Private Writing Lessons
About me
Hello! I'm Nishay, a recent graduate of UC Santa Barbara. I have a B.S. in Psychological and Brain Sciences and a minor in History. I have taught writing lessons for students ages 10-17 for three years and currently have openings for the fall of 2024!

Here's a bit more about myself and why I love to teach.
Before college, I was homeschooled, and I didn't attend a formal class until I was 14. During my high school years, I took small, homeschool classes and enrolled in courses at city colleges in the San Francisco Bay Area. My educational journey has been unconventional, and I am immensely happy with how it turned out. My strong writing skills were essential in navigating this path, and I owe much of it to one of my first teachers. He taught a weekly writing class with just 2-4 students, using our interests and passions to teach us how to write in various contexts. Inspired by his approach and its impact on me, I started teaching online writing lessons in 2020. Teaching these lessons allows me to share my passion for writing in a fun and fulfilling way, helping students develop their own unique voices and skills.
I enjoy playing ice hockey, traveling, memorizing, playing music, reading, and learning about everything, particularly psychology.
Why I Teach
Whether it be piano, ice hockey, the MCAT, Organic Chemistry, or English, I have always loved teaching people what I know and the feeling of fulfillment that comes with it. I feel like it’s a waste to learn things and not help others do the same. I majored in psychology in college and fell in love with the science of learning and teaching. With proper study and memory techniques, learning becomes far easier and more enjoyable. So, while I love to pass on the knowledge that I have, I also love to share the best ways to take in that knowledge.
Experience
I have taught virtual writing lessons for over three years and have had experience teaching students from elementary to high school. I was trained as a tutor at UCSB and worked as an Organic Chemistry tutor for two years. I also tutor the Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills section of the MCAT. I have tutored SAT English, piano, and math. I have also coached at various youth ice hockey camps, and am was the assistant coach of the UCSB Ice Hockey team. I have been a ghostwriter for the blog of an infectious disease consultant (rinamarfatia.com). I also once tried to teach my 9-month-old cousin piano, and now she can hit 5 keys at once, so I consider that a success.
