Dovetail is a full service, woman-owned Cultural Resource Management firm headquartered in Fredericksburg, Virginia with a second office in Wilmington, Delaware. Dovetail was founded in 2005 by its principals, Kerri Barile and Mike Carmody, who have decades of experience working with cultural resources across the United States. The company has grown to nearly 50 staff members, including archaeologists, architectural historians, historians, historic preservation planners, Graphic Information System (GIS) and Computer Aided Design (CAD) specialists, and administrative professionals. Dovetail is certified as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina.

Since opening its doors, Dovetail has completed almost 1,000 projects across all client sectors, including transportation-related projects, utility projects, municipal improvements, governmental projects (DOD, COE, NPS), and private developments. The firm’s depth of staff, multiple offices, and expertise allows them to provide a full range of cultural resource services. Over the past 10 years alone, they have recorded over 8,000 above-ground resources and over 1,000 archaeological sites; their coordination services cover a dozen State Historic Preservation Offices and scores of other federal, state, and local agencies.

Dovetail’s personnel pride themselves on their ability to apply cultural resource expertise and knowledge of the local, state, and national regulations, with an understanding of the project development process, permitting, and approvals. The firm understands that its task as a consultant is to assist clients in achieving their project goals, while ensuring that cultural resources are evaluated and considered appropriately during that process. Dovetail’s extensive background, depth of talented staff, and excellent relationships with agency personnel allows them to partner with clients to achieve outstanding project results, on time and on budget.

Some of the specific assets the Dovetail brings to projects include: in-depth and hands-on knowledge of east coast prehistory and history, a thorough understanding of all aspects of cultural resource investigations, an in-depth understanding of federal and state preservation legislation including both Section 106 and Section 4(f), and knowledge of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) process. However, most importantly, the Dovetail team brings a holistic view of the cultural resource consultation process and extensive experience working with cultural resources. From initial project meetings through final project coordination, Dovetail assures the highest quality of work and agency relations.
