You looked back at me
You looked back at me
But I didn’t look in your eyes,
Oh no
I was working on a song,
A song with a pretty tune
But then I was swept away
And I didn’t really fight it
My heart never caught its way up
It was always a step behind.
I was trailing when you turned and looked
So all you saw was my hesitation…
Orpheus, I loved it when we held hands
Orpheus, I loved it when your eyes looked grey-green
Orpheus, I worked on poems and got waltzed away,
One, two-three; one, two-three...
By the wind and the beauty of things most can’t have enjoyed
With such bright love in their life.
Orpheus, I got distracted;
Orpheus, I missed the chance
To say I love you back.
I never found it, Orpheus…
So when you turned to look at me,
You saw my hesitation in bright sunlight.
I see your half-mast eyes out of the corner of my own
I remember the flowers you picked while I worked on my song.
I notice I had pulled away too far for you to reach me
I realise I could have kissed you unprompted, but I never did.
Orpheus, I learnt we needed different things
Orpheus, my song still isn’t finished
Orpheus, the words written for you were sweet and heartfelt
Though in hindsight, they're unpolished; halfway toward the right idea
Always missing something; something I don’t quite have yet.
Orpheus, you will find who you need.
Orpheus, I wish you the best.
Orpheus, this verse is sad
But the song will have a happy ending.
It will have a happy ending.
