Happy New Year! In looking at the site updates page.. it's been seven years since I started to build this site. Certainly I have not worked on it everyday. But I have input countless hours, and I have loved every second of it. Collecting cards is such a great hobby.
I did not attend the Xena Convention last year. As I mentioned before I got refunded after that last delay. And as the actual date got closer, I didn't care too much to attend. I was extremely frustrated with Creation. If there's another convention.. I will revisit and see if I want to go or not. In looking at the photos on facebook, it looks like everyone had a fantastic time.
In regard to google site updates: they have added a "clear spacer" and social media links. I added mine to the link page. I still have the custom ones I created on the lower main page. Please follow on Instagram. I don't post too much, to overwhelm your feed. But when I pick up something cool, I tend to post there first, before I get the site updated.
I picked up the last Rittenhouse wrapper reward card I needed the R1. This is the 1st Xena Costume Card, and it has the stud. The stud cards were not in packs. And they were not sold separately. There are three of them R1, R2, R3. And now all three are scanned onto the site.

I have been showing off my new card stand on instagram. I love it. It's a custom 3D printed stand. The company that made it is called Stand Up Stands. And there is a link to them on the links page. I got the black and white so it would match my binders. It looks so cool. And.. if you look at the card on the stand, that is Vanessa Angel. She was originally cast to play Xena on Hercules. And it was a done deal. She got sick right before she was to leave for New Zealand. Ren Pics had to scramble, and they cast Lucy. She was available. It's a very interesting story. I have a lot of respect for Vanessa Angel.
Since I first started this site I wanted to make a section for my other non-sports cards. I did have some of my other Xena items up. I finally made a page for cards. And my Vanessa Angel Auto card is the 1st card I put up. Over time I will add graphics, and just keep adding and adding. I will scan all of the special cards and wrappers.. but for sets... may just do a general photo. Not sure yet. Link
And some more GPK fun. haha.. I picked up the GPK cards for "Bejeweled Julie" spoofing Return of The Living Dead 3. You can see that is Melinda Clarke. She was a pretty awesome Amazon on Xena. She was very goal oriented. haha.
I have now added nine different grading companies to the links page. I doubt that's all of them. I'm kinda stunned there are that many. I guess from the slow down during the pandemic, other companies are trying to get in. Also with PSA having all sorts of issues, including not spotting repairs..etc. I shouldn't be surprised. I can't see myself sending any cards for grading. I'm not sure I trust getting back in the holder the card I sent in. It's mind boggling the amount of grading that's happing. I guess if cards are super expensive, you would own less. Therefore having them in the holders is OK. A lot of collectors do not bother with sets. With the current Star Wars the word set can't really be associated with it any more. Star Wars has been completely transformed into sports card style of collecting.
And people buy auto cards based on a projection of how their acting careers will go. hmm kinda like how sports cards collectors speculate on rookies. It's the same thing. All of this is fine.. I just think it's interesting.
I guess for me I have to be a fan of the person whose auto card I pick up. And they have to have created art that has impacted me in some way. There's no right or wrong way to collect. Just sharing my perspective.
It's 2022. I have exactly two funko pops. I do not own a single NFT. And I still have not downloaded any apps on my phone for digital "cards". I saw some Star Wars digital "cards" on twitter. And they looked really good. Great graphic design. I just can't wrap my head around spending money on them. And I'm still not calling them cards. Let's look at the word "cardboard". Those first four letters...
Been having fun reorganizing my cards that I store in boxes. These are mostly non-Xena cards. Picked up some "The Dome Box" boxes and they are great. I have 5, and I plan on getting 4 more. They are better than the white cardboard boxes. And while doing this I took a look at my old CD-R that had my excel file of my entire card collection. And it due to all this leg work being done, I was able to put this site together so quickly in the beginning.
I spent way too much time looking over all of it again. I need to double check it, and make sure I have all of the info copied over and that I did not miss anything. I have not maintained this list very well. What I have done is kept all of my scans in nested folders. This website has become my list.
