Between the ages of 11 and 18, there are over 2.2 million youth members of the Scouting organization, and there are about 800,000 volunteers working in local councils across the United States and its territories.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much of a Commitment is Boy Scouts?
It can be as much or as little as you wish it to be. There is no requirement for attendance although it is a fun activity to miss out on. To successfully rank up through BSA a scout can go at the pace they wish.
How often do we do Activities?
We have weekly meetings on Thursdays where we do a variety of activities such as advancements, classes to learn about scout skills. We also have campouts monthly where we go to campsites usually within 30 minutes to 2 hours away. Also, we complete service projects at a collection of different places, including churches, parks, and other places. Check out our Photo Gallery for more.
How does the requirement system work, to get my Eagle?
There are 7 ranks, they go in order from top to bottom as the picture shows on the right: Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life Scout, Eagle Scout.
"The first rank, SCOUT, is earned by demonstrating a basic knowledge of Scouting ideals and symbolism along with several commonly used knots. " (Great Smoky Mountain Council BSA.)
"TENDERFOOT, the second rank, recognizes new skills in Scoutcraft, physical fitness, citizenship, personal growth, and Scout Spirit. To earn the Tenderfoot rank, you’ll spend the night in a tent you help pitch, begin learning first aid, assist in preparing a camp meal, and begin learning to use and care for camp tools like a knife, saw, and ax." "To earn the SECOND CLASS rank, you’ll expand your Scoutcraft skills, spending more nights outdoors, building a campfire, planning and cooking camp meals, the using a compass and map, identifying wild animals and plants, and developing swimming and water rescue skills. "Requirement for the FIRST CLASS rank include continuing to build on the Scoutcraft skills learned for the Second Class rank, plus learning about weather, the use of a GPS unit, canoeing or kayaking, more advanced first aid and rescue techniques, and civic concerns like constitutional rights and obligations." "STAR SCOUT, the third-highest rank, is awarded when you have served actively in your unit in a position of responsibility for at least four months, performed at least six hours of community service, and earned six merit badges." (Great Smoky Mountain Council BSA.)
