Week 1. - Puppies are born in our house and are handled with gentle and safe touch from day #1! Early stimulation and human contact from birth is essential the healthy development and has been proven to improve puppies immune systems! Learn more about our ENS handeling by going to Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS): Implications for canine welfare and management
Week 2- Eyes and ears are starting to open at this age and it is essential that they see and hear their human family to grow up knowing that people are kind and trustworthy. We are a big part of our puppies' pack from the moment they are born, but we become real to them once they are old enough to listen to us talk to them and see us visit them throughout each day!
Week 3- At this age puppies are growing rapidly and getting them used to touch is important. Raising puppies in our home allows them to be submerged in the lifestyle of the average family while their mother has 24-7 access to them. Patting, snuggling, kissing, talking to, and handling puppies at this age is essential. They are starting to crawl so making sure that their play space is warm enough and hazard free is key! We begin introducing new textures for puppies to explore in their nursery area.
Week 4- Teeth! This is the week when most puppies grow their first baby teeth! We begin offering softened puppy food in addition to the mother's full time nursing. Puppies are becoming more mobile at this age so we offer supports in their gross motor development to work on balance, confidence, and create an environment that encourages movement and play to build those young puppy muscles!
Week 5- Tons of interactive toys that promote cooperative play are a must at this age! Socialization is in full swing so allowing puppies to explore new toys and games with littermates and their mother (as well as humans) is the main goal for this week.
Week 6- At this age being a breeder is a full time baby-sitting job. Potty training is in full swing (YES WE START ALL OF OUR PUPPIES ON POTTY PAD TRAINING) New sights, sounds, and smells are important! We introduce our puppies to recordings of city streets, our household appliances, differently dressed people and voices. Having the mother present for the initial introduction of a new sound is a process we feel helps to make the puppies comfortable and realize that if the mother is not concerned, this new thing is not a threat!
Week 7- This is the age when our puppies visit the vet for their checkup to make sure there are no health issues! Though we have done extensive testing in health and genetics, it is always best to double check with a veterinarian prior to placing pupping with their forever family!
Week 8 - By this age puppies are fully weaned from their mother and are completely on a diet of puppy food. We feed our puppies four times daily at this age to be sure their blood sugar remains at a healthy level. As they grow this schedule can be lessened to a thrice daily feeding schedule. Socialization is still our priority as we continue to show the puppies new things to broaden their horizons. Most puppies are 99% potty trained at this age and we begin introducing recall with 'come' and 'stay' before playtime begins. Some puppies are ready to leave their mom!
Week 9- GO HOME - this is our go home week for smaller puppies! As long as we have the approval from our vet, puppies are allowed to join their forever homes this week! Remember, this is a big step for your puppy but we are here to support you! If there is ever anything you need don't hesitate to reach out to us!
