March 6th - Gordon Young, volunteer tour-guide at the Clifton Suspension Bridge and Chairman of the Commemorative Blue Plaques Panel of the Bristol Civic Society, talk about Clifton Suspension Bridge.
The talk at Cotswold Edge Golf Club was enjoyed by a smaller than usual audience, possibly because of the recent poor weather. Nevertheless we still raised just under £500 for the RNLI.
The illustrated talk about this iconic world symbol of Bristol covered the early history, troubled financial matters resulting in construction being abandoned, eventual completion and celebratory opening, plus, lively little-known anecdotes of its subsequent history and some of the little known design features which may be missed by passing visitors.
Gordon demonstrated, with the aid of 'props' and with audience participation, how the chains support the bridge.
Not only was the talk entertaining and informative it also had many amusing anecdotes.
We thank Gordon for giving the talk on what was another particularly cold evening and also Cotswold Edge Golf Club for allowing us to use their room.
