Pop-Up Mentoring Program

We are happy to announce that WSCLA 25 attendees may participate in PUMP (Pop-Up Mentoring Program), an initiative through the LSA's Committee on Gender Equity in Linguistics (COGEL - formerly COSWL).

PUMP provides one-off mentoring meetings at linguistics conferences around the world. The organizers match one or more mentees with mentors who can provide quick but personalized career advice to linguists at any stage, in any location, and in any career. The event is open to all, regardless of gender or career stage; the purpose of the mentoring sessions is to help more junior colleagues with a variety of potential problems and questions that arise in a professional context, such as work/life balance, minority status, and graduate or job applications.

A few other details

  1. This is a one-time session (i.e., the mentor is not signing on for a longer-term mentoring relationship);

  2. The mentee should come with a specific question or two to guide the session and make the most of it;

  3. The mentee should send the mentor some information about themselves and their question(s) ahead of time, but not expect that the mentor will have read this information prior to the meeting.

  4. Since WSCLA 25 is a virtual event, we will not schedule a specific time and place for mentors and mentees to meet, and will instead leave it to individual mentor-mentee pairs to coordinate the meeting time.
