Abandoned and alone, a malfunctioning robot must travel through the ruins of their ancient home, now occupied by robotic scavengers. Escaping from Planet Junk is the only option.
This project is still in development and is not ready to show to the public. Images, Videos, and development info will be added to this page upon completion.
The main menu brings the player several options to select. They can start a new game, load a specific level, or check out the credits, which contain resources used in the project. Selecting each option will play a sound effect and a short animation which pans the camera to a different area of the menu.
The first level starts the player in a trash heap, where they must learn to repair themselves and climb out of the pit. Then they will learn to destroy a door with their water cannon, giving them access to a large area separated by a river. If the player enters water, their parts will rust and fall off. The player's parts also rust passively, albeit at a much slower rate. If all four limbs fall off, the player will respawn in a different trash heap in the level. To cross the river, the player will first need to defeat the enemies guarding a raised bridge, then break the chain holding the bridge up. These enemies also have water cannons to attack the player with. Crossing the bridge will lead to more enemies guarding a door. Passing this obstacle leads to a second raised bridge and a cliff just beyond it that must be climbed to reach the exit.
The second level has the player begin in a familiar predicament. They are in a trash heap and must climb out of it after repairing their missing limbs. After escaping, they find themselves outside of a building overlooking waterfalls. To reach the building, the player will have to quickly wade through water to break a high-up chain, then climb a cliff and break a second chain. This drops two sides of a bridge that leads to some enemies. Destroying them will clear the path to a thick wooden door that cannot be destroyed with water. They player will need to find a gearbox nearby and destroy that to open the way ahead. When the player enters the building, they will need to destroy the four enemies inside, then deliberately destroy their own legs to crawl into a small opening in the far wall.
Once the player has crawled through the hole, they can repair themselves and make their way to a control room to shut off water coming from a pipe. Doing so will flood that room with water, forcing the player to escape quickly or die. When they have turned the water off, they can climb into the pipe to reach the exit.
The Scrapbots of Planet Junk was conceptualized in May of 2020. It was intended to be a one-shot prototype based on light survival mechanics and environmental puzzle solving. The prototype was developed solely by me and contained 2 levels, a basic combat system, and custom models/animations. After completing the prototype, I was excited to continue the project but the opportunity didn't present itself until I started my graduate program.
In 2021, I was accepted into an on-campus internship and published a different title, after which I was able to begin development on my own project. I chose to continue work on Scrapbots, which gave me a head-start in development. As a project lead, I quickly realized how much of my time would be devoted to team management. I adapted to this new change of responsibility and worked to finally release the game on itch.io.
