WHO WE ARE
Alumni. Alumnae. Family & friends from W&M. Olde guard & recent grads. We represent a spectrum of majors & degrees. Generally reading one of the two books we’ve selected, but not always. Some of us are “regulars” who attend monthly & some of us are drop-ins who join for an intriguing title. Some of us stop in just to hear the “book talk” and end up reading the title later. Or not. What matters most is that we gather to learn the way we used to when we walked the bricks on campus.

We gather in person every month (except July and Aug) on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm at Kilroy's (5250a Port Royal Road, Springfield VA; owned by Pip Thomas, W&M Class of '69) to eat, drink, analyze the books we've read, and discuss all things W&M!
(No virtual option at this time - sorry!)

This 1899 masterpiece by Polish-British novelist Joseph Conrad tells the story of a voyage up the Congo River into the Heart of Africa.
The story is narrated by Charles Marlow, recalling his obsessive quest to locate the ivory trader Kurtz, who has become ensconced deep in the jungle managing a remote outpost. As he ventures further and further down the Congo, Marlow finds himself and his surroundings become increasingly untethered.

In the late nineteenth century, as the European powers were carving up Africa, King Leopold II of Belgium carried out a brutal plundering of the territory surrounding the Congo River. In a horrifying episode of colonial exploitation, he ultimately slashed the area’s population by ten million yet still managed to shrewdly cultivate his reputation as a great humanitarian.
