Portfolio of World Urban Forum 2024

The World Urban Forum (WUF) is a premier global conference on urban issues, established by the United Nations in 2001. The 12th session, WUF12, set to take place in Cairo, Egypt in 2024, epitomizes a global event due to its universal relevance and the diverse international participation it attracts. The event serves as a platform for stakeholders from government, academia, civil society, and the private sector to discuss sustainable urbanization, making it a microcosm of international discourse on urban development (UN-Habitat, 2023). WUF12’s designation as a global event is academically justified by its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11, which aims to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable (United Nations, 2015).

One aspect of WUF12’s operations that underscores its status as a global event is its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. However, there is room for improvement in the event’s operational sustainability. Despite strides in inclusivity, the carbon footprint associated with large-scale international gatherings remains a pressing issue. According to Gössling et al. (2019), international conferences can substantially contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, primarily through air travel. WUF12 can enhance its sustainability by adopting more rigorous carbon offsetting measures and promoting sustainable travel alternatives for participants. Additionally, the event could implement more robust digital platforms to further reduce the need for physical attendance, thereby minimizing environmental impact. WUF12 in Cairo is a quintessential global event, drawing on a rich tradition of international collaboration to address pressing urban challenges. Its inclusive operational model sets a benchmark for global event leadership, though further enhancements in sustainability practices are necessary to fully align with the ethos of responsible global citizenship. By continuing to evolve in these areas, WUF12 can not only lead in urban discourse but also in setting exemplary standards for global event management.
