Do you wonder what really happens in a therapy/counseling session? Let us explore and get to know how it works.
It is important to gain the trust of the client and make them comfortable as well as safe to express their feelings and problems without any hesitation. Initial focus is given to enhancing the relationship of the client with the therapist so that the bond they share helps the client to benefit from the therapy and have a positive expeirience.
Once the identification of the issue is done, the therapist along with the client sets certain goals to achieve. These goals mould the process of therapy for the client as well as the therapist. Setting the right goals will make the client feel a sense of progress and boost their motivation to carry on.
Every individual is different, and hence every individual deserves an approach that best fits their therapy process. The therapist plans an intervention for the client using the techniques which might work best on them. This makes the client feel comfortable using that approach and enables them to open up more in therapy and explore themselves and aspects of their life if the right therapeutic intervention is used.
When the therapist senses that the client is progressing very well and now is able to take control of their life and the decisions they make, then comes the time to end the therapy sessions and let the client start implementing the changes/learnings they worked on during therapy. the therapist might also add a follow-up date for the client to check up on their progress so far.
Some things to take care during a therapy session
Time is of essence and the client gets an average of 40-60 minutes for every session. It is essential for the client to understand that therapy is a structured process where in time is something that needs to be kept in mind. Lack of mindfulness for time can lead to the patient deviating from the problem rather than focusing on the issue at hand and that could delay the entire therapeutic process.
The therapist tries to keep a track of goals that are being set and whether the client is able to fulfil them or not. But it is also the client's responsibility to keep on checking their goals and whether they are closer to it or far away from them. This helps the client to check their progress and understand how much efforts/work they need to put in order to achieve their therapeutic goals.
In order to reach the set goals, there is work that needs to be done outside the therapy room as well. There are tasks assigned to the clients and they must complete them in order to reach their goals. The therapist aims to work on various aspects of the client's personality as well as problems they are focusing through giving them simple tasks to do. This starts the process of real change in the client, and later highlights the progress of the client throughout the therpaeutic process.
