Pilot Study
Before we wanted to create this anti-crime app, we conducted a survey of nearby residents knowing nothing about the situation in our own community. Therefore, we want to make an APP to help residents or foreigners understand the past crime situation in the community.
Pilot Study Result
More than 90% of the people and professors think that our APP can effectively solve community problems. As for the fluency of our reports, nearly 95% of the people or professors think it is fluent.
For our poster (at the bottom of the home page), nearly 80% of the people or professors think it is attractive.
However, a small number of professors believe that the direct release of data may impact local tourism and the economy. In this regard, we will integrate tourism information into our APP, and introduce local tourist attractions by the way, hoping to solve this problem.
Most of the professors believe that this App is feasible, and hope that this concept can be integrated into the home buying website, so that the public can have one more indicator to decide where to invest.
Survey Results
We used APP Inventor to make the first version of the APP. At the beginning of entering the APP, you can see the weather information about the area and select your language.
After the selection is completed, you can enter the second screen. After selecting the area you are in, you can see all the crime data about the area, and according to the crime data, you can make appropriate prevention.
For example, if the data of drugs and theft are too high in that area, you should pay attention to these two things if you happen to live in the community or come to the area to work, look for a house to buy, or travel.
Benefit of the Anti-crime App
For residents, with this APP, they can learn more about the crime problems currently facing in their communities. It can help people stay much safer at night whether they are jogging or going out to buy midnight snacks...etc.
For the people who come here to travel or play, with this app, they can learn more about this area and take appropriate precautions.
For builders and people who come here to buy houses, community safety can be a consideration. Although there are precedents for integrating community safety into the website in the United States, it seems that no builder in Taiwan has integrated community safety into the website. This is an important indicator integrated into the real estate website.
Open Data Source
DATA.xlsxFor Taiwan, crime data is only released every few years, so we used the statistics of various crimes in Kaohsiung City in 2018 to make our first draft. In the future, we will cooperate with the police agency to try to put the data into the database, and make it have daily update functions.
It is hoped that the most accurate data can be brought to the people in their need.
Problem We Faced
We encountered some problems while making this APP:
1. The search for data made us search the entire Google, but we could not find the latest data. After asking relevant agencies, we found out that the data would not be released until several years later. Finally, we decided to make the first draft based on the crime data of Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. After waiting for completion, we will publicize this concept to various countries.
2. We are not familiar with the use of APP Inventor, and we successfully completed this APP after learning from a computer teacher step by step.
3. The job allocation and cooperation in the group is very important. If one person’s work is not completed, the whole plan will be ruined. If one person does not complete the work at one time, all team members cannot continue our plan after waiting for him to complete. This makes us learn about the importance of teamwork.
4. The lack of English ability is the biggest difficulty we have encountered. In Taiwan, our common language is Mandarin Chinese. It really troubles us to use English to communicate while conceiving. Fortunately, there are teachers beside us to help teach, translate, and wait for us.
At the beginning of this course, we completed all the tasks. According to the theme of this time: unifying community, we made this APP to unify us and together we create a safer and more secure community. Although the process was difficult, we not only completed the first draft but also improved our inquiry and make progress of our English ability to communicate with others.
