IEEE WCCI 2024 Special Session
Explainable AI and Green Computing for Human-Centered Evolutionary Computation
Yokohama, Japan
Aim & scopes
Artificial intelligence (AI) surpasses human capabilities by intricately designed and highly complex algorithms coupled with massive computational power in certain fields, such as image processing and natural language processing. However, most such AI are hard to understand because of black-box systems and do not contribute to environmental conservation because of a lot of energy use. These issues have raised concerns not only about coexistence with humans but also about the sustainability of AI applications. To address these issues, this special session aims to explore the indispensable aspects of “explainability” and “sustainability” in advancing human-centered evolutionary computation (EC). These dual challenges contribute to ensuring reliable AI systems while minimizing their environmental load. From this motivation, this special session (i) examines how EC methods can coexist and synergize with humans from a cooperative and symbiotic perspective between humans and AI, and (ii) delves into the role of EC methods in achieving a sustainable society through green computing. These two approaches addressed in this special session contribute to the evolution of EC methodologies aligned with human values, expectations, and ethical considerations in the domains of explainable AI (XAI) and green computing. Note that “explainability” and “sustainability” are current issues broadly relevant not only in the domain of EC but also in computational intelligence, including neural networks and fuzzy, which means that this special session covers all technical areas in the WCCI conference.
