Contraindications are conditions that make massage therapy risky.
These are examples, not an exhaustive list.
A local contraindication means I can massage other areas but not over the contraindicated area. Some include:
severe acne
recent injury, burn, or cut
A total contraindication means I cannot massage you at all until the condition has passed. Some include:
heart, kidney, or liver failure
unmanaged diabetes
infection
clots/thrombosis
There is a middle ground where you can receive massage still, but with accommodated techniques or a doctor's note of recommendation and approval. This would apply
during pregnancy
after surgeries
people who bruise easily