I also switched out my silica packets. I do this roughly every year. They help to protect against humidly. I have them in all of my boxes and cases, and in my card cabinet. They are super cheap and they work extremely well.
When I get everything all updated.. I will share some pics. Nothing major. I moved all of my Non-Sport books to the top of my card cabinet. They are so much more handy there. I had to move them to my regular bookshelf. But no.. these need a special place.

I want to bring up a common issue when looking at cards on line for purchase. And that is the color scanning differences that happen on cards. And when looking for costume card variations, it's easy to think there's a different variation, when it's really the scanner.
The below screen shot is an example. Both of these cards are on Ebay. And they happen to be next to each other in the listings. I'm familiar with this card.. I have seen countless examples on line. And there's no way there is a "White" variation. Also when you look at the rest of the card.. it's much brighter and lighter on the white swatch version. Just a heads up on this.
When I think I have found a different enough costume card variation, I have to stop and really look. First I look at the base fabric. Is it jersey, leather, velvet? If the base fabric is different, then right away I know it's something I don't have. When it comes to colors, I'm more picky. If it's an allover print or jaquard.. I just need (1) example. If the print has distinctive areas then I may try for a different areas. If it's a solid.. The colors need to be very distinctive for me to pick it up. I do have some "slight" color versions scanned on the site. But that's because I thought they were more different than what they turned out to be. I'm adding two new costume card variations today for Dangerous Liaisons. The DC10, is a fabric variation. Demon Xena has jersey, instead of rubber. And the C2, which is usually found in brown/tan solid... has a "dark brown" area. In sports cards collectors go for every logoman variation, and/or each letter of a jersey for reference.
All of the cards on this site have been scanned with the same scanner and same settings, except sometimes I do a higher resolution. I have thought about getting a better scanner, since the prices keep going down and the quality keeps going up. But my OCD would require a complete rescanning of my entire collection, and the adding the watermarks again. I'm not opposed to it. But then I get iffy about taking my cards out of the plastic to scan. And this I never do. And you have to do that to get the best image. So maybe it's not worth the effort. And I will mention again.. that every single card, sticker, card item, uncut sheet, sell sheet and all promo material etc.., 100% everything is scanned or photographed from my PC. And I compiled all of the data, sitting with my cards and typing away. Various card producers have provided data, such as card quantities and other production data that would be impossible to be aware of otherwise. I copied all of that data for my personal use and have it added to the set pages where relevant. I did this because I wanted to have complete information, and also web pages have a habit of disappearing, so this is also to archive the information.

And speaking of sports cards.. (which thankfully I don't collect, nor do I watch sports. Either women's or men's.) There was an amazing incredible sports card show in Burbank this weekend. I did not attend. I was very tempted.. since I love looking at sports cards. I just love cardboard. Also wanted to look at the new grading technologies of a new company "Tag". And what happens in sports cards.. finds it's way into non sports, so I always have my eyes on it. There's were some other awesome things going on there too.
And in the LA area we have some great sport cards shops which are so handy for supplies. They have non sports boxes, etcs.. but it's such a tiny fraction. And I am so specialized in my collecting. I will never find cards there I would want to add to my collection. But card buzz = card high.. and these shops to provide cardboard haven.. So I take it in when I can.
In fact Bullpen LA saved me big $ on toploaders during the pandemic. They were higher but they did not price gouge like sellers did on line. There is also Burbank Sports Cards. And a new shop called Cards and Coffee. It's a high end sports card shop. It's on Hollywood Blvd, so it's actually the closest to where I live. I need to visit, I have not been there yet. They are down the street from the new location for Amoeba Music,
Back about the sports card show this weekend.. I was thinking I would hop over and check it out..Well the show was slammed and if I did, I would have had to wait hours to get in. And being a non-sports collector.. it was not worth it this go around. Also the big card news was the 52 Mantle selling for over 12 million $. So that happened this weekend too. The sports card market is flying high. And what that means, is that all the success in sports cards will mean more opportunities for non-sports.
