I have been working since 2020 on the theory of morphological features, in line with the work of Corbett (2012).
Corbett defines a number of interface features between morphology and other components of the grammar, in addition to morphological features which correspond largely to morphomic structures as defined by Maiden (2018), following Aronoff (1994). Among interface features are morphosyntactic features, defined essentially by the presence of agreement for the said feature: their number is limited, and includes gender, number, and person. Corbett notes in passing that such features are strictly morpho-syntactico-semantic features, in that they always include an element of meaning associated with agreement.
A number of phenomena I have been investigating seem to define a type of features that was not included in Corbett's typology: strictly morpho-syntactic features, which are features which relate morphology and syntax to the exclusion of semantics, contrary to the usually defined morphosyntactic features. Among those, I have investigated the feature of POSITION, which happens to be marked morphologically in a number of Romance paradigms. The work is under revision for publication. I am developping this work to find out whether other types of features can be assumed to belong to the category of strictly morpho-syntactic features (the answer is yes!).Â
