HISTORY OF ECWA GOWON ESTATE
PHASE 1
Ecwa Gowon Estate vision was conceived by the ECWA Youth if Agege (LC) IN 1996 who taught that being a Yoruba based Church Saw the need to evangelize the Hausa Muslim community of Agege. These zealous mission minded leaders and members of the Agege youth fellowship were made up of the following brethren: Bro Shola Elijah, Bro Kayode Awojobi, Bro Shola Alade, Sis Funice, Bro Majiyagbe Samson, Bro Bunmi Akinwande, Bro Gbega Falola, etc. They organized a crusade in partnership with ECWA Marine Beach, Apapa's "Sabon Rai Don Kowa" (New Life For All Gospel Team) which was heldin 1999 with the viewing of Jesus' film in Hausa Language Rev. Peter Auta Jinjiri led the team to successful outreach Moricas which witnessed new converts that accepted Jesus Christ As their personal Lord And Savior.
With the new converts, fellowship began in a small shop at Moricas Agege. The church suffers a lot of set-backs due to a number of factors, like the worship place was not conductive, no Hausa Pastor, chairs were rented every week and carried to the place of worshp and it appears like only a youth affair. With time, brethren from ECWA Marine Beach, Apapa and Ojo of New Life For All were coming around to give sermons in hausa on Sunday Services, giving support to the Agege youth that were majorly yoruba speaking people did not understand hausa language, nut due to their love for the LORD they made effort to learn some choruses in hausa. After a while Pastor Caleb Kubas (as he then was) from kaduna state services was brought to Lagos to come and lead and lead the new found souls for christ. Worthy to note here is that the church started as a Hausa based church with Pastor Caleb Kubas as its pioneering under-shepherd. Like the proverbial saying goes; "stress makes fine steel" and as recorded in the bible on church was bedeviled by intense persecution from the hausa Muslims Community in Agege. They would insult, threatened and even destroyed the place of worship after each Sunday Service. To this fact, the church could not continue meeting fellowship.
PHASE 2
In the year of our LORD Jesus Christ, 2001, the family of Mr and Mrs. John Ndaka (Then Members Of ECWA Agege) were burdened with the need to start an ECWA Hausa Church IN Gowon Estate. They confided in Commander Yusuf Taylor who worshipped with UCCN (HEKAN) Gowon Estate, though an ECWA Member from the North. These two families met with the families of Elder Ngai Parmaina who was worshipping at ECWA Yaba. They all came together and started an evening worship at elder Ngai's residence to rekindle the lost fellowship of Moricas. They once again contacted Pastor Caleb Kubas who was still at Agege to pastor them after the previous experience.
The first fellowship took place at Gowon Estate in may 2001 with the following families: Elder & Mrs. Ngai Parmaina, Elder & Mrs. Ndaka, Mr and Mrs Audu Daniel, Bro Aaron Parmaina, among others. This same fellowship later secured a class room at Palmville schools for a regular Sunday worship service. Under the spiritual leadership of Reverend Caleb Kubas left us for Badagry where his ministry took him and handed over the church to Elder Ngai Parmaina.
This nascent church was left without a pastor for about 18 months. The church prevailed on Mushin DCC office to send a Pastor, after a previous failed attempts. It is trite to commend the zealousness of Mrs Ndaka on the growth of the collective efforts, Pastor Simon Itodo Abass was posted to the church. Though a Northener, but he could not speak hausa fluently.
Rev'd S.I Abbas (of blessed memory, who is now with our LORD and savior Jesus Christ) resumed in Gowon estate on 12th August 2002 with a sermon from the book of Mathew he titled: ECWA GOWON ESTATE "a mustard Seed". The sermon was poised to drive member's passion for the church. The church had four families and a total population of over 35 members including children. He stressed of Baba Olubunmi, Mr & Mrs. Fain Philip, Mr Gidago, Mr & Mrs Samson Sanda and others joined the fellowship. The new Reverend who was still a banker then had a bigger vision of transforming the church into a viable assembly. He commenced work on securing a landed property for the church and status of the church. the latter was achieved on 1st of December, 2002 where the then Local Overseer of Agege LCC, Rev'd Falade and the then Lagos DCC Chairman- Rev'd M.D. Adeboye were invited, they came and prayed, inducted and pronounced the church's full-fledged LC, having met the mandatory requirement of Seven Baptized Members.
Haven Spent about Nine Years in Palmville Schools, the Mushin DCC office transferred Pastor David Ravo Aya (as he then was) to take over from Rev. S.I Abass. He reported on 9th May, 2010 and was installed on the following sunday 16th May,2010 by the Local Overseer of Agege LCC - Rev'd Kayode Solomon. Pastor Aya's first Sermon was titled: "The Need for Intercessors" (Exodus 22:30-31) was born out of the zeal to move the church to a greater height. With the vision he conceived for the church, he outlined the following steps as a priority.
Soon the challenge of acquiring a landed property for the church became a herculean task worthy to face. This was taken by a leap of faith with an unswerving effort. The church remained indivisibly one on this goal; knowing fully well how enormous such project could be compared to their numerical strength. The challenge is that when such property got to #1.5 million the church could not obtain it; due to paucity of funds. This struggle continued for Ten years with landed properties appreciating on daily basis. Until God brought us to our promise land in 2013 where we got this land at the rate of 20million naira and God in His infinite provision made it possible for us to acquire the property. What a great God we serve!
We took Possession of this property and clean same on 7th of December 2013 with a delegation from the DCC (Rev'd Emmanuel K. Solomon -MDCC Accountant) who declared and pronounced blessings upon the church and its members. Afterwards the church began to experience an exponential growth, stability and courage to clear her debts. The church never relented on her efforts to meet up with her founding vision as thus: To evangelize northern Muslims and provide a place of worship for converts in Lagos.
Ecwa Gowon Estate was Strategically planted to meet the need of the lost world and mostly to all ECWA Sons & Daughters from the Northern Part of this Country. Who are either residing in Lagos or came in as a result of their Jobs. That is why the composition of the church is obviously Northerners. However, this church can be regarded as a transit church for Northerners in Lagos. This Church is a God's family Church closely knitted into Christ where higher grounds are conquered through committed members and Ministers of God and Where Agape love reign supreme.
And subsequently we ahve been Having different Pastors.
And the Present Pastor of Our church is Reverend Okonu Yusuf.