Shelfie
I was lucky to come across a pretty awesome item. It was not listed well. It was for a Dark Horse signing card from 1999. Dark Horse Presents. DHP Jr. And Xena is featured right on the front. The back is signed by Joyce Chin! So happy to have this. There are other amazing artists on there as well. I added it to the Dark Horse signing cards page. The are six autographs on the back. I can't identify the last one. This is a real prize.
It's always cool when brand new XWP items are released. And this year Super 7 released Xena and Gabrielle action figures. These figures are smaller than the deluxe Toy Biz ones. They are retro 70's/80's style. Small, less points of articulation, and throw back sculp style. I don't have them. I found the price point to be on the high side. But they are very cool. Here are some photos and You Tube reviews from action figure collectors. You can really see in the video, just how nice they are. Product Page
I was excited like everyone to see that Xena was an easter egg in Marvel's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This reminds me of when E.T. was an easter egg in Star Wars the Phantom Menace. The E.T's were in the senate chamber. I really like the statue in Doctor Strange. I used a couple of images from it to be header photos on this site for a couple of pages.

Yes I did... I picked up the Herc Funko Pop. I now own two of these small plastic creations. And his plastic pose.. is the same as his Hercules autograph card, as can be seen on the sell sheet on the photo.
Also, I updated the link page for Varèse Sarabande to link to the vinyl of Xena Season 5 picture disc. The CD soundtrack set is sold out.
I recently found out that this spring Topps created a Xena sticker for their Garbage Pail Kids line.
You can view the product page here . They are sold out, but you can find them on line for sale. There are two versions of the sticker. And a parallel in sepia for each. I have them on order.. and I will add them all to the site.
This is very cool. This is the 1st official main Xena type card in a while. And it's a GPK sticker. GPK has a long history of popular releases, and is a major part of non-sports card lore. Yes the card is "Gross", and "Offensive". If it wasn't it wouldn't be GPK. I'm kinda surprised there's no snot on there.. but you never know how the tools of satire will be used.
I'm still not sure what I'm doing regarding the Xena Con later this year. I'm still planning on picking up a general admission ticket, if it happens.. see how it goes.

I made an update to the site navigation. I dropped most things from the side bar. So the main way to browse sets is by the main page.
A couple of weeks ago, Creation postponed the Xena con again. While I know that was a very good thing for all. I decided to cash out. I requested a refund for my gold ticket and autographs. With the pandemic nowhere under control, especially in Australia and NZ. I don't see it happening in 2022 either. Travel restrictions and quarantines will still be in place. I hope I'm wrong. Also Creation is a little um.. it's hard to put into words.. but I will say they are a business that does not put their customers first. And they get a way with it, since they are the only game town. And during a pandemic when people need a little extra service and attention and transparency. They are not delivering it.
That said.. if the con happens I will go with the gen ticket, that I will purchase later on. This was my original intention.. I did get swept up in getting a gold ticket.
So happy. A few weeks ago I was able to get a lot of Xena TGC French editions packs and deck boxes. The set is the same except in French. I added a few images to the card main page here .
I don't know where to start in talking about everything that has been happing in the card market. One thing for sure, this will be talked about for decades in the future. There are so many variables. It's debatable how important each factor is.. but they all are in play.
Obviously the pandemic is the 1st and probably major factor. So many Americans got the extra 600$ per week in benefits. There were two rounds of stimulus checks that most people got. There are many people not paying rent, and can't be evicted till after the pandemic. Therefore that creates even more disposable cash. Then with all of the closures and shut downs, and lack of travel that creates even more available cash.
There is also the psychological effects lockdown and fear, and dread about the future. This creates a perfect storm of comfort buying on a scale never seen before. And that's just the start of it.
With all the extra cash chasing goods, this creates a hyper inflation in the collectables market. Even though there's less inflation elsewhere.
How this is possible... is that on line ordering was so dominant even before the pandemic. So the system was in place. Yes there were slowdowns especially overseas.. The workers had to stay 6 feet apart, the mail was moving slower... but it was moving.
