is checked out for editing. This feature will identify hyperlinks on staging and production that are not working properly so you can return to the editor and correct them.
