We are currently working with Pierre-Joan Bernard (Archives de Montpellier) on a critical edition of this play on tunes from the second half of the 17th century. Editions exist, but which do not take into account the whole textual tradition, and do not analyse the musical context of the play, in particular the tunes on which the play is composed.
Texts in Occitan emanating from the protestant minority in Languedoc are very rare. This unpublished manuscript of the Archives départementales du Tarn addresses the ailments of the protestants after the revocation of the Nantes edict in 1685, which put an end to religious freedom in France. The cause, according to the author, is to be found into the sinful lives of protestants, which triggered God's vengeance.
This is a project in collaboration with Dr Nora Baker (University of Tokio), who is a specialist of French protestant texts from the Refuge (England, Netherlands) in the 17th and 18th century.
This unpublished mid-18th century manuscript translation of Virgil's Eglogues is a rare example of an older text from the margins of the Occitan speaking territory, in Charente. The edition of the text and the study of its language will probably reveal interesting patterns about the changes that occurred in these varieties during the past two centuries.
