Dr. Justen V. Seay is in his first year as the Director of Choral and Vocal Activities at Wilberforce University. He expresses his gratitude for the warm welcome he has received from the community. Through his initial interactions with faculty, students, and administration, he has discovered that Wilberforce University is a distinctive and remarkable institution.
With over 35 years of singing and performing experience, along with 15 years in Choral Music Education and Educational Leadership, Dr. Seay brings a wealth of knowledge to his role. He is an alumnus of Central State University, where he had the privilege of performing globally as a member of the internationally acclaimed Central State University Chorus, directed by Professor William Henry Caldwell. Inspired by these experiences, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, a Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership and Curriculum and Instruction, and a Doctor of Education degree. As an educator, Dr. Seay aims to provide his students with hope and encourage them to reach their full potential.
He has previously worked as a general and vocal music teacher in Dayton Public Schools, where he led the award-winning Fairview PK-8 Choir and the Dunbar Early College High School Concert Choir. Additionally, he served as the Academic Coordinator for Fine and Performing Arts in Dayton Public Schools. Most recently, he held the position of principal at Central Point Preparatory Academy in Columbus, OH, and Richard Allen Preparatory in Dayton, OH. Dr. Seay is excited to join the faculty at Wilberforce University to continue his dedicated work in music education.
Dr. Seay's primary objective at Wilberforce University will be to revitalize a choral program with a rich history of excellence led by notable conductors such as Dr. James Arthur Williams and Professor Jeremy Winston. He has received a mission from the esteemed president, Dr. Vann Newkirk, to restore the sound of the Wilberforce University Choral Program and to actively engage the campus community, including its distinguished alumni, to ensure that Wilberforce University continues to thrive and evolve into the exceptional institution that it has the potential to be.
