World Space Week Raleigh

Adam Dipert discusses Dancing in Zero G

Access to space and weightless environments is closer and more accessible everyday. What possibilities lay ahead in a future where humans can experience a new relationship to our bodies without gravity? Dance, beyond our wildest dreams.

What is World Space Week (WSW)? [1]

World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events:

  • October 4, 1957: Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration
  • October 10, 1967: The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activites of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.

What is happening in Raleigh NC for WSW?

Adam Dipert will be giving a short talk about his research and experience on the topic of movement and dancing in weightlessness.

He has invested much time over the last few years studying this topic. Specifically, he has written computer programs to simulate aspects of the human body in weightlessness, gone on the zero gravity flight in the US, and explored the history of weightless movement artists.

For the past few years, he has been developing tools and knowledge to make the jump into artistic weightlessness movement more comprehensible for himself and others. At the Google Fiber Cafe in Raleigh and in celebration of World Space Week, he will be offering a description of his work on the topic of human body movement in zero gravity. The talk will be roughly 30-45 min with video and demonstrations. He will discuss:

1) who has been doing weightless art and dance already

2) why is this interesting

3) a computer program he has written to help develop an intuitive understanding of the dynamics

4) his experience on the zero gravity flight

5) what should a person know to become a competent zero gravity movement artist
