From Grassroots to La Liga: Mapping an Indian Player’s Journey

For an aspiring Indian footballer, taking the leap from local playing fields to a European competition seems to be becoming less of a fantasy and more of a challenging, step-by-step reality. Today, that progression takes the form of organised footballing activities, coaching at accredited academies, competitive youth leagues, identifying the right scouts, player development and advanced coaching; culminating eventually into international stints.

This structured approach to football is increasingly being adopted across India. Initiatives by the AIFF's Blue Cubs programme aimed at building the grassroots talent, along with its scheme to accredit academies and conduct youth leagues, is gradually narrowing the gap between local football and the professional sphere.

An ambitious young Indian footballer, with dreams of reaching Spain and perhaps even making a name in La Liga, must learn and understand the route, and seek the appropriate guidance at each step just as much as develop their talent.

1. Where it all began: The grounds of grassroots football

Football, as a career begins where the first match is played.

For most Indian players, this experience could be at school, within the community, at a local training academy, or in fact, on any local field. While at this point of development, winning tournaments might seem to be the primary goal, this should be focused more on the development of basic footballing skills, coordinating abilities, developing an understanding of the game, and fostering creativity with as little interference on raw talent, and most of all, just getting comfortable with playing the sport. AIFF regards grassroots football as the foundation and with the AIFF Blue Cubs programme as their priority area of grassroots development, aimed at ages 4-12, they are developing a clear stepping-stone for players into the more advanced world of football.

2. Finding the ideal academy for your child

Moving from casual football to structured training environments represents the next crucial stage of any player's progression.

A high-quality academy must offer experienced, qualified coaching along with appropriate age-based training, opportunities to play competitive matches, a method to asses and evaluate player progression, and a defined plan for developing the player toward the next levels of football. The AIFF Academy Accreditation process evaluates coaching expertise, training plans, training facilities, competitive play structure, talent detection methods and of course player progression, thereby making academies the bridge between grassroots and professional football. Therefore for any parents and young aspiring players, choosing an academy is one of the most critical career decisions in the sport.

The relevant questions are not "which academy produces the best results?"

or "which academy is most well-known?" but rather "what academy has a solid program for player development?".

3. Performance is developed through practice: Where training gets real

Simply focusing solely on training does not contribute towards developing an outstanding footballer.

Young players need constant match experience against skilled peers of at least equal, if not higher, ability. State level leagues, various academy leagues and competitions, the AIFF Youth Leagues, School level competitions, along with National level tournaments all serve to prepare a player for playing under pressure. Indian youth development follows a steadily structuring approach. This year the AIFF had incorporated a qualifier round that would help a team accredited as a one-star academy go on to compete within the Youth Leagues thereby increasing chances for one-star accredited players to develop further.

The idea is very simple: Train, compete, assess, repeat.

4. Talent identification through scouting

No talented young Indian footballer can progress unless the appropriate people observe their talent.

The identification of this talent can be through various academy matches, state teams, academy leagues, official tourneys, through selection trials, or, increasingly through, the use of video and data analysis. Long-term development plan in Indian football highlights the use of more data based scouting and an established system for the identification of talent from district level matches up to Elite levels. At this level, coaching staff and scouts are looking for much more than goals and assists; an emphasis is laid on the player's technical ability, decision-making processes on the field, development of a higher level of athletic capability and tactcal understanding, followed withconsistency and further potential of player development.

5. The progression through National and Professional Football

For young Indian players showing immense potential, this could be training with state level teams, National youth camps, working under professional academy setups and ultimately progressing to senior football. Initiatives shown in the AIFF in recent years highlight a new trend where Grassroots football development is being integrated with elite professional levels of play. For example, the AIFF FIFA Talent Development Scheme focuses on nation-wide identification of talents, development of a standardized assessment and coaching program, monitoring of talented player's growth and provide overall all-round support to player's career development. This shows clearly that the path is not always a straight line, from local academy to state teams, from professional academy to youth camps to overseas opportunities, every level of a player's career holds a lesson and a growth opportunity.

6. The big move to Europe and especially to Spain

Making the switch to professional footballing levels in Europe represents the final hurdle a player must overcome.

For the ambitious young Indian aspiring to play in Spain, the biggest challenge is not simply getting to trial there; but the players must be accustomed and prepared for the diverse culture of playing football there, the faster, tactical pace of the game, extremely fast pace decision-making process, and obviously fierce competition to attain the right place on a European club team. There are numerous successful examples of Indian players having the same ambition and having achieved playing at youth level academies of La Liga teams such as Xavi Hernandez at Almera. Other examples include Abneet Bharti of FC Real Valladoid Academy in Spain, both having played with high level clubs before reaching a senior level of football. These are indeed living examples demonstrating that reaching the standards required in Spain comes many years prior to a European academy becoming a reality.

7. What it will take to play in La Liga?

La Liga represents the apex of a high-pressure and challenging professional football world.

Beyond possessing the basic potential and talent, a young Indian footballer aspiring to reach this elite level must combine it with an overall development of strategic understanding on field, athletic build up, professionalism during training and play, a tough mentality and ability to handle high levels of pressure and competition at any training or match venue; together with an ability to adapt to new playing styles in any European country.

The right planning from a strategic decision-making perspective for the players is equally important. Players and families need to choose the time, the destination and the development goal before deciding on how and where to move. At times, an early move abroad to the wrong developmental setup could be equally or even more damaging compared to one more year spent playing at the elite level of football back home.

Therefore, player progression should be a focus, not merely reaching the European leagues irrespective of the developmental stage.

The way forward

The transition from a talented local footballer playing on Indian soil to a globally recognized talent playing in La Liga can indeed be a long way, but with the right guidance at each stage, it's no longer merely a dream but a clear possibility that needs efficient, organized planning and hard work to transform it into a reality.

Grassroots -> Academy -> Youth Leagues -> Scouting -> Elite Development -> Professional Football -> International Exposure -> European Academies -> La Liga.

Watch Now: Football is not a game It is an emotion

Although every player may not successfully achieve his final goal, every talented player has the right to have knowledge, an organized pathway, clear understanding, opportunities and appropriate competitive environments along the way which will take them closer to their desired career in football. India as a nation has millions of talented footballers, the next big hurdle India must overcome is ensuring that such a talent is not wasted due to lack of vision or clearly defined pathways toward achieving their dreams, but rather develop such athletes into fully formed individuals with clear goals to match their ambition toward playing at the top level of world football.
