As we step into the 21st century, humanity faces a grave threat: environmental pollution. Wildlife is being slaughtered, hillsides are ruthlessly cleared, forests are decimated, and riverbeds are stripped of sand and gravel. At its root, this destruction is driven by humanity’s insatiable desires.
The Buddha taught that "all phenomena are created by the mind." The suffering brought about by environmental degradation stems directly from our own unpurified minds. Why, then, are our minds so clouded? According to the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination in early Buddhism, all sorrow, lamentation, and suffering trace back to "Ignorance" (Avidya). Blind impulses trap us in a state of delusion. A stubborn attachment to the self, coupled with relentless desires, continuously breeds defilements and negative karma, causing us to lose our rationality.
Look around us: most of the salvageable items thrown into landfills are the products of humanity's blind consumerism and our lack of courage to say no to desire. Similarly, industrial meat production depletes precious natural resources, causes massive pollution, and disrupts ecological balance. This not only inflicts immense suffering on sentient beings but also indirectly triggers widespread famine and hardship—all because we blindly chase fleeting sensory pleasures. Shrouded by ignorance, humanity is gradually falling into a spiritual decline, dragging the physical environment down with it. To make the world a better place, we must begin from the heart, restoring clarity and purity to the human soul.
Yet, how do we restore this inner clarity? The Buddha declared, "All sentient beings possess Buddha-nature." By nature, we are inherently filled with compassion and wisdom. This is why Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Chan Buddhism, marveled, "How wondrous! The self-nature is originally pure!" When our inner minds are clear and we perceive the ultimate truth of the universe, we naturally co-create a pristine, undefiled environment. Conversely, if our minds are polluted and blinded by ignorance, we will only build a world of turbidity and vexation. As the saying goes, "As the mind is purified, the land is purified." This underscores the profound urgency of "Spiritual Environmentalism."
"When the water of the mind is clear, the reflection of compassion appears." To live a life of joy and light, we must actively cultivate a "Mind of Great Compassion" (Mahākaruṇā)—a selfless, egalitarian mindset rooted in unconditional kindness and universal empathy. It is a vow to bring joy to others and guide them away from suffering. This is epitomized by the supreme resolve of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva: "Not until the hells are emptied will I become a Buddha; only when all sentient beings are saved will I attain Bodhi."
In our daily lives, we can put these ideals into practice by actively supporting green initiatives. Simple acts like reducing plastic bag usage and using paper wisely allow us to practice compassion by cherishing all things. This not only cuts personal expenses but directly mitigates environmental pollution.
True economic prosperity should match and elevate human culture, morality, civic duty, and compassion. Life is impermanent. May sentient beings cherish the present moment, purify their minds, and cultivate a compassionate heart. When we learn to love others, love ourselves, and cherish all living things, environmental destruction will cease. If everyone contributes their part to healing the earth, we can establish a Pure Land on Earth and inaugurate a brilliant new era.

[Verse 1]
Step into the 21st century,
Humanity stands face-to-face with severe threats.
The slaughter of wildlife, the rampant deforestation,
When traced back to its root,
It stems entirely from the excess of human desire.
[Chorus]
The sacred verse declares, oh hear it now:
"When the minds of sentient beings are purified,
The reflection of ultimate compassion manifests within!"
To live a life of radiant clarity,
We must diligently nurture a "Heart of Compassion."
An completely selfless state,
That delivers the world from suffering!
[Verse 2]
The Buddha taught: "All phenomena are created by the mind."
The bitter anxieties of this world,
Are born directly from the defilements within our own hearts.
All grief, sorrow, & bitter karmic fruits,
Are triggered by Ignorance & a stubborn attachment to the self.
Humanity gradually falls, the world is degraded,
But we can choose to turn it around!
[Bridge]
How unexpected! The self-nature is originally pure!
"As the mind is purified, the land is purified."
This is the ultimate protocol of Spiritual Protection!
[Outro]
Purify your mind. Cherish the present moment.
We shall build a pure land here in the human realm,
Opening a glorious new era.
The ledger is balanced, the fortress is sealed.
