Establishing clear expectations using visual aids can be very helpful to students in understanding and remembering the rules of the classroom. I will create a poster that lists the main rules of the classroom. The main three rules for students to follow are; "Be Respectful," "Be Responsible," and "Be Safe." The poster will be placed in the classroom where all students can clearly see. I will also include pictures next to each rule to make the poster more accessible for students with language barriers.
In the classroom, I will utilize positive reinforcement that encourages desired and positive behaviors and create a positive classroom environment. A reward system will be implemented, such as a sticker chart or point system. Students can earn rewards for good behavior and following classroom expectations. These rewards include things like homework passes, pencils and erasers, or sitting in the teacher’s chair in class. Implementing positive reinforcement and a reward system motivates students to follow expectations. This creates a positive classroom environment and encourages good behavior.
Having structured routines can help students feel secure and understand what is going on throughout the day. I will create a daily schedule that includes clear transitions between lessons and periods. The daily schedule will be displayed in front of the classroom and will be reviewed each morning. Students will be involved in important everyday classroom tasks, such as taking attendance or passing out papers and materials, to give them a sense of responsibility.
Having students involved in creating classroom norms gives them a sense of ownership and accountability. At the beginning of the year as a class, we will discuss and create classroom rules or norms. Students will be allowed to suggest and vote on rules, with each rule having to be approved by the teacher. The set of rules will be put on a poster on the front of the classroom door, where it will be the first thing students see upon entering. This approach helps students feel respected and more willing to follow the rules of the classroom.
In class, I will reflect on the effectiveness of our classroom rules and expectations, making adjustments if needed. I will also encourage students to provide feedback on what’s working and what might need improvement. This makes students feel valued which can greatly help with creating a positive learning environment. Periodic reflection also allows students to assess their own behaviors and progress.