So there's the existing collectors who can navigate and find deals. But there's a massive influx of new collectors and cross collecting that set this all off.
I'm a good example. I started from scratch on DVD/BD collecting and in a year I collected over 200 DVD's and about 45 BD's from all over the world. And I built two entire websites for these collections. I had no knowledge of the market. I know I overpaid. I also didn't have knowledge on the particulars of DVD/BD's hobby. I have learned so much. I'm extremely proud of the collection. And in the big picture I'm glad I have what I have, because I have learned that these things can dry up do to the popularity of the actresses very quickly.
So I would be a cross collector, because I'm already a Card/CD/Stamp collector.
I posted a youtube video in the blog post about the impact of sports card collectors jumping into the comics market. It's an excellent analysis that can be applied to any cross collecting. And for certain sports card collectors crossed over to non-sports. Their use of the term "Rookie" for the 1st Luke Skywalker card gives it away. And their persistence in using it even after they learn we don't use it, just shows that's their understanding.
Also within the sport card collectors there's a lot of flippers who either use it to make money or fund purchases.
There is also the specter of investment in the higher end celebrity autographs.
It's not just sports card collectors buying non-sports causing prices to go up, collectors from other areas are getting into cards, all cards including gaming cards like Pokémon.
I've seen book collectors, action figure collectors, comic collectors and video game collectors get into cards. Also sports cards has been infused with a lot of new collectors, that never collected anything before.
And that has led to mainstream media writing about record card prices and it's surge in popularity, which in turn made it even more popular.
Also there has been volumes of cards summited that have crashed PSA. That's a whole story unto itself.. and the entire grading market has a been effected. The consensus is that it's flippers that sent the most cards in.
The reasons are of course varied, but once people find out how cheap some cards are.. some cards are pennies. They don't take up that much space compared to other collections, and it's fun. People get into cards.
Cards can be kept in binders and read like a book. Or kept in boxes in toploaders or one touches. While some people could fill a basement with cards. Most people will fill a bookcase or two.. and that's a pretty big collection.
And of course many are here just for the money.
I want to share a photo of a collection of GPK sticker's a collector is selling on eBay. I'm posting it because it really tells a story. A collecting story. Two bookcases of stickers from 1985 to the present and complete master sets and ephemera in two bookcases.
If you tried to collect all of the Star Wars action figures from the mid 80s to now,, you would need more that two bookcases. Same with just all of the Star Wars books. 35 years of any mass produced collectable licensed merch will take a whole room.
Also if you look at the two shelfs, if you got rid of the boxes.. you could use even less space... And it looks amazing. Well organized and neat. It's a beautiful thing.
All of these factors, all mixed up and a little different for each person, leads to the non-sport market inflating and blowing up in price. As well as many cards being difficult to find.
EBAY COLLECTION FOR SALE
April 4, 2021
I posted on Instagram a photo of some Star Wars Auto cards from the Clone Wars, The character of Mortis Daughter / Voiced by Adrienne Wilkinson. I love that I can pursue collecting Star Wars cards, that feature such a talented actress, who also was on Xena. I just got one that is a 1/1. The Cyan printing plate in the photo. This is my second Star Wars 1/1. After I was looking at these cards.. I had a nice sit down and looked over all my SW sets.
Having a look at card prices.. I can't help but think inflation is here, so even after the collectable markets cool down.. higher prices will stay due to inflation. So I'm collecting more, and carefully. And I'm so happy to just add cards here and there, and not have to buy in this market.
One of the things that I have been thinking about is. Am I a Xena collector or Non-Sports Card collector? If I tell some one, I collected Xena, it has to be noted that I mostly collect the cards. And when I tell people I collect cards, it has to be noted that I mostly collect Xena cards. I guess I'm both. But since I'm a life long card collector, and when Xena came on the air I was already an adult, I lean more towards defining my collecting as a Non-Sports Card collector. And my Favorite TV was, is and forever will be Xena.
