Owners must protect a minimum of 2 players (only eligible players)
Owner may protect a 3rd player, but they will forfeit a pick from the round he was drafted the previous year.
If an owner wants to protect a player that was protected in a round from the previous year, he must protect him in the K1 or K2 rounds only.
Players that have been protected for 2 consecutive seasons MUST return to the free agent pool (unless they were drafted as a rookie)
Rookie Exceptions:
Owners may protect a rookie a total number of 3 years as long as:
Rookies do not count toward the maximum of 3 protected players
Protecting a DRAFTED rookie will forfeit a 15th round draft pick.
Protecting an UNDRAFTED rookie will forfeit a 8th round draft pick.
Owners may protect up to 2 rookies each year
Rookies will be determined by MLB rules
50 innings pitched
130 at bats
45 days on a MLB roster
An owner could realistically protect 5 players (3 regulars and 2 rookie).
