ARTS/BIOL 409H: Science and Printmaking
Project one: "Knitocytes"
This project's theme was "micro to macro", and I took that very literally. It moves inward from a knitted fabric to a looping piece of yarn, to a single strand of keratin, to the skin cells that produce the hair of animals, centered with a needle that could sew them all together.
Project two: "Squeeze"
The second project's theme was "biological motion" which I detailed in a comic-strip-esque snapshot of water moving through a plant through the processes of transpiration and the water cycle.
Project three: "An Anatomy of the Textile Industry"
For the final project we were given the freedom to choose the printing methods, substrate, and scientific topic of the work. I branched away from the more dogmatic molecular and cellular biology of my earlier projects to look at the collection of sciences that form and influence textile production. These include public health, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science.Â
