If you want a dedicated, high-capacity storage unit with smooth-sliding drawers for a standard truck bed that works alongside tonneau covers, choose Wultek 5-Drawer; if you need a rugged, weather-sealed side-mount step box designed specifically for heavy-duty semi-trucks like Peterbilt or Kenworth, choose Generic 12.
• Wultek 5-Drawer: Strength lies in its five-ball-bearing drawer system and powder-coated steel durability; trade-off is it requires a full truck bed footprint and cannot function as a step. Best for fleet managers needing organized tool storage in standard pickup beds.
• Generic 12: Strength is its dual-purpose design as a secure footstep and water-resistant saddle box for heavy trucks; trade-off is limited to side-mount installation and fewer internal compartments. Best for commercial drivers who need access to the cab deck and secure gear on frame rails.
The Wultek 5-Drawer is engineered for the professional who treats their truck bed as a mobile workshop. Its core design philosophy centers on organization and accessibility. The unit features a heavy-gauge steel body finished with a hard-wearing powder coat, ensuring it can withstand the rigors of daily professional use without compromising its appearance over time. This isn't just a box; it is a precision-built storage solution where every component serves a specific function. The standout feature is the five-drawer configuration: three large drawers standing 3-11/16 inches high and two compact drawers at 1-3/4 inches high. This clear distinction allows you to segregate tools effectively, keeping heavy items separate from small fasteners or delicate instruments.
For anyone working in parking garages or tight industrial lots, the quick-release mounting base is a critical advantage. This system allows the entire unit to separate cleanly from its mounting bolts, meaning you can remove the whole toolbox instantly when you need full access to your truck bed for oversized loads. Furthermore, the design respects the modern truck owner's desire for a clean look. It is purposefully built to coexist with tonneau covers, bed liners, and bed caps. You don't have to choose between security and aesthetics; this box fits within a fully kitted-out truck bed without conflict.
However, this product is not for everyone. If you drive a Class 8 semi-truck or require a step to reach your sleeper cab, this unit will not work for you. It is strictly a bed-mounted solution. If your primary goal is simply carrying a few loose items in the back, the complexity of five drawers might be overkill compared to a simple open bin. But for the user who values order, speed of access, and durability, the Wultek 5-Drawer offers a level of refinement that generic bins simply cannot match.

The Generic 12 Inch Truck Step Box targets a completely different demographic: the heavy-duty commercial driver. This aluminum side mount tool box is a masterclass in multi-functionality. It doubles as both a reliable footstep and a practical storage solution. For drivers of Peterbilt, Kenworth, International, Western-Star, or Mack trucks, the ability to organize towing gear, chains, ropes, and cleaning products while simultaneously providing slip-free footing is invaluable. The textured anti-slip step is not an afterthought; it is an engineered surface designed to keep boots planted securely even in wet or oily conditions.
Security and environmental protection are paramount in this design. The box features a secure rubber seal that prevents dust and water from entering the storage area. In the harsh environments where semi-trucks operate, keeping your valuables dry and free of grit is essential. The T-style latch, complete with dual keys, adds a layer of tamper resistance, giving you peace of mind that your gear remains protected from theft and hazards.
This product is ideal for those who spend long hours on the road and need quick access to the cab deck without climbing onto the tires or running boards. However, it is limited by its mounting requirements. It is specially designed to fit vehicle frame rails and may not be compatible with standard pickup trucks or smaller vehicles. If you are looking for a box to sit inside a cargo bed, this side-mount saddle design will not serve your needs. It is a specialized piece of equipment for the heavy hauler who prioritizes accessibility and weather resistance over deep internal drawer organization.
• Best for Parking Garage Organization → Wultek 5-Drawer: The five-drawer layout with distinct sizes allows for precise categorization of tools, which is vital in confined garage spaces where clutter must be minimized.
• Best for Heavy-Duty Frame Rail Mounting → Generic 12: Specifically engineered for the frame rails of major semi-truck brands, offering a secure side-mount solution that standard boxes cannot provide.
• Best for Weather and Dust Protection → Generic 12: The rubber seal and enclosed aluminum design offer superior defense against the elements compared to the open-bed exposure of the Wultek unit.
• Best for Quick Bed Access → Wultek 5-Drawer: The fast-release base allows for the removal of the entire unit in minutes, freeing up the bed for oversized cargo without disassembling the box itself.
• Best for Dual-Function Utility (Step + Storage) → Generic 12: No other box combines a secure storage compartment with a safe, anti-slip stepping surface for reaching the cab.
• Best for Smooth Drawer Operation → Wultek 5-Drawer: All five drawers travel on ball-bearing slides, ensuring consistent, stable motion that resists jamming under load.
• Best for Compatibility with Tonneau Covers → Wultek 5-Drawer: Designed specifically to sit low enough and shape correctly to work seamlessly with aftermarket bed covers and caps.
• Best Value for Commercial Fleets → Generic 12: The aluminum construction and specific fitment for major truck brands make it a cost-effective upgrade for fleets operating semi-trucks.
In my opinion, if you are outfitting a standard pickup truck for work in parking garages or industrial zones, the Wultek 5-Drawer is the superior choice. The combination of ball-bearing slides, a powder-coated finish, and the ability to release the unit quickly makes it the most functional tool storage option for that environment. Conversely, if you operate a semi-truck and need to access the cab deck frequently while securing your gear against the elements, the Generic 12 is the only logical path forward. I would buy the Wultek for my personal work truck because the organizational capacity and ease of removal outweigh the lack of a step function. For the commercial driver, the Generic 12 wins due to its specialized frame rail compatibility and weather sealing.
The Generic 12 features a secure rubber seal explicitly designed to prevent dust and water entry, making it highly weather-resistant. The Wultek 5-Drawer uses a heavy-gauge steel body with a powder coating for durability but is intended for a truck bed environment where total submersion protection is less critical than tool organization.
No, the Generic 12 is specifically designed for frame rail mounting on heavy-duty semi-trucks such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, International, Western-Star, and Mack. It is not compatible with standard pickup truck beds or frame configurations.
The Wultek utilizes a fast-release base mounting system. This allows the entire unit to separate cleanly from its mounting bolts, enabling you to lift the box out of the bed entirely when you need full truck bed access.
Yes, the Generic 12 includes a T-style latch featuring dual keys. This design provides a secure closure mechanism to help prevent tampering and ensures your belongings remain safe from theft while the vehicle is parked.
